Im due ds2 at the end on april, and me and dp cant decide on a name. I like the older names like Jack, but everyones called that, and Jake, Oliver, Josh, and have a son (3yrs) called Alex. But dp isnt his dad, so had no say in his name.
Dp likes 'wierd' names like Sole (no, its a baby, not a fish dp!), and Chester (dog), and the only name we can remotely agree on is Dylan, but family members have commented that maybe its a bit 'common', and in chavish (please dont shout at me for using that word, I cant think of another that would explain what I mean).
So, is it?

I like Dylan, but have heard it being referred to as chav before. I would let this bother you. It's one of those names that is used by all classes.

I love Finn, but Flynn? Just no!

Squirdle · 18/03/2008 19:58

Dylan is not chavvy!!

DS3 is Dylan and he is wonderful. I don't know any other Dylans btw.

And DS1 is Alex

Pen74 · 18/03/2008 20:02

Sorry, that hould have read 'I wouldN'T let it bother you'

Flubdub · 18/03/2008 20:03

Now he wants Marley

sigh

sole and chester awful, but like dylan

Squirdle · 18/03/2008 20:05

TMMB - there are many more Jacks around than Dylans! DS2 has 4 Jacks in his class.

I thought Chavvy names were meant to be ones like Tia-Maria or Armarni or whatever (struggling to think of any tbh)

Beenleigh · 18/03/2008 20:05

I men I like Dylan, it's nice

Squirdle · 18/03/2008 20:07

I know a Chester (at nursery with DS3) I don't really like it that much, tis too much like a surname. And I would like Marley if one of my awful relatives hadn't named her youngest it (she is chavvy - I'm not!)

llareggub · 18/03/2008 20:08

There are lots of Dylans about but very few of them pronounce it correctly...

CatIsSleepy · 18/03/2008 20:08

I know 2 dylans, neither they nor their families are remotely chavvy
mainly makes me think of Bob
and the Magic Roundabout

Sole is an appalling name
Chester's not much better

Flubdub · 18/03/2008 20:09

How do they pronounce it?

OP posts:
Bluestocking · 18/03/2008 20:09

Why on earth does your DP think that "sole" is a name? It's a fish, it's the bottom of your foot, it's being all alone, but it sure isn't a name. I won't even start to go into how awful "Chester" is as a suggestion for your precious baby boy. Dylan is perfectly nice, but if you like Jack, I think you should hold out for that.

Bluestocking · 18/03/2008 20:09

Marley is waaaay chavvy.

Squirdle · 18/03/2008 20:09

But how on earth could you pronounce it incorrectly? Admittedly e do get some silly spellings eg Dylon/Dillon/Dillan etc etc

Flubdub · 18/03/2008 20:09

Hes chanting "Marley. Marley. Marley." now. Get me out of this house!

He just said someone on Hollyoaks was called Sole.
I said, are you sure it wasnt Saul?
He looked at me stupidly and walked out. He meant Saul, the bloody spoon!

i have made this suggestion beofre on these threads and i will make it again.

give him a matching teddy he can be in charge of naming.

you know i really want to be the mumsnet equivalent of the swiss government.
i will compile a list of approved names and instead of these threads you just check the list. if it ain't on it-you shouldn't be calling your child it.

Flubdub · 18/03/2008 20:17

Oh please do tmmb. It would save a lot of stress!

OP posts:
Bluestocking · 18/03/2008 20:17

MMB, I love your approach to naming and will back you to the hilt (with my swiss army knife, of course!).
OP, that's a result - Saul is a great name. I've only ever known one Saul - he was a dreamboat and really brainy too.

dinny · 18/03/2008 20:27

Davina McCall's little boy is a Chester

Bluestocking · 18/03/2008 20:28

Dinny, I think that proves the anti-Chester brigade's point.

Washersaurus · 18/03/2008 20:34

Gawd, I knew it would be Dylan when I clicked on the link

My DS1 is called Dylan, and I sometimes wonder if it sounds a bit common (usually as I'm screeching it in public), but we have a fancy surname so I think we get away with it

Washersaurus · 18/03/2008 20:35

Dylan was a Mythological Welsh god of the sea btw, he was killed by his uncle I think

Quattrocento · 18/03/2008 20:36

Dylan is not chavvish but I know lots of little Dylans so it might be too popular for you

Washersaurus · 18/03/2008 20:39

My DH also likes more unusual names.. his suggestions for DS2 included Brutus and Bruce.

A friend of mine recently named her DS Spartacus (middle name) as her OH insisted on it.
