Thelma.

What do you think? It's definitely original these days. Not sure it's shaken off the cobwebs yet though!

Ohhh but Harold is the original Harry surely! I can see it working now.. Nigel is a tricky one to relocate from the 70s.

Tracy! Where on earth did that appear from! It's a pretty name, I just wonder why and where it sprung up in 1982.

Actually more like 1974 for Tracy. Doesn't it sound nice though if you just say it?

Yes Tracy is a lovely name when you strip all preconceptions about it away.

DuckonaBike · 06/07/2021 21:00

I know someone who just had a baby Sylvia! I think it’s beautiful. So is Thora.

My granny was Doris and I’d love to see it come back. Her middle name was Myra which might take a bit longer.

@Peering2021

Colin - one of those names when you say it a few times you think, what a nice boys name. Weird how we carry these things along.

Where are the newborn Kennys!

My 4 year old son is Ken. He is half Japanese and so it works in both countries. In Japan there are lots of Kens , not so many here though. I love it, it suits him perfectly 😍

In the James Bond book (and later film) On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Diana Rigg plays an extremely wealthy and well-educated character called Tracy, which is a pet name for Theresa. I assume at that time it was posh.

Harry was the short form for Henry mostly. Goodness knows why.

Barry! There's a blast from the past!

My ex brother in law is a Douglas - it's grown on me.

I considered Douglas for my eldest daughter. It was a female name in Tudor times. I was talked out of that too 😢
Phantasmo · 06/07/2021 21:04

I reckon Tracy must have started to get popular after Grace Kelly's character in High Society which would have been made in the late 50s. And then it would have climbed steadily for the next decade or so. I'm sure she made the name seem fresh and beautiful!

Here's a vintage name that I haven't seen used yet.
Phantasmo · 06/07/2021 21:05

Douglas for a girl! Oh my, that would be bold Grin

DotsandCo · 06/07/2021 21:05

I too love Beryl...it sounds pretty when you say it without thinking 'old lady'. And it's a very lovely stone too 👍🥰

LassLa · 06/07/2021 21:06

I had a colleague called Katie and lots of people have misheard it as Tracy or Stacy! When emails came to Tracy they were forwarded on to her Grin

Jean/Joan is another one not heard now. I think Jeannie is really cute!

Handsnotwands · 06/07/2021 21:07

There’s a Gloria and a Phil in ds’s reception class

Redsquirrel5 · 06/07/2021 21:11

@CompleteBarstool

What about Gladys, that's not made a comeback yet has it?
Yes, I have a Gladys. A black bantam.
Notallowedtobesick · 06/07/2021 21:12

We had a baby Dorris at work the other day. 3 day old little Dorris. I sang calamity Jane songs all the way home.

Clarabellawilliamson · 06/07/2021 21:16

I teach a few girls called Gloria and Joyce at secondary- but we have lots of those type of names (Glory, Blessing, Joy, Merit etc).
I really like some of the names on this thread!

It's not great. Just remembered my mum used to call me 'Thelma Thick-Thighs' 🙄 Plus, the OW is Nora Ephron's 'Heartburn' is called Thelma.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 06/07/2021 21:31

DS would have been Thora if he had been a girl. One of my favourite names of all time.

MrsOrMiss · 06/07/2021 21:31

Don't see many Rennes (Reenie), Margarets, Wendys are Kevins these days.

When I called DS Joseph - some 38 years ago - everyone pulled a face. Ahead of the curve I was Grin

Amdone123 · 06/07/2021 21:38

@MrsOrMiss, Joseph is a lovely name. It's classic. It's one of those names that suits all ages.
Gosh no, no Wendys anymore. I taught a few Renees ( but pronounced the French way ).

omgthepain · 06/07/2021 21:44

My daughter has a friend called Thora and her sister is called Maud

omgthepain · 06/07/2021 21:44

Named after the Granny's

Billandben444 · 06/07/2021 21:55

We have a teenage Gertrude in the family, always called Gerty.

Bbq1 · 06/07/2021 22:00

Staying with the Scrooby Do theme how about Daphne? Very pretty really. Can't see Hilda, Norma, Ida, Mavis or Maude having much of a revival though.
