Im due ds2 at the end on april, and me and dp cant decide on a name. I like the older names like Jack, but everyones called that, and Jake, Oliver, Josh, and have a son (3yrs) called Alex. But dp isnt his dad, so had no say in his name.
Dp likes 'wierd' names like Sole (no, its a baby, not a fish dp!), and Chester (dog), and the only name we can remotely agree on is Dylan, but family members have commented that maybe its a bit 'common', and in chavish (please dont shout at me for using that word, I cant think of another that would explain what I mean).
So, is it?

Bruce is not a weird name in Scotland

maybe Lazy Town will make Sportecus (sp?) more popular

Flubdub · 18/03/2008 20:44

I dont know any other Dylans, thank God. Its not a definate, dp is obsessed with wierder names, but I think that seeing as Iv done most of the work bringing this baby into the world, I get the final say. Sole, it will not be!

i like Jude for a boy.

Nappyzone · 18/03/2008 20:48

I also like jack and know at least 3 people who have avoided it due to it being popular so mayeb it wont be that popular after all

vicky11 · 18/03/2008 20:51

dildo?? sorry!!!

FourPlusOne · 18/03/2008 20:51

I know 2 babies, a toddler and man called Dylan. I am in Wales though! . None of them have chavvy parents! Don't like Sole though .

dragonbutter · 18/03/2008 20:53

I have a Sol. and he is lovely. His grandad pronounces is Sole but that's because he is a mentalist and to be ignored.

Flubdub · 18/03/2008 20:57

dildo?

I don't think Dylan is chavvy but IME it's a naughty boy's name.

Every Dylan I've ever taught has been quite a handful. Though I have to add, they've all been quite endearing too!

MadameCh0let · 18/03/2008 22:25

Well, I just thought Dylan Thomas, Welsh, but apparently in America they've only heard of it because of 90210.

MadameCh0let · 18/03/2008 22:26

I think Bruce is really cool. You could do the nn Bruno for a few years, til the o thing dies, and then Bruce would be a bit more 'acceptable' to the masses by then.

UncleBulgaria · 18/03/2008 22:38

corinthian

Squirdle · 18/03/2008 23:04

Ah cushioncover, you could be on to something ther My Dylan is exactly that. A bit of a pickle, into everything he shouldn't be, but very cute. H looks like an absolute angel with his very blonde longish hair and huge blue eyes, but he isn't an angel He is however very well behaved at nursery.

So I can blame DH for all of the things Dylan gets up to then. Dylan was the only one we could agree on as DH wouldn't have my other name choices!

LittleWonder · 18/03/2008 23:14

Friend's son is called dylan and people call him dill - which is horrible.

LittleWonder · 18/03/2008 23:14

quite like Dylan. Makes me think of Bob. It's my cousin-in-law's name - he's about 10 - and when they named him I thought it was going to be ubiquitous (their choice of girl's name is) but in fact not so, well not round here anyway.

In fact a Dylan would be the only one at our school. Lots of Olivers tho (3 in DS2's year alone).

Sole is bizarre but Chester is trendy, someone famous has gone for that haven't they? . ah yes davina M

I think an unusual name can work well with a common surname, and vice versa. A pal has a very unusual Italian name so her DCs are Lucy and Edward.

Go for Jack if you like it so much. There aren't that many about - only one for eg among my DCs' circles, unlike James or Matthew (DS1 seems to know about 5)

tripletsandtwins · 19/03/2008 02:45

I don't think it's chavvy, I quite like it actually

Dylan and Alex.... Alex and Dylan... they go well together

Buda · 19/03/2008 07:33

Jack is nice - and I think it is seen as being v. popular but as others have said is on the way out maybe so although there may be 3 or 4 in certain classes now there may not be in 4 years.

Dylan I think seems to be getting more popular. I like it.

DS is Matthew - haven't met another one his age yet. He has 2 Toms and 2 Lewis in his class.

Pedant question - plural of Lewis? Lewiss/Lewis's/Lewisii????

pinkyp · 19/03/2008 07:45

Hi if u like jack call him that, i really like dylan but for some reason everyones started naming their kids dylan! I dont think you'll find a good "origional" name theres loads of "origional" names out there now. Maybe make a short list and see when he is born what suits him better x

MadameCh0let · 19/03/2008 08:38

What about Johnny? There's a Jack and a Johnny in my dd's class and the Johnny is the one that makes me think, oh, that's a bit interesting. Yeah I know. John interesting. But when you are meeting millions of kids, and no adults, John is the one that surprises you.

TheDevilEatsNestle · 19/03/2008 08:41

I wouldn't christen a child Johnny. It would be ridiculous as an adult.

itsahardknocklife · 19/03/2008 08:45

I like Dylan - DS has two little friends called Dylan. Not sure if it's a 'man's' name though, if you see what I mean.

Jack is nice and Josh is popular now. I like Oliver too. I didn't use to because I once taught a particular spoilt child called Oliver, but I am slowly getting over it! I even suggested the name Olive if we had a daughter. We hada son though, much to DH's relief!

MrsMattie · 19/03/2008 08:45

I think Dylan is common (as in popular) - I don't know if that makes it chavvish, though?
