Anyone like to be kind about my girls' names list????

So come July I may be needing one of these (will think about boys tomorrow), what does anyone think? I like old-fashionedy, feminine names, but obviously don't want Emily, Isabella, Sophie or any of the others (all lovely names of course, lovely lovely but a bit too common at the moment from the names listings you see). DP likes ones that end in -a.

Alice (I'm not mad about Alicia though)
Louisa
Iona
Thea
Julia

I've always liked Flavia but it's way too pretentious to use.

I like these but not IN LOVE with any.

Constance I like (despite knowing a horror) and it's virtue too. Having googled others

Prudence
Patience
Verity

also nice, though again I know they will be blackballed.

My sister's daughter is Lucie Constance Beatrice, and my aunt (daughter of Mary Thrift) is Sarah Constance.

My sister hesitated quite a lot about using Constance as a first name... she didn't only because she was feeling rebellious and didn't want to give her daughter a first name beginning with a C (in her DH's family tradition has it that all girls begin with a C... ).

I like Julia and Thea. I like Dorothea shortened to Thea. We have an ea sound in our surname though so I have to admire from afar.

how about amity, felicity, grace, justice, modesta/modesty, mercy (sometimes as dimin. for mercedes), peace, purity, serenity, silence, temperance, truth, wisdom, tempest, pax (latin for peace)

There is an Iona is DD's class and my BF's DS has an Iona in his class. Miserable name in my very honest opinion.

Oooer suwoo I'm glad I knocked if off the list before you contributed or I'd be bawling my poor little preggers eyes out!

Lucia is the most beautiful name in the whole world - almost fainted clean away when I saw further down the thread someone spelled it 'Lucheea' , that is a travesty. Whatever you choose, don't choose that!

Pronounced Luseea is the Spanish way
Pronounced Lucheea is Italian.

Both are pretty I think.

No19 · 13/03/2008 20:54

Yes, and I also knew a Spanish Lucia pron. lu-thee-a. All ways are nice but is being saddled with a name which can be pronounced three different ways going to be a pain for her (if it is a her)? Will people just call her Lucy?

I have also just remembered Lucinda, which I was thinking about about a month ago.

yeah, the Spanish have an interesting see/thee way of saying it - I can't do it.

My DD is Lucia (see)

Very rarely people call her Lu'chee'a, but it doesn't bother us - easily corrected, and it's pretty with a ch anyway. Sometimes people say it Lucy-a (emphasis on LU rather than CI - see what I mean?) and that annoys me a bit. It's not as easily corrected, some people don't seem to hear the difference.

We call her Lucia, Luie or Lulu, so no, nobody calls her Lucy (yet! - she is almost 4)

No19 · 13/03/2008 21:07

So you already have one! Lucky duck.

I think poster who wrote Lucheea was only doing it to show which pron she would be using. It is sooo pretty, lucky your dd.

the spanish for alice is alit ta? how does that sound? not sure about the spelling

ska · 13/03/2008 21:17

i only put 'lucheea' to emphasise the way i meant it to be pronounced (so not luseea). I can speak italian (actually i cant but i see enough world cinema to be able ot say most of the names and had salvatore (toto) for my son but he didnt make it)
