So come July I may be needing one of these (will think about boys tomorrow), what does anyone think? I like old-fashionedy, feminine names, but obviously don't want Emily, Isabella, Sophie or any of the others (all lovely names of course, lovely lovely but a bit too common at the moment from the names listings you see). DP likes ones that end in -a.

Alice (I'm not mad about Alicia though)
Louisa
Iona
Thea
Julia

I've always liked Flavia but it's way too pretentious to use.

I like these but not IN LOVE with any.

How about Eloise, there's a variety of pet names that can be made from it and it's unusual enough to different without having to spell it constantly.

CountessDracula · 14/03/2008 13:24

oh so do I No19
I wonder if it is the same person

PrincessPeaHead · 14/03/2008 13:25

not alice, there are BILLIONS
Julia is lovely and not used enough
Serena? Sophia? I LOVE Virginia - SO cool. I wish people used it more.

In pictura est puella. Puella est Flavia. Flavia est puella Romana et in Italia habitat.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 14/03/2008 13:31

Another vote for Julia

I heart you PPH

CountessDracula · 14/03/2008 13:31

Julia always reminds me of sloaney thick chalet girls

CountessDracula · 14/03/2008 13:32

oh yes I like Virginia
not keen on Ginny though (Wade? blegah)

Tinker · 14/03/2008 13:37

Julia is a beautiful name, I think.

CD -lol

CountessDracula · 14/03/2008 13:43

sorry

It's just EVERY chalet girl I have ever met seems to be called Julia. And rocket scientists they are not

claireybee · 14/03/2008 14:01

I know a Lucia, and she says it Loo-sha

stleger · 14/03/2008 14:04

Misdee has a`Serena, doesn't she?

No19 · 14/03/2008 14:04

CountessDracula you adjust your opinion this instant! My mother is called Julia and not only has she never worked in a chalet but she reads without moving her lips.

Isla
Senna
Eoifa (not sure of sp, pronounced eefah)

CountessDracula · 14/03/2008 14:05

Senna is a laxative

eternalstudent · 14/03/2008 14:06

Ha! PPH, that is from Ecce is it not?

Fennel · 14/03/2008 14:06

I like Iona, it's dd2's middle name. I might have saved it for dd3 if I'd known we would have another girl.

eternalstudent · 14/03/2008 14:07

It is a laxative but I think it's also welsh. Either that or two sets of friends have been plucking their names out of pharmacists handbook

PrincessPeaHead · 14/03/2008 14:09

I can go on, all you Ecce Romana lovers...

Etiam in pictura, est Cornelia. Cornelia etiam est puella Romana et in Italia habitat. Flavia est puella parva. Cornelia est puella magna.

(I always felt sorry for big hulking Cornelia)

This is from memory folks - yes I am THAT SAD

No19 · 14/03/2008 14:11

Julia was wife of Claudius as in I, C?

Actually if Livia hadn't been such a scheming hag her name is rather nice, and less commonly heard than Olivia.

See PPH I have swottishly moved on to Roman history. Jog the memory there, now, it was Ecce Romani not Romana!

oooh you are quite right
I only did a year or two and then binned it. Once past the first page, it really wasn't my thing

No19 · 14/03/2008 14:15

Quite impressive to have retained that, then! I don't come across billions of Alices, I am sad to hear that, but we are mostly in Ireland so perhaps less common here.

There's a Livia (half-Dutch, half-French) in the parallel class to my daughter at school - a very pretty name. Her brother is a Reuben.

No19 · 14/03/2008 14:27

That's interesting that you like it too. I suppose you can't imbue a name with all your prejudices relating to one person's having used it, like Livia the hag. For e.g. I know someone whose first name is Napoleon - a name you would think inseparable from THE one. But he owns the name and is a fantastic, intelligent, kind, down to earth fellow.
