Thelma.

What do you think? It's definitely original these days. Not sure it's shaken off the cobwebs yet though!

I love Joseph for a boy and Josephine, for a girl but they've stood the test of time! Not that controversial

When will we re-embrace Kevin? Another name that's lovely on the sound of it. Maybe new mums will take to it.

I think Matthew is quite boring and old fashioned but it's not gone away.

I haven't even got over names like William coming back yet this latest wave needs damming.

LobotomisedIceSkatingFan · 06/07/2021 22:18

I pushed so hard for Gertie - Drew Barrymore in 'E.T.' is one of my favourite child roles ever. Didn't get anyone else on board, but I have an Augusta instead, which I'm chuffed about.

PieceOfString · 06/07/2021 22:21

Myrtle or Agnes are rare gems too. 😍

iklboo · 06/07/2021 22:26

I reckon Tracy must have started to get popular after Grace Kelly's character in High Society which would have been made in the late 50s. And then it would have climbed steadily for the next decade or so. I'm sure she made the name seem fresh and beautiful!

It was probably a lot of dads into Thunderbirds in the 60s 😂

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 06/07/2021 22:28

Horrible sound. It makes me think of phlegm.

BunnyRuddington · 06/07/2021 22:29

BertieBob · 06/07/2021 22:32

I teach one. She's 13

user1473450164 · 06/07/2021 22:34

I quite like it, probably because I loved the movie!

HoulYurWhisht · 06/07/2021 22:37

@StarryStarrySocks

I see your Thelma and I raise you Beryl. Doubt that will ever make a comeback either!
I love Thelma! And Beryl! (I work with old people and it only makes those names more special!) But Thelma is so sweet for a baby!

Coming back? Never out of the top 100 in centuries!
Rapskallion · 06/07/2021 22:54

I like Thelma.

I know of children called Thora, Ida, Mabel, Pearl, Esther, Ivy, …so I can absolutely see Thelma coming back.

I also think Vera is a great name. I wonder if the ‘een’ granny names will come back? Doreen, Maureen, Irene.

Baby Bev made me laugh, though Grin

Years ago I knew a youthful and very pretty Mavis. I daresay that now she's in her mid-fifties, it sounds a little less jarring. It still is, though. I think you had to be called Sarah, Jane, Linda or Rachel to get a school place when I was a child. Or Karen, of course. Not Mavis.
Anyone for Phyllis?

Sunbird24 · 06/07/2021 23:01

@DahliaMacNamara possible, but only because of the wonderful Nurse Phyllis Crane!

VVKills27 · 06/07/2021 23:37

Is Ethel cool again yet?

Keepitonthedownlow · 06/07/2021 23:42

Lily Allen's girls are called Marnie and Ethel, both have that 'old skool' vibe which is very sweet.

Luddite26 · 07/07/2021 05:01

William was definitely not used in the 70s the only ones we knew were old great uncles. First young William i met was born in 1986 and it was oh my God how could they.

DahliaMacNamara i knew a Mavis in 1989 she was 19 it stuck out so much.

My mum was Phyllis and her siblings called her Phyl which was cool.

Katefoster · 07/07/2021 07:17

I actually really like Thelma

pegboardsu · 07/07/2021 07:20

It was my grandma name, and my cousin has called his 2 year old after her.

I love it. Go for it!

Caspianberg · 07/07/2021 07:27

My grandmother was Phyllis and her sister Winifred.

Ds name has been mentioned on this thread.

If he has been a girl we had Alma and Rita on our list.
