So come July I may be needing one of these (will think about boys tomorrow), what does anyone think? I like old-fashionedy, feminine names, but obviously don't want Emily, Isabella, Sophie or any of the others (all lovely names of course, lovely lovely but a bit too common at the moment from the names listings you see). DP likes ones that end in -a.

Alice (I'm not mad about Alicia though)
Louisa
Iona
Thea
Julia

I've always liked Flavia but it's way too pretentious to use.

I like these but not IN LOVE with any.

Alice and Alicia, Louisa, Luisa, Julia, all really pretty names imo.

claireybee · 13/03/2008 10:26

lol I'll tell her you liked her suggestion!

Vulgar · 13/03/2008 10:31

I knew a Venetia -she got teased about being blind all the time. shame, it's a pretty name.

What about Lara?

No19 · 13/03/2008 10:33

My Venetia got called Viennetta.

Lara is pretty but it's the dog's name in one of our favourite books with DS - Spy Dog. Brilliant book! Also Lara Croft - see I can't come to any name "clean".

I like Louisa best from your list, it's nice for both when they are little and when they get older.

claireybee · 13/03/2008 11:01

Hmm I'm the same with associations. DD is Caiela-derived from the Latin Caia (to rejoice). Was different enough for me not to have anyone associated with it but not different wierd!

bluenosesaint · 13/03/2008 13:15

I like Thea best out of your list

For names ending in 'a' how about:

Mia/Mya
Cara
Leah
Maria
Anna
Ella
Rebecca

NatalieJane · 13/03/2008 13:22

If I ever have a girl she will be called Maya, can also spell it Maia, haven't decided which to go for myself yet!

No19 · 13/03/2008 14:25

I do like Mia, and I like Rebecca too. I always have since Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm.

Maya is quite sweet, is that pron My-a rather than May-a?

No19 · 13/03/2008 14:25

Actually May is rather nice.

I like Alice

Laura is my current fave

Anna8888 · 13/03/2008 14:32

Alice and Louisa are both lovely, pretty names that I would consider for my DD no 2 (not yet conceived ).

My daughter is Flora and we are very happy with it. And I am Anna and have always loved my name

Sidge · 13/03/2008 14:33

Anna
Hannah
Natasha
Olivia
Clara
Amelia
Mia
Georgia
Bella

No19 · 13/03/2008 14:48

Flora is gorgeous, am I right in thinking it's a Scottish name?

I am currently liking

Alice
Julia
Isla
Flora
Clemency (Clem) - is there any other version of Clem names - other than Clementine?
Rosalind
Lydia

And have somewhat gone off Iona and Thea. And that's just in one morning - how shamefully fickle I am.

I also like old-fashioned virtue names e.g.

Faith
Hope
Charity

Would the poor girl be laughed at though?

Flora MacDonald and Bonne Prince Charlie...

I have a girlfriend whose maiden name was MacDonald. She called one of her DDs Flora...

I chose it because I love it and because it is one of the relatively few names that is as pretty in English as in French, and we needed a name that worked in both.

Anna8888 · 13/03/2008 14:53

Clementine is lovely too. Another one on my DD2 list .

I can't really have an Alice because we've got an Alexandre already...

Anna8888 · 13/03/2008 14:53

Virtue names are lovely too.

My paternal grandmother was Mary Thrift.

Honor?

Kindersurpise · 13/03/2008 14:57

My DD has a kindergarten teacher called Alisa. I think that is really pretty.

I like Julia, Isla and Honor.

No19 · 13/03/2008 14:58

Is Alex used as dimin. for dd Alexandre? If so an Alice could be confusing! Clementine will work equally in French if you are a bilingual family.

I have never heard of Thrift a a name, how unusual! Honor I am not sure about, but of FH and C my favourite is Faith. I can't see my partner plumping for it, though.

A French name I have always liked (though there is no way I could use it) is Hortense, which I think was the name of Napoleon's Josephine's dd.

Alexandre is a DS or rather my DSS. Yes, he gets called Alex most of the time. And I'm quite against siblings have the same initial (or similarly sounding names) - I think it's best to differentiate.

I think that the virtue names are great middle names.

LilRedWG · 13/03/2008 15:07

What about Eleanor Louisa? Or Alice Louisa?

No19 · 13/03/2008 15:08

Sorry Anna I thought it was feminine.

I never thought people would be so generous in their suggestions for someone else's baby name!

Come to think of it, Clemency is a virtue name too.
