Thelma.

What do you think? It's definitely original these days. Not sure it's shaken off the cobwebs yet though!

Cynthia is lovely. I like Beryl wildly over Clementine. The only Gladys I ever met is a heroin addict & mother of ... 8? The kids all had names like Edward, Sophie, James...

Standrewsschool · 06/07/2021 19:50

I like Doris. I think Thelma has a better chance than Beryl.

Can I add Joyce to the mix?

moose62 · 06/07/2021 19:50

I had three great aunts called Barbara, Gladys and Olive!

Fleetw00d · 06/07/2021 19:50

Similar to Thora which I don't see now, I had a great aunty Thora and I'm surprised it's not made a come back with it sounding like Thor and norse names being all the rage

ILoveShula · 06/07/2021 19:53

Thora is lovely and makes me think of the wonderful Dame Thora Hird

Thelma and Doris are nice. I think Beryl is creeping back.

Peering2021 · 06/07/2021 19:53

I wonder when my childhood friend names will come back like Sarah Kelly and Nicola will see a revival.

My female grandparents were Elizabeth & Phoebe. Both still in!

DH's were Doris & Ida. Not so in.

CaMePlaitPas · 06/07/2021 19:54

There is a child in my daughter's class called Thelma. They are 4.

dementedma · 06/07/2021 19:55

I love Beryl. It’s a beautiful green gemstone

moofolk · 06/07/2021 19:55

I like it

Guavafish · 06/07/2021 19:56

Eirlys

Peering2021 · 06/07/2021 19:57

God bless Dame Thora Hird. That's how we'd describe mopey weather - "it's a bit Thora out there/ this cup of tea's a bit Thora = warm and wet" Brilliant actress though. I think we were thinking of the Alan Bennett monologues.

I have only ever met one Mary.

1starwars2 · 06/07/2021 20:01

I am still amazed by the popularity of Elsie, and that's been popular for years.
I still think it best suits the elderly.

Ravenspeckingontheroof · 06/07/2021 20:01

Gillian. Not one single baby born in England or Wales in 2018. It’s really not coming back. Ever.

Peering2021 · 06/07/2021 20:02

Ohh just googled Alan Bennett and god bless he's still with us! I loved Talking Heads, the modern remakes weren't a patch on the originals. Sorry tangent.

Ada's making a come back I think. It sounds lovely. I really like that.

All with the same energy, and all from various members of my family tree:

Norma
Kathleen
Marjorie
Doreen
Hilda
Maureen

KaptainKaveman · 06/07/2021 20:02

Velma?
Selma?
I went to school with a Helma.

Peering2021 · 06/07/2021 20:04

I remember Katie Boyle on the back page of the TV Times c. 1985 or thereabouts (agony column) advising an elderly woman who hated her name of Elsie and Katie suggested switching a letter or two and calling herself Elise. Both are pretty I think.

I wonder if Mavis will ever make a comeback? 🤔

NeepNeepNeep · 06/07/2021 20:04

I went to school with so many Gillians. Maybe it will come back in 30 years.

RightOnTheEdge · 06/07/2021 20:04

Well I guess it will only shake the cobwebs off if people start using it.
Someone has to be brave and start it off OP!

I was surprised when little Elsies started appearing but I wouldn't bat an eyelid now

CosyAcorn · 06/07/2021 20:05

I really like Gladys and Doris. But I don't really see them coming back either.

debwong · 06/07/2021 20:07

I'm still waiting for Clytemnestra to make a comeback.

BunnyRuddington · 06/07/2021 20:07

There is a child in my daughter's class called Thelma. They are 4.

I think it'll make a proper comeback soon. I've already heard of babies called Joyce, Beryl and Doris.
