Favourite name is a pelvic floor toner

My other half and I have loved the name Elvie long before I was pregnant. I'm due a baby girl early January and this name was locked in, we had even started calling my bump Elvie. Unfortunately the other night I stumbled across a pelvic floor toner and breast pump brand with the same name. I'm absolutely gutted and not sure we can call her this anymore, but no other name we like comes close :( Can I have your opinions please?

I haven’t heard of the breast pump or toner. Even if I had I don’t think that’s a reason not to use the name, I think Elvie is lovely.

I'd use Evelyn or Genevieve or something similar, then use Elvie as a nn. Or how about Sylvie?

It's a lovely name. I haven't heard of the breast pump. Presumably neither will kids at school when she gets to that age though.

I think of the Elvie breast pump because I have one. I'm sure the majority of people won't though!

I liked the name Clover but didn't use it because of the butter spread association! I'm aware of Elvie as those two items and never heard it used as a name before so probably wouldn't use it but kids at school would most likely be unaware

It's probably less of a concern in regards to schoolkids but it might be an issue with the odd quiet snigger at parent & baby groups. That's the demographic who are more likely to be aware of the brand. I highly doubt anyone would be rude enough to bring it up to your face though and if they do then that's their issue not yours. Personally I wouldn't use the name though.

Would you consider an anglicised Irish name, Alva, or Alvy? (From Ailbhe, or Al-veh.)

Elvie makes me think of things elfin and mystical (not sure if that's your intention), so Arwen or Guinevere. Or how about Eleanor?

I found out the day before we registered DS2 that his full name matched the name of a local(ish) sexual health clinic. Still went ahead with it

I don’t think it’s a problem. Elvie have a very specific and quite niche market and I don’t imagine their products will cut through as household names in the way that other brands have, eg Alexa.

One thing I would warn you of: my DS has an unusual but not unheard of Biblical name which slightly resembles a much more popular biblical name (same three opening letters and two more letters in common). He has to attend quite a few medical appointments and inevitably the HCP will glance at the list, not read it properly, and read his name as the more popular one. It’s a minor issue and we just politely correct them but I anticipate it will continue when he starts school. It is likely that people will glance at Elvie and read it as Evie because the latter is popular, but it’s a minor annoyance rather than a reason not to use the name.

Never heard of the brand name for either product. It wouldn't cross my mind.

It's a pretty name and I would go ahead with it OP. Shame on you posters who are saying they don't like the name, you are being rude! The OP didn't actually ask if you liked the name. There are a lot of names which could be associated with products (I believe there is a Willow breast pump, and there are lots of girls named Willow), I really don't think you need to worry about it. Go ahead OP and enjoy your little girl, and her name.

If I heard it I would think "oh where have I heard that before?" Then I'd realise it was from the breast pump, then I'd instantly assume that your intentions were not to name your child after a breast pump, then that would be the last I thought about it. I think it's a nice name btw, not that it matters.

It's a really nice name OP but if you have reservations about it enough to canvas opinion on a forum then personally I would give it a miss. It will just create unnecessary worry on the days the thought drifts into the back of your mind.

Makes me think of elvers, the little eel thingies. Or Elvis (he lives!).

But I wasn't hugely familiar with the femtech brand, on the bright side!

It's definitely a marmite name, I personally really dislike it but clearly some people here don't mind it.

It reminds me of lots of things (including the pump) I would definitely steer clear.

To those with positive comments, I really appreciate your input, thank you so much. It's a hard decision to change something when it's the name you've thought you'd use for months.

To those who hate the name, this was not the opinion I was asking for, maybe I should have made it clearer that we love the name, the opinion I wanted was regarding breast pump/pelvic floor toner. Frankly I don't care if people hate it, you probably would dislike our whole name list 😂

Going to have a good think and maybe back to the drawing board, we will see! :)

....and to those who wouldn't call their baby that (not due to having the name) due to the breast pump/pelvic floor toner problem, thank you for your honesty, I needed genuine thoughts and feelings x
