Anyone like to be kind about my girls' names list????

So come July I may be needing one of these (will think about boys tomorrow), what does anyone think? I like old-fashionedy, feminine names, but obviously don't want Emily, Isabella, Sophie or any of the others (all lovely names of course, lovely lovely but a bit too common at the moment from the names listings you see). DP likes ones that end in -a.

Alice (I'm not mad about Alicia though)
Louisa
Iona
Thea
Julia

I've always liked Flavia but it's way too pretentious to use.

I like these but not IN LOVE with any.

stuffedolivia someone else mentioned Alice being quite common but I do not know a single one and it's probably because I'm in Ireland. Looking at UK lists of 100 most popular it had been in the 30s and 40s over last 5 years in Ireland it's been languishing round the 80s.

I've already been met with scorn on the Augusta front . Ella, Ava, Eva are all out because of friends & relations having nabbed. I haven't really been thinking of Irish names but I do like Aoibheann, pronounced Ay-veen.

Where does a name have to rank in the popularity lists to be out, is the question...

Ailsa
taught a lovely one a few years back

popsycal · 17/03/2008 19:04

If you are in Ireland, Aoife? Aine? Saiorshe (that is probably the wrog spelling....)

No19 · 17/03/2008 19:08

Well my shockingly low rent cultural references make me think of Alf Stewart saying Ailsa!

True, I can't think of any Irish Alices - (DH is Irish - so popularity not a problem. You won't believe it, but we have a niece called Aoibheann!! - Lovely name!

popsycal · 17/03/2008 19:11

lol No19 - hadnt thought of that - the lovely Ailsa was my only connection. Can't get it out of my mind now

HOw about Saiorshe though?
Must check spelling. Pronounced roughly say-sha. APologies to Irish folk - feel free to correct me!

Loraineinspain · 17/03/2008 19:11

I love Omicron its just so modern and funky yet old.

No19 · 17/03/2008 19:17

Saoirse's very nice, and it means freedom I think. Sear-sha is how I would say it.

Would he/she grow up to be Omega?

TheDullWitch · 17/03/2008 19:20

If I d had a girl I d have gone for Celeste.

I was reading a magazine when I was having my hair done and there was an article about Forest Whittaker. He called his sons Ocean and True and his daughter Sonnet. I don't like Ocean or True at all but thought Sonnet was really quite nice. Doesn't end in an "a" though! I could recommend you my name, old fashioned, feminine, ends in an a and I have never ever met another one nor probably will. But then everyone who has ever met me would know who I was, so I won't

other names for Tessa - Trelawney? Theodora?

No19 · 17/03/2008 19:33

Athene I don't even care if you're lying!

Athena would be beautiful but DP is way too NORMAL and SENSIBLE. When I suggested Hera he laughed so hard his collar stud popped off.

Sorry haven't read whole thread but what about

Viola
Sophia
Camilla
Ursula

Greensleeves · 17/03/2008 19:34

I like Cleo at the moment

No19 · 17/03/2008 19:35

Actually even I think Hera would be over the top.

I also like:

Minerva (Minnie)
Maoliosa (pron. Mal-ee-sa)
Iolanthe
Keziah
Tara
Isis
Io
Rowan
Leafe
Vivienne

and Rainbow

Greensleeves · 17/03/2008 19:43

Also like Trista - I had a friend called Trista when I was little, she had beautiful bouncy curls

No19 · 17/03/2008 19:44

I do like Rowan, Tara, love Cleo. You Greensleeves are clearly dead romantic, sorry to cast your names off miscourteously but Leafe or Iolanthe would be too offbeat for me!

or Rainbow

No19 · 17/03/2008 19:45

I thought Maoliosa was a boy's name!
