Favourite name is a pelvic floor toner

My other half and I have loved the name Elvie long before I was pregnant. I'm due a baby girl early January and this name was locked in, we had even started calling my bump Elvie. Unfortunately the other night I stumbled across a pelvic floor toner and breast pump brand with the same name. I'm absolutely gutted and not sure we can call her this anymore, but no other name we like comes close :( Can I have your opinions please?

It does remind me of the breast pump, but I’m not sure that would put me off, or that many other people would have the same thought. It’s not a negative connotation after all, it’s just a breast pump.

30 years ago one of my favourite names for DD1 was Alexa. Glad now we didnt choose it.

I came into this thread thinking ‘I didn’t know Kegel was a name ’. I have heard of neither the device nor the name Elvie. So certainly not everyone has this association.

I am glad you aren’t going to call your child Kegel though

@Thisismytimetoshine uh no , I think the OP wanted opinions on whether people would think the baby was named after certain maternity devices.

I think you have to remember that by posting on MN you are asking exactly the target market of Elvie (I certainly get a lot of targeted ads for the pump on my social media) but if you were to ask almost any other demographic I suspect that the brand recognition would be almost zero. They are niche products and Elvie is very unlikely to become a household brand like Alexa.

I think the problem is that Elvie is quite an unusual name so for anyone who has heard of the brand, it's possibly the only thing they will think of, as opposed to Ella's food pouches, where Ella is a more common name. Having said that, I agree that it's not a huge issue because not many people will have heard of the brand.

Elvie is a sweet name, I think if you have your heart set on it you should go for it.

I have never heard of the brand in my life. Elvie does however, for me at least, have a similar feel to a lot of top 100 names: Evie, Alfie, Albie, Elsie, Evelyn, Eva, Eliza, Edith/Edie. So you may find yourself calling Elvie across the playground as another mum calls Evie and someone else yells Albie, Edie

Never heard of the brand, or the name before, but I have been diligently doing pelvic floor exercises while reading the thread, which is always a bonus.

I know a little 4 year old Elvie and she’s very sweet, suits her name perfectly.

DS1 has a name that is on a type of bread. I don’t care, I was mildly miffed when I realised but really, brands last a few years but your DD will have her name forever.

Plus I’m a mother of 3 and I’ve never heard of the Elvie brand and I’m sure lots of other people haven’t either.

Elvie makes me think of LV insurance rather than breast pumps etc but then my children are older.

I have never heard of the name Elvie. Also, I have never heard of a pump with that name. Saying that, I am a FTM and I haven't researched pumps yet, so there's no reason I would be aware of the Elvie pump.

I don't necessarily think everyone will associate the name with the pump. I guarentee 99% of men won't!
It will only really be pregnant woman or those who have a baby who might make a connection between the name and the product.

How about spelling it Elvy instead of Elvie?

Can also be a girl’s name and it’s not at all unusual!

Aha I've worked it out. Nice name - was on my shortlist but DH said he'd forever think of Mr Bean.

I know someone who called their daughter the same name as a car model and it was what I thought of at first but now she is older it's her name only. Breast pump makers are not going to be a major household name!

My son has the same name as an airplane manufacturer and a financial services company 🤷‍♀️ If you like the name then use it. There's always the possibility of a company hijacking a common name, looking at you Alexa.

I don't think you should worry too much about the association with the brand.

I personally prefer Elva or Alva to Elvie but that's just my preference. Stick to it if you love it.

If you love it, use it. Anything else won't feel right

What about Evie? Now you've seen it you won't unsee it I to be in the back of your mind , I wouldn't use it because of it , sorry people have been rude about.the name I think it's nice and congratulations!.x

I have heard of the brand - it’s quite big in the US and the pump is very trendy. I would avoid that name, what if the brand gets huge in 5-10years? Imagine being called Medela.

I honestly think you could stop a hundred people in the street in most UK towns and maybe 25 - 30 of them would recognise the brand name Medela out of context as a baby feeding brand. Probably the best known brand is Tommee Tippee, yet Tommy was one of the highest-climbing names in the 2019 statistics!

how about a twist on it, like Velvie?
