Anyone like to be kind about my girls' names list????

So come July I may be needing one of these (will think about boys tomorrow), what does anyone think? I like old-fashionedy, feminine names, but obviously don't want Emily, Isabella, Sophie or any of the others (all lovely names of course, lovely lovely but a bit too common at the moment from the names listings you see). DP likes ones that end in -a.

Alice (I'm not mad about Alicia though)
Louisa
Iona
Thea
Julia

I've always liked Flavia but it's way too pretentious to use.

I like these but not IN LOVE with any.

Had a classmate who's middle name was Iona - I think it's lovely!!! Never thought of "Iona Carr" though - hee hee! She was lucky not to have that thrown at her!
Other "nice ones I can think of are:
Alexandra Eloise
Katrina
Rebekah
Sarah
Annabel Rose
Lucinda
Belinda
Anita
Hope
Constance (Connie)
Claudia

ines is nice - and i love beatriz, the spanish beatrice

lucyellensmum · 13/03/2008 21:19

um, whats wrong with lucy

ska · 13/03/2008 21:21

nothing but she wanted a endings i think

pointydog · 13/03/2008 21:33

That's not fair. You can't start a names thread and ask people to be kind about it.

Well anyway, as luck would have it, I like:

Louisa
Julia
(Iona's ok)

pennytee · 13/03/2008 21:46

I love most girls names ending in 'a'
I've got an Anya Grace.

I have known some lovely Louisa's but DD has a Iona in her class and she is adorable.

ja9 · 13/03/2008 22:07

however, i always like a name when it is attached to a beautiful little baby

(well very nearly always)

No19 · 13/03/2008 22:27

Oh but I can, pointy, see how it has lured 'em in and I've got a load of brill suggestions out of it...

I like Beatrice but as we are in Ireland people will say Bee-triss in stead of Be-a-triss and I'll spend the rest of my time on earth grinding my teeth.

thank goodness ska! I thought it was some new trendy spelling! Aaaargh!

Lucy is a pretty name - sorry, didn't mean to suggest otherwise. Just that its a different name to Lucia - Like if you called you DD Emily and people called her Emma it would annoy you (even though they are both pretty names).

Thanks for the praise of DD's name No 19 We are really happy with it, it suits her really well too.

Astrophe · 13/03/2008 22:55

BTW, my friends DD is Ilona (Ily), which I like too. Other names I like: Ilya (Ily), Elia, Anna, Matilda/Tilly, Faith.

Phonicsangel · 13/03/2008 23:02

What about Lilia ??

nellyraggbagg · 13/03/2008 23:19

Alice is lovely - though there are quite a lot of them around. My friend has just had a Thea, so maybe that's becoming more popular? I used to want an Amelia, but I've come across a lot of them recently.

My DD is Henrietta (and both her middle names also end in 'a'!) If I had another DD (over my husband's dead body, he says), she'd be Augusta or Gertie - these names may be a reason why DH has said no more children, though!!

On my list for my DD were Portia (I thought it was from Shakespeare - I never watched Ally McBeal!!), Hortensia, Clarissa and Cordelia. DH vetoed them all (but I did know he would - which left him with Henrietta, my number one choice !!!)

I do still love Henrietta. What's more, the only other one I've met was 82!!

CristinaTheAstonishing · 13/03/2008 23:36

One of my cousins was called Fabiola, I always thought it was v pretty.

tripletsandtwins · 13/03/2008 23:54

I love Thea, I have a great friend called Thea though, so I suppose I'm bias! Chiara is also lovely, I would pronounce it kee-ah-ra, btw .

No19 · 14/03/2008 08:23

Hmm I like Henrietta and Cordelia (King Lear assoc. for me) though I don't like Delia. I have never heard of Fabiola.

I quite like the idea of literary associations but ran Flora past DP last night and he said no . Cold Comfort Farm is one of my absolute favourite books of all time so I would love to have a Flora (apart from it being such a pretty name). He's also now ruled out pretty much everything else I like and has come up wth NOTHING except Nancy (which doesn't even end in -a) and maybe Tessa which I think is quite nice but not oooooo yes. What is Tessa short for or is it a name on its own, does anyone know? He is also suggesting Madeleine (one of my own middle names). My printer was bockety so I wasn't able to print off the thread to staple to his forehead so I will do that later today.

I still love Alice and I still love Flora .

tessa = teresa tereesa) or theresa (teraysa) - think the latter would be french we had one at school and she wasnt popular so i dont like it (poor girl she was probably perfectly nice)

portia rossi (I think) was the actress in ally mcbeal who played the skinny long haired blonde one who ally didnt get on with. oh how i miss that programme...and obviously she was the 'quality of mercy' one from the merchant of venice.

No19 · 14/03/2008 08:41

Mmm I am not mad about Teresa.

Do you think Lyra would be going a bit far? Or would it absolutely date her forever?

OP posts:
ska · 14/03/2008 08:48

no lyra is lovely just dont take keira!

LauraT · 14/03/2008 11:11

The problem with Flora, which is a lovely name, is that kids will associate it with margarine, and teenagers with the fact that said margarine spreads easily... or at least they would in Glasgow

CountessDracula · 14/03/2008 11:17

I LOVE Louisa
but then I would (having one myself)

I think it is a pretty name without being wet or boring. IYKWIM. Lots of good pet names from it too

Anna8888 · 14/03/2008 11:18

LauraT - No Flora margarine here in France

Whispers

LauraT · 14/03/2008 11:27

you might not be, but child's classmates might!

No19 · 14/03/2008 13:15

That's what I'm looking for, Countess, strong yet feminine.

Oops I mean what WE are looking for.

Didn't realise margarine was a class-bound issue, wasn't there a whole U / non-U kerfuffle at some point about marJArine versus marGArine?

Come to think of it was Felix was bandied about for DS I vetoed it because of assoc. with cat food.

Am now glad I vetoed it but just because I think it's a bit wet, I've completely forgotten about the cat food.

I know someone called Ajax, but I think of Greek warriors rather than scouring powders.
