Thelma.

What do you think? It's definitely original these days. Not sure it's shaken off the cobwebs yet though!

@whatmattersisthatyoulove

CompleteBarstool my granny was Gladys and I think it's a fabulous name, such happy vibes! I also love Beryl, Doris and Thelma. I wanted to name my now 22 year old Mabel, it means love and is so pretty , I obviously couldn't in 1998 but now it's fashionable, I still wish I had.
My mum’s aunt was Agnes Mabel - she went by Mabel as she hated Agnes. It is very a cure name
pregnantncnc · 06/07/2021 20:30

As someone in my mid 20s, I've never met or known of someone called Thelma (old or young - other than Thelma and Louise), and think it very much could come back. Gives me the same vibe as Elsa pre Frozen.

I can see Doris coming back too. Mabel is already popularising, which might go to Mavis, which isn't too much of a stretch to Doris!

I also know of sisters; Esther and Mathilde (Hilde).

I tried to convince DH on Jilly for our DS had he been a girl, I was v much vetoed!

Peering2021 · 06/07/2021 20:30

I predict Kenny will actually be a girl's name in a few years.

Also no Jennies or Jennifers! Not even sure where that name came from.

Oh but Gertrude can be Trudy which is lovely even without Goodnight Mr Tom

Me and my DF used to work in hospitality many years ago. She is stunning and men would literally fall over themselves to get near to here.

Sometimes they would ask me what her name was before they spoke to her. I used to tell them her name was Gertrude but that she was really sensitive about it and they had to make out that they really like the name and that it suited her so well.

BunnyRuddington · 06/07/2021 20:32

*near to her.

Apologies for all of the typos.

otterbaby · 06/07/2021 20:34

I have a baby Olive! It really suits her. Definitely a marmite name but we love it.

I have an Aunt Thelma and a Great-Grandmother Gertrude (goes by Gert) I can't see that one making a comeback anytime soon!

I have a Grandfather Edwin and I've actually seen that name around the baby name boards so that might come back soon too, I wouldn't have expected that!

swampytiggaa · 06/07/2021 20:35

My mom is Thelma 😊 she’s 92.

Her sisters were Laura Ivy and Doris. My Nans were Laura and Lillian.

Apparently my aunty Laura hated her name as it was hopelessly old fashioned in the 20’s and 30’s

Imissmoominmama · 06/07/2021 20:36

What about Vera?

Or my Great Grandma’s name- Blodwyn.

NotNowPlzz · 06/07/2021 20:38

I love Beryl, Thelma, Gladys, Cynthia and Gloria.

Peering2021 · 06/07/2021 20:39

@swampytiggaa strange to think that Laura was seen as old fashioned back then - I see it as a 60/70s name!

Lillian - If memory serves we had baby Lilias in my eldest's nursery in the 2000s, not quite the same.

David and Georgia Tennant have four children called:

Olive
Wilfred
Doris
Birdie

David Mitchell and Victoria Coren-Mitchell have a daughter called Barbara.

Never say never, on any name!

Peering2021 · 06/07/2021 20:40

I also like Sylvia which is probably due for a 50s revival!

MrsClatterbuck · 06/07/2021 20:40

I still have my Beryl the Peril annuals so not sure about the name. I do know one Beryl who would be in her fifties. Most of those names mentioned I know someone with them or grew up knowing adults with them. I do like the name Sadie which women called Sarah often got called years ago. Also the name Margaret also got changed to Daisy. Think it's to do with the French name Marguerite which means Daisy.

Miarara · 06/07/2021 20:40

@BeautyGoesToBenidorm I love Mavis!

FayeFayeFayeFayeFaye · 06/07/2021 20:41

Oh I quite like Thora.

Doris, Beryl and Thelma are awful.

ElephantCup · 06/07/2021 20:41

@Peering2021

Jacqui - or Jacqueline! That's such a beautiful name. Why no baby Jacquelines?
My niece is called Jacqueline, she’s 13
Peering2021 · 06/07/2021 20:41

I also had a great aunty Mavis!! Honestly so many great Aunties. When you hear it without thinking of old ladies it's a very neat name for a girl.

My dad was Donald. That’s not had a revival as yet. Both grandads were Sydney which I really wanted to use for one of my daughters but it really didn’t go with our surname.

I’ve seen a few teenage Barry’s recently which surprised me. And my 12 year old went to primary with a warren…

Peering2021 · 06/07/2021 20:46

Barry! There's a blast from the past!

My ex brother in law is a Douglas - it's grown on me.

Lostmyway86 · 06/07/2021 20:46

I like it! Can also see Doris coming back. And I know two Peggy's...one of them my niece

LassLa · 06/07/2021 20:51

I can’t imagine a baby Debbie or Sandra. Or Bev. Could be wrong though!

I do know of a teenage Brian, which surprised me. Various uncles/male family members have the names Leslie, Raymond, Clive, Sydney, Melvyn, and Harold. Others are fashionable know though - I know of baby boys called Stanley, Ronnie, and Bertie.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/07/2021 20:53

On threads like this before, I've mentioned Nigel, which is a name I've always liked. I think I'm on my own there, though!

Can't see Harold making a comeback any time soon.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/07/2021 20:55

@Peering2021

I also like Sylvia which is probably due for a 50s revival!
I definitely think Sylvia will come back very soon. Ada came back partially on the back of Ava's popularity, so I think Sylvia will ride on the tail of Sophia/Sofia (plus V heavy names like Eva/Evelyn).

I can also see Freda/Frida coming back (due to Freya), plus Lillian (thanks to Lily) and Vivien (because of Evelyn). I think people like names that remind them of top 100/popular names (so aren't too "weird") yet are currently underused so their child might be the only one in their class.

Amdone123 · 06/07/2021 20:55

Alma ! Reminds me if Coronation Street. On a thread here the other day, someone was asking about Alva and I thought of Alma.
Thelma not as nice. I dislike Mabel, can't understand that choice. As for Mavis ! ( Coronation Street. Again).
A friend of mine had Elsie. I like it but my other friends say they really don't.
It does seem sometimes that people go as 'old ' as they dare, without any thought for the poor child ! It's like a competition.
Choose Tracy and you're well ahead of the game !
