Thelma.

What do you think? It's definitely original these days. Not sure it's shaken off the cobwebs yet though!

Yep no Gillians or even baby Jills. I haven't met a Jill in years!

Joyce is lovely. Joy for short.

Thora is quite cool. I wonder if the Dame Thora connection has put people off it. It seems to tick a lot of the right boxes otherwise - Scandi, uncommon, elegant.

I’m 35 and went to school with a Jacqui - that seemed quite dated back then as my mum had a couple of friends with that name. The name stood out amongst the Sarahs and Lauras and Beckys.

@BunnyRuddington

There is a child in my daughter's class called Thelma. They are 4.

I think it'll make a proper comeback soon. I've already heard of babies called Joyce, Beryl and Doris.

Poor little Beryl and Doris.

@Peering2021

I remember Katie Boyle on the back page of the TV Times c. 1985 or thereabouts (agony column) advising an elderly woman who hated her name of Elsie and Katie suggested switching a letter or two and calling herself Elise. Both are pretty I think.
My gran was Elsie and she forbade us from using her name for dd as she disliked it so much.

Can’t see Eunice or Bernice coming back, though Beatrice is always popular on here.

DillyDot · 06/07/2021 20:09

@StarryStarrySocks

I see your Thelma and I raise you Beryl. Doubt that will ever make a comeback either!
But you would have said the same about Ruby in the 1990s. Someone always had a Great Aunt Ruby who was a bit too fond of sherry; you couldn't imagine it ever being popular again.
Peering2021 · 06/07/2021 20:09

Jacqui - or Jacqueline! That's such a beautiful name. Why no baby Jacquelines?

I think Beryl was always a bit of a dowdy scullery maid name whereas Ruby was the housemaid who was a bit sexy and loose.

Phantasmo · 06/07/2021 20:14

having said that, Ruby the maid from Upstairs Downstairs was anything but sexy Grin

Staffy1 · 06/07/2021 20:16

It brings to mind Marge’s awful sisters in the Simpsons, although I think they are actually Selma and Patty.

Peering2021 · 06/07/2021 20:17

Laura and Lorna are nice albeit relatively recent. I agree with a PP that Thora will have a comeback thanks to the Greta/Scandi effect.

A few years ago, you wouldn't have belied Olive would have made a comeback, it was always associated with Olive from On the Buses.

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 06/07/2021 20:18

I like Thelma and Thora. Both very nice names.

Peering2021 · 06/07/2021 20:19

I think Olivia took over - is Olive a thing now? I've not come across any Olives

NeepNeepNeep · 06/07/2021 20:19

Are there any baby Kirstys?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/07/2021 20:19

CompleteBarstool my granny was Gladys and I think it's a fabulous name, such happy vibes! I also love Beryl, Doris and Thelma. I wanted to name my now 22 year old Mabel, it means love and is so pretty , I obviously couldn't in 1998 but now it's fashionable, I still wish I had.

FlaminEckVera · 06/07/2021 20:27

@Peering2021 NO.

Sorry...

Peering2021 · 06/07/2021 20:28

Colin - one of those names when you say it a few times you think, what a nice boys name. Weird how we carry these things along.

Where are the newborn Kennys!
