Anyone like to be kind about my girls' names list????

So come July I may be needing one of these (will think about boys tomorrow), what does anyone think? I like old-fashionedy, feminine names, but obviously don't want Emily, Isabella, Sophie or any of the others (all lovely names of course, lovely lovely but a bit too common at the moment from the names listings you see). DP likes ones that end in -a.

Alice (I'm not mad about Alicia though)
Louisa
Iona
Thea
Julia

I've always liked Flavia but it's way too pretentious to use.

I like these but not IN LOVE with any.

I like Iona and Thea

Alishanty · 13/03/2008 08:27

I like old fashioned names. The ones I like from your list are Alice and Thea.

moopymoo · 13/03/2008 08:27

Think I like Alice best out of those. All nice trad names but none of them make me go oooh lovely iyswim. I am liking Nancy at the moment. But am not preg nor do i want to be just fantasising as I have 2 boys!

geordiemacminx · 13/03/2008 08:28

I like Iona best - what about Fiona?

NOT Flavia - it is a brand name of instant hot drinks that you get in offices. Sorry

Flier · 13/03/2008 08:28

i like thea, its old fashioned, feminine, yet also strong, imo.

berolina · 13/03/2008 08:28

Louisa is lovely and my favourite on your list. How about Arabella? Lucia? Rosa?

CantSleepWontSleep · 13/03/2008 08:28

I like Louisa best.
I suspect you might also like Philippa?

teakettle · 13/03/2008 08:28

Too many jokes with Iona (I was at school with one). I like all the others esp Louisa and Julia.

belgo · 13/03/2008 08:29

What about Eliza?

I like Alice, Lousia and Julia.

No19 · 13/03/2008 08:32

Oooh lots of response already! Thanks.

Flavia drinks - nevvererdovem but it's off the list now all right for that as well as for ponce factor!

Lucia - loo-see-a or loo-chee-a?

I also like Chiara - Italian - kee-ah-ra - but as we are in Ireland everyone would just call her Ciara which I'm not mad about.

I like Nancy too (just finished Letters Between Six Sisters) and I think there is one somewhere in DP's family actually.

berolina · 13/03/2008 08:34

if I was going to use Lucia (it is on our list for a Very Hypothetical Girl, but quite far down as our surname begins with a vowel so -a names don't really work so well) I would say loo-see-a.

belgo · 13/03/2008 08:34

i was going to suggest Nancy!

No19 · 13/03/2008 08:34

You mean jokes as in Iona Carr, Iona Nyland, etc??!! LOL won't work with DP's nutty surname but when you think of it with mine it's TERRIBLE!

OFF THE LIST FOR IONA.

Perhaps I'll replace it with Isla.

I love Eliza but we have Elizabeth in family.

Iona Nyland is nearly Bond girlian.

MrsBadger · 13/03/2008 08:37

Laura?
Sylvia?
Helena?

No19 · 13/03/2008 08:40

Laura yes, Helena (Helen-a / Hel-ee-na?) yes.

Sylvia I do like but makes me think of Garnie in Ballet Shoes! Did anyone see in the tv one at Christmas how she developed a love interest? There's no way that was in the book, I must have read it 15 times.

Ooo I love girls' names. They are so PRETTY. (Have only DS at mo.)

PuppyDogTails · 13/03/2008 08:41

I love Julia, should be more common than it is imho

diplodocus · 13/03/2008 08:41
