Favourite name is a pelvic floor toner

My other half and I have loved the name Elvie long before I was pregnant. I'm due a baby girl early January and this name was locked in, we had even started calling my bump Elvie. Unfortunately the other night I stumbled across a pelvic floor toner and breast pump brand with the same name. I'm absolutely gutted and not sure we can call her this anymore, but no other name we like comes close :( Can I have your opinions please?

I have an Elvie breast pump and it's amazing!! So I would always associate it with that but I'm sure many people won't!

I hadn't heard of the brand either. I've met one Elvie who was lovely, but in her case it was short for Elvira (which as far as I know she never used!)

I've never heard of it as a brand name - I don't think it's that well known. My DS is called Felix - like a cat food, of course - but we know him & never think of the product in connection with him. I think any name becomes so strongly associated with the person that anything else becomes irrelevant.

I think it is a rather sweet name - can see why you liked it, OP ! I would have assumed it was a short form of Elvira - the ghost from the play ( and film) Blithe Spirit.

Go for it. It's a nice name.
And it's not the first time a female name has been used as a brand name. Isn't there a contraceptive pill called Yasmin?

I like the name. I've heard of the breast pump too. If I met a baby with that name, it might briefly cross my mind but I wouldn't let that put you off! It's not that well known of a product to the general public. Although I liked the name Flora and DH vetoed that because of the butter!

It sounds like the insurance company, LV. I’m afraid I don’t like it at all, sorry. What about Effie (though that sounds like FE), Eve or Evie?

Yikes OP think people have been a bit mean. Elvie is a perfectly fine name. Not my taste either but perfectly fine. Dont worry about the products unless it massively bothers you. It wont be an issue in 5 years time. If you cant get past it - then you'll find another lovely name I'm sure. Best of luck x

I had heard of the brand but didn't immediately associate it at all. I can think of quite a few people I know who's names could be linked to a brand, but I'd not really thought of it until now. A relatives name is a brand of weighing scales which she used to joke about when she'd put on a few pounds. But it's never been mentioned by anyone else.

It's a pretty name. It's inoffensive. If you love it, go for it. With my youngest I was put off several names I really liked by opinionated family members. I still regret it sometimes.

What about Elva? I think it’s Scandinavian.

I like it. You may not want to know this but I call my car Elvie because it's registration is LV and I spend so much time in it and rely on it I think of it as my friend. Lol. I know, I'm sad!

My DS name is apparently the name of a label company. Didn't know before as I had never heard of them and the only people that have said that have been 60+ so it doesn't bother me that his peers will associate it.

You will find when DD is little, other new mums may think of that because they will have been targeted with ads for the brand, but i thibk that would quickly fade as its a niche product.

I also have a friend called Flora and I never associated it with margarine until I saw someone mention it here.

I think it’s OK and you could use it, like people use Flora, Felix, Alexa, etc. Or You could consider a name starting with L and V like Lara Victoria, with Elvie as a nickname.

And if you really really love it, crack on! In 30 years she will still have that name and the brand is unlikely to be around/big.

It will only be odd for a few years and even then people get used to names very quickly once they know the person!

Elvie is an awful name.

I wouldn't make the association, but my youngest is 4 and I think it's a relatively new brand. It's fully possible that other mums deep in that newborn stage will make the same connection, but I doubt the wider society will. I guess it depends how much it bothers you!

For what it's worth, I think it's a lovely name, and I have a child with a name only 1/2 letters different with the same sound, so that's all I hear really!

I have friends who swear by the Elvie breast pump; when I read your title I thought “mhmm isn’t that the best pump brand (as well as pelvic floor thing)?” not “Jesus no that’s the breast pump brand!”

I honestly don’t think it matters. I probably wouldn’t call my daughter Alexa. But Elvie? Absolutely no issue.

(And ignore all the people saying they don’t like the name because I don’t think that matters either.)

This happened with a few of the names I really liked for my DC - found a name I loved then something came along that made it a possible issue. Personally I ditched the names and moved on to others, and I’ve never thought about those old favourites again because my DCs’ names are them, if that makes sense.

However, if you’re really set on the name change it to Elva and then you can use Elvie as a diminutive and it’s far less likely people will then think of the pumps and toners.

Spell it the Irish way - similar sound, totally different spelling.

Choose a name that’s very close like Elfie or Elke.

Choose a new name that somewhat connected eg in meaning, initial letter, etc.

My ex Mil ( who was lovely) was called Elva.

I have an Elvie pump and I think the name is very pretty. But here’s the thing - breast pumps are only ever going to be interesting to a very small % of people, for a short amount of time. The names of them to an even smaller %. Of those, only a small % are going to be interested in a £250 pump.

So what I’m saying is, if you love it - go for it. The average person that your baby Elvie comes across won’t ever have heard of the brand. And if they do - and they say - “oh, like the breast pump” you smile sweetly and say: “I suppose!” like the mothers of Alexas (wireless assistant) and Floras (butter) do.

Choose a name you love, sod everyone else.
