Anyone like to be kind about my girls' names list????

So come July I may be needing one of these (will think about boys tomorrow), what does anyone think? I like old-fashionedy, feminine names, but obviously don't want Emily, Isabella, Sophie or any of the others (all lovely names of course, lovely lovely but a bit too common at the moment from the names listings you see). DP likes ones that end in -a.

Alice (I'm not mad about Alicia though)
Louisa
Iona
Thea
Julia

I've always liked Flavia but it's way too pretentious to use.

I like these but not IN LOVE with any.

Here's another question do you let your existing dc in on the name decision or present them with a fait accompli on the day?

We told ds before dd arrived, and he seemed quite happy with this. I suppose it depends on the individual dc.
Btw, I suddenly thought of Stella - similar feel to Alice(?), classical but still sparkly and it ends in 'a'. Wish I'd thoght of it for dd.....

well.....my girls want to call current bump either darth vader, luke skywalker or princess leia.

and as my best friend has just called her new son luke, that doesn't leave us with much choice.

so although I value their suggestions, I may not be following their advice!!!

on the name front, although not ending in 'a', my girls names, Jennifer (jenny) and Heather haven't been mentioned, I still think they are fab. not common (only ones in their school/playgroup) but not outlandish, just old english names. bit stuck with this current one for names actually. nothing stands out! C xx

I feel I'm missing out now as I can't think of any little Alices at all. I do know loads of Isabels/Isabellas/Annabellas/Bellas/Ellas/Ellies though.

I wouldn't recommend letting your child have a say in the new sibling's name. Dd1 at nearly 4 cried bitterly because we wouldn't call dd3 exactly the same name she had.

Stella is fab!

Alice is lovely .

DH's granny's middle name is Alice and it suits DD very much as well .

stuffedolivia · 17/03/2008 21:21

Glad you like Stella - almost makes up for me not thinking of it for dd!

shoshe · 17/03/2008 21:40

What about

Moya
Lara
Carla
Sheena
Shona

ThinWhiteDuchess · 17/03/2008 21:49

Of those listed so far, I like Mia, Clara and (esp) India.

How about:

Ivy
Florence (don't end with 'a' but both are lovely, old fashioned names IMO)

Or

Abitheah (a v good friend of mine is called this and I think it is a lovely name, but likely to be shortened to 'Abi').

purpleduck · 17/03/2008 21:56

Shaina

I used to know some one called May-Ann

Loved it!

GColdtimer · 17/03/2008 22:04

my friend just called her dd Stella. Wasn't sure at first but now love it.

GreatGooglyMoogly · 18/03/2008 12:39

ooh Idris is your DD Alice?

IdrisTheDragon · 18/03/2008 13:25

DD is Alice

No19 · 18/03/2008 13:43

I like Alice because of its simplicity. I think a name like Xanthia, while pretty, would just be too much for us - though always hard to say until the baby actually shows its face.

Alice, Alicia, Anna, Antonia, Aoibheann.
Julia, Stella, Cleo.

What about Nancy, too, I can't decide if it's lovely or silly.

I am not normally this indecisive. It's also a problem because DP's taste and mine on this subject have proved to be practically incompatible!

Eustachia?

I've liked Alicia ever since reading the Malory Towers series. Antonia is nice, too.

pointedegg · 18/03/2008 22:42

bless you

seeker · 18/03/2008 22:52

Just go for Clemency and no one will get hurt..........

seeker · 18/03/2008 22:53

I love alicia too - but at our school it seems to be proounced Aleesha, which I think is horrid. Unless anyone's dd is called aleesha - in which case, it's lovely!

cherrylips · 19/03/2008 14:59

My favourite girls names are :

Louisa (v. favourite, lovely sounding name, and a great authoress)

Lucia (pronounced see)

Dorothea (shortened to Dora, Dolly, Thea)

Catriona (Scottish for Katherine, can be shortened to Cate or Kitty which are sweet i think)

Helena (Can be shortened to Nell, which I think is cute)

halogen · 06/04/2008 22:25

Clemency is absolutely gorgeous. If I have another daughter, I would really like to call her Clemency Violet.
