My other half and I have loved the name Elvie long before I was pregnant. I'm due a baby girl early January and this name was locked in, we had even started calling my bump Elvie. Unfortunately the other night I stumbled across a pelvic floor toner and breast pump brand with the same name. I'm absolutely gutted and not sure we can call her this anymore, but no other name we like comes close :( Can I have your opinions please?

I think it's a nice name, OP. I used to know an Elvie and she was lovely. I think you should go for it - the breast pump isn't that much of a household name (I'd never heard of it) and it certainly won't mean anything to your DD's friends. Their mums, maybe, but relatively few of them and for a short time. Once they know your DD, they will think of her, not the breast pump, when people mention her name.

I hated the name Elvie when i first read it, but it's growing on me now. I do know a few people with the pumps but It's not something that will stick around forever, it's not like her school friends are going to know it is it? I'd go with it, I love unique names!

Bloody hell, all you people saying Elvie is an awful name do you actually believe that everybody thinks that the name that you have given your own offspring is wonderful. We all like different than things, I am sure some people don't like my DC's name, similarly I am not overly keen on every name of all my friend's kids, but I don't tell them, it is none of my business. I think the name is lovely, and I have never heard of the breast pump, but I imagine it was named after a person, so you would not be naming your child after a piece of maternity equipment.

LittleDoritt · 29/08/2020 22:56

I've never heard of the brand.

What about Ailbhe (Ail-va)?

Marlena1 · 29/08/2020 22:59

Ps I dont think the pump would stop me tho!

Quire · 29/08/2020 23:00

A name from an Irish legend that I’ve always liked — a friend has an adult child called it — has become a brand of not particularly nice chocolates.

coronafiona · 29/08/2020 23:01

It reminds me of LV, the insurance company. Sorry OP

singersarp · 29/08/2020 23:01

Yeah the first thing I thought of was the little widget I had to shove up my foof. Sorry.

BadDucks · 29/08/2020 23:03

What about Avery instead?

Littlepond · 29/08/2020 23:03

I love the name Elvie! I’ve never heard it before but it’s lovely!! I’ve not heard of the breast pump brand but my kids are teens so it’s been a while since I needed a breast pump...

Perhaps a different spelling to the Brand would be enough to distance the name from it though, or use Elvie as a nickname ?

Or call her Louise Victoria and go with LV

frustrationcentral · 29/08/2020 23:05

I know an Elva, she's a beauty and really suits her name

Inkpaperstars · 29/08/2020 23:11

It's really nice actually, it's grown on me more during this thread. I think you should go for it OP.

ZolaGrey · 29/08/2020 23:13

I guessed the name from the thread title. When the Elvie company started advertising it reminded me of the insurance company LV. It's a minefield!

AlviesMam · 29/08/2020 23:14

Love the name Elvie!!

We named our boy Alvie Grin

babychange12 · 29/08/2020 23:14

I thought of the brand straight away as soon as I read your post title Grin

Tillygetsit · 29/08/2020 23:23

I don't think it matters too much but if it really bothers you, how about Sylvie?

pallisers · 29/08/2020 23:23

I thought you were planning on naming your child Kegel. Elvie is nice. never heard of the brand.

Clearthinking · 29/08/2020 23:24

Love the name!!! Please do not discard it because of the breast pumps! That lots of us haven't heard of! How many boys are called Tom and you don't automatically think Tommy Tippee better steer clear of that!?!

Prettybluepigeons · 29/08/2020 23:26

Elvi is also a brand of clothing for plus size women

fibeee · 29/08/2020 23:30

If you really love the name I think you should just go for it. Does it really matter that it’s also the name of a femtech company?

My surname is the same as the name of a well known electronics company. Not one person as ever commented on this and tbh I would find it a bit odd if they did.

newnamewhosthis · 29/08/2020 23:33

Elvie would make me think of Elvive Shampoo Blush

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 29/08/2020 23:38

Whatever names you post about, some people will like it, some won't.
Regardless of my feelings about the name (I quite like it), I wouldn't ever have associated it with anything unpleasant.

CherryValance · 29/08/2020 23:39

I like it and have never heard of the brand.
