First off, I'll say that music plays a huge role in my life, namely rap from the mid-west USA (Michigan) and I really do want a name for my daughter that absolutely nobody else has already thought of. I told my parents earlier and they straight-up laughed in my face Sad but I feel I've got the perfect name.

So, this is what I really want it to be - Michigan Lyricism. I also should say that I love rhyming names and plus they would follow my rap theme. So Michigan Lyricism and our surname is Keegan.

Will people laugh at this?

People’s middle names rarely come up so Lyricism (while not to my taste) wouldn’t necessarily be a problem. I’m not a fan of place name names and (assuming you’re in the UK) Michigan seems a bit odd. Also, when I lived in England I found a lot of people who couldn’t pronounce it (supposed to be Mish-igan), or Chicago or Houston come to that.

Onestepup · 16/07/2020 23:57

Michigan is a place not a person, and does not rhyme with Lyricism.

Will people laugh at this?

Yes, but I think you already know that.

badg3r · 16/07/2020 23:57

Honestly, yes. People will probably laugh but not to your face if they are nice! I quite like Michigan bit together is it quite a mouthful.

VodselForDinner · 16/07/2020 23:58

Yes, they’ll laugh. At both the first name and middle name.

Michigan, for me, brings to mind Michigan J. Frog, the dancing frog out of the old cartoons.

JollyHostess · 16/07/2020 23:58

I'm not feeling the middle name too much but Michigan Keegan has a good bounce to it.
Maybe just Lyric might make a better middle name but might be better to steer clear.

Aquamarine1029 · 16/07/2020 23:59

Yes, they probably will. Please remember it's your child that will have to live with the burden of their name, not you. Imagine being an adult, you're asked what your name is and you have to respond "Michigan."

Please have a massive rethink.

BanditoShipman · 16/07/2020 23:59

Yes they will laugh

Smallsteps88 · 17/07/2020 00:00

That’s a real stinker of a name to put on a child OP.

Sakura7 · 17/07/2020 00:03

Don't do it. The poor child has to live with the name and they really won't thank you.

You can pick something unusual that is still an actual name, and that won't get your child bullied.

MrsEricBana · 17/07/2020 00:06

I think if it is important to you then go for it. It wouldn't be for me. Initials MLK could lead to nickname Milky? Also Michigan Keegan is a bit tricky and a fairly long way down the Michelle Keegan route. Sorry.

MrsEricBana · 17/07/2020 00:07

Lyrical (sim to Lyra) instead of Lyricism?

Topseyt · 17/07/2020 00:08

Yes, they will laugh. It is utterly cringeworthy.

Don't saddle your child with such awful and idiotic names. They won't thank you, and they are the one who will have to live with it.

My DD has a friend who has one of these dreadful yoonique names. He is very embarrassed about his name and when he introduces himself to new people he says that his parents hated him when he was born. I find that quite a sad statement from him.

Don't do it!

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 17/07/2020 00:09

This is a joke right ?

Greenmarmalade · 17/07/2020 00:10

Michigan is OK- not to my taste but acceptable as a name. I think the middle name is too much. If you want it to mean lyrics/words, maybe Lexi/Lexia?

DramaAlpaca · 17/07/2020 00:12

A very big no to Michigan.

As a pp suggested, Lyric would be preferable to Lyricism.

xmummy2princesx · 17/07/2020 00:13

Lyric woild be better

DisobedientHamster · 17/07/2020 00:14

Of course people will laugh. It's a shite name. And Brits will say it 'MiTCHigan' not even the US pronunciations of 'Mish-igan'.

Commentutappelles · 17/07/2020 00:14

Depends where you live... I've taught lots of children with very unique names but I teach in London. It's not the worst I've heard, but it is certainly niche.

ShyTown · 17/07/2020 00:14

As a Midwest resident I’m a huge fan of Lake Michigan at this time of year, we’re off on vacation in 2 weeks and really looking forward to it, but I think it’s completely ridiculous as a baby name. Like a PP I’ve also heard some British friends from back home butcher the pronunciation. It definitely doesn’t rhyme for Lyricism so not sure how you’re saying it.

Greenmarmalade · 17/07/2020 00:15

The names at any diverse school are varied so I doubt Michigan would be laughed at if you live in a multicultural place.

WitchWife · 17/07/2020 00:16

I think Michigan is quite nice, and while I’d find it surprising it would be a good surprise once I got used to it. If she becomes a “Mish” everyone will assume Michelle anyway.

Lyricism is... not to my taste. Partly because it’s so long and sounds quite pompous (like a book review, like calling your kid “Verbosity”). How about Lyria?

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 17/07/2020 00:17

Michigan Keegan sounds very like Michelle Keegan the actress, she will get called Mitch or machine gun Kegun, wouldn’t be my choice but I’ve heard worse.

HeddaGarbled · 17/07/2020 00:21

Why do you want a name for your daughter that no one else has thought of? That’s narcissistic. She’s not an accessory to your obsession with a niche musical genre.

PennyArcade · 17/07/2020 00:22

I’m not sure if you are serious?

How about Mitchell and scrap the middle name?

user1471481356 · 17/07/2020 00:22

Michigan could possibly be ok for a boy, boy for a girl. It’s similar to a lot of made up/place names these days. Lyricism is awful though. And all together the three names are a lot. You could add in a simple name as an extra middle name that they can then choose to go by when they get teased.
