Im due ds2 at the end on april, and me and dp cant decide on a name. I like the older names like Jack, but everyones called that, and Jake, Oliver, Josh, and have a son (3yrs) called Alex. But dp isnt his dad, so had no say in his name.
Dp likes 'wierd' names like Sole (no, its a baby, not a fish dp!), and Chester (dog), and the only name we can remotely agree on is Dylan, but family members have commented that maybe its a bit 'common', and in chavish (please dont shout at me for using that word, I cant think of another that would explain what I mean).
So, is it?

I cannot believe that Emma is considered a chavvy name.

I think it is pretty.

Quadrophenia · 19/03/2008 18:55

I have a ds called Dylan, not remotely offended by this thread, he is lovely. I will put a pic in my profile just to prove it

Flubdub · 19/03/2008 18:56

princessmel - mine is too

Emma isnt a chavvy name, and its crazy that people think it is.

Oh, and at the lime green bikini top, and skin tight skirt on that link!

Chavish!?! How very dare you! Its a good welsh name, and here in Wales not considered chavish in the slightest. In fact bordering on posh! Normally pronounced Dillan in urban areas but Dullan in rural (i.e. welsher (?) areas), I like it

lottiejenkins · 19/03/2008 18:58

How about Theo?

peacelily · 19/03/2008 19:08

Cannot believe Emma (my name!) is considered chavvy!!! hey I know it was a popular choice for girls in the 70s (4 in my year alone) but didn't realise popular meant chav!

Same for Sophie, Nicola and Melissa, these are well, really nice names.

Daily Mail article is horrible but then what can you expect from such bigoted rubbish that has the audacity to call itself "news".

Interesting that alot of the names are Irish, it would appear that the Irish are still a stigmatised group in our society where racism directed at them is thinly disguised in the form of "jokes" or other types of mockery.

peacelily · 19/03/2008 19:10

Dylan is lovely byt eh way, it was one of our choices if we had had a boy. My (v snobby) mother turned her nose up at it which made me even more determined to use it but we had dd and chose Maia. Love it.

Quadrophenia · 19/03/2008 19:15

the lovely Dylan now on my profile

Kindersurpise · 19/03/2008 19:48

Lovely pics, Quadrophenia.

Love the Bully, we are selling our Bug soon

Quadrophenia · 19/03/2008 20:01

Oh noooooooooooooooooo, thats the second time someone has told me they're selling their bug today. What have you got?

Kindersurpise · 19/03/2008 20:45

A 1967 standard.

We love it but it is just not suitable with 2 young DCs. It just sits in the garage looking forlorn.

He is called Hamish.

LLD · 19/03/2008 20:49

Does anyone remember Jeloquondade-Patate? That was my all time fave.

Quadrophenia · 19/03/2008 20:50

wow I love standard vw's, there is a shoiw coming up in Suffolk which is for standard only, Lavenham I think it is. Where all the vw's are going to park in the square, its going to be like a museum.

Children and bugs are a tricky mix, I'd love a bug but the van is much more practical. Do you ever go to the shows?

Kindersurpise · 19/03/2008 21:19

LLD
Please tell me you looked up Jelo... whatever and haven't memorised it. That was a great thread.

We are in the VW homeland, we have been to a few shows in Germany/Holland over the years. Did not know that there are standard shows. Never heard of that here.

Flubdub · 19/03/2008 21:25

My ds has got a giant vw van sticker on his wall, it looks great. We want to get one just for the kids (and me) to mess about in.

Quadrophenia · 19/03/2008 21:54

Is Bad camberg not a standard show? Its not that modified vans etc can't go its just they can't park in selected areas.
We may have to sell our van too for financial reasons it has brought us so much pleasure and it is our cheap holidays etc but i know we are ghoing to have to weigh it all up fairly soon.

Quadrophenia · 19/03/2008 21:55

Flubdub, i would definately recommend one. Ours is tax excempt and cheap to insure and we have met loads of wonderful people through the scene.

barbamama · 19/03/2008 22:03

Can't believe that people are now saying Dylan is chavvy! Surely not.

Washersaurus · 19/03/2008 22:07

No-one is saying Dylan is chavvy! (or did I miss it?)

Oh I don't care what anyone thinks of it, we love DS1's name and it suits him.

barbamama · 19/03/2008 22:10

yes you did that is exactly what the OP was asking!! Most people are as outraged as me at the suggestion though. I also can't believe they are equating it with being as common as Jack! I know about 47 Jacks and 2 Dylans.

What is it with the Dylan threads at the moment. 3 years, I knew it would hurt, sob!

barbamama · 19/03/2008 22:12

and how can teachers think it is a naughty boys name! OUTRAGE OUTRAGE OUTRAGE. I knew this day would come but, frankly, I am not handling it well.

Just been upstairs to kiss my own angel Dylan and reassure him that he is not and never will be a chav.

KK if you are reading this, DON@T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!

Kindersurpise · 19/03/2008 22:19

Um, the OP likes the name Dylan, it is her family who have said that the name is "common".

She was asking the MN jury if they were right.

barbamama · 19/03/2008 22:20

I know - her family are suggesting it is chavvy - that is what I said

Pen74 · 19/03/2008 22:47

Dylan is not chavvy! It is a classy name. I know quite a few Dylans and would say 98% of them come from very classy families. A friend's just had a Dylan and her older two are Sebastian and Sophia.

Do not worry.. it's never going to be a Tyler/Bailey/Jayden. It's a legitimate name with lots of history, and charm!

JetPeanut · 19/03/2008 22:52

I love Dylan. Not at all chavish.
