First off, I'll say that music plays a huge role in my life, namely rap from the mid-west USA (Michigan) and I really do want a name for my daughter that absolutely nobody else has already thought of. I told my parents earlier and they straight-up laughed in my face Sad but I feel I've got the perfect name.

So, this is what I really want it to be - Michigan Lyricism. I also should say that I love rhyming names and plus they would follow my rap theme. So Michigan Lyricism and our surname is Keegan.

Will people laugh at this?

Your DD will end up being called Mitch or Ganny.

The middle name is a no from me. It sounds like a joke, not a name. Maybe a stage name?

If I had that name I'd deed poll change it at the first moment I could. Probably to something like Jane or Mary just to have a name nobody noticed.

Which may be an idea for you? It's cheap and easy to change your name by deed poll, so perhaps if you're really attached to it you could consider using it yourself? Then give your DD a unique name that sounds more like an actual name - or at least with a middle name that gives her the option of using it if she wants to be inconspicuous?

TimeWastingButFun · 17/07/2020 00:28

Of course people will laugh. It's a shite name. And Brits will say it 'MiTCHigan' not even the US pronunciations of 'Mish-igan'.
I've honestly learned something new at the ripe old age of 49 - I have always said Mitch-Igan. Tbh I hate the first and middle name and it totally doesn't go with your surname.

Sakura7 · 17/07/2020 00:29

She’s not an accessory to your obsession with a niche musical genre.

This ^

I'm passionate about Liverpool Football Club. Should I call my DD Anfield or Melwood? Maybe Jurgen or Rafa? Hmm

NoProblem123 · 17/07/2020 00:32

Had a horse called Lyric, everyone ended up calling him Eric because that’s what they thought I was shouting across the field.
Michigan no. Mishigan is ok for a pet though.
And like others have said, it doesn’t even rhyme.
Come back with some more suggestions.

Allmyeye · 17/07/2020 00:34

I had to check it wasn’t April 1st. Your poor child. Please don’t do it.

LonginesPrime · 17/07/2020 00:36

Michigan J. Frog, the dancing frog

GrinGrinGrin

campion · 17/07/2020 00:39

Yes they'll laugh ...but I think you're just having a laugh!

LimpidPools · 17/07/2020 00:40

I'm sorry OP, but no, that's not a kind name to give. Michigan lyricism sounds like a sub-genre, and even if you think that sounds great, it's not. Not as the only name you have available to introduce yourself with.
They are both good words on their own, but they don't make good names for your poor defenceless daughter.

Oh, and as a shortening, 'Mishee' (phonetic) is a German shortening for Michael.

FancyPants20 · 17/07/2020 00:41

@TimeWastingButFun

Flashback to that time I realised about Arkansas and Yosemite.

Anyway, they're shite names. You can't go around just calling your child random words. I mean, you can, but please don't.

CannonCaboodle · 17/07/2020 00:43

Is this serious?
If so, this is dreadful.

BlackCrow · 17/07/2020 00:44

At the London comprehensive school my DC attend, no one would bat an eyelid at Michigan as a name, I can promise you. At least it's a recognisable word with a standard spelling. It does sound a little masculine to my ears though - just my opinion.

I'm not keen on Lyricism as a name mainly because it's a word I struggle with saying without a slight lisp. Lyrica avoids this and also sounds more like a given name. But a middle name is kind of irrelevant as it's not used day to day so do what you want.

May I ask if you yourself are black OP? If you are - as I would have guessed from your name choices and your love of rap - then these names are fine and nothing out of the ordinary. I can see why they might seem extreme choices to the many people on Mumsnet who don't have much / any contact with black communities though.

SageRosemary · 17/07/2020 00:45

Please don't do it.

You're more than welcome to use my name, Rosemary, I think your child would prefer it!

Are you the mum or the dad?

Africa2go · 17/07/2020 00:45

Ha ha. This must be a wind up. But I'll bite.

  1. They'll laugh
  2. They'll be judgemental on the basis that you've lumbered a child with that name and / or someone wanted to name a child after Michelle Keegan
BackforGood · 17/07/2020 00:46

I also should say that I love rhyming names

But they don't rhyme Confused

However, that is the least of the problems.

The fact they aren't names is a bigger one.

As a pp said - this isn't some accessory for your hobby. This poor little one is going to be a person, for (hopefully) around 85 - 90 years.
They might not laugh, they might just feel sorry for them.
They will regularly be asked how to spell their name(s) and regularly asked about where their names came from.

Torvean32 · 17/07/2020 00:46

The initials would be MLK

Martin Luther King Confused

AdaColeman · 17/07/2020 00:47

It sounds more like a name suitable for a musician’s management company or a record label than for a child. I think it would be quite a burden as a name.
You’ve got hold of the wrong end of the stick about naming a baby, it isn’t so that you can express your own narrow interests, it’s so that the baby can grow into well balanced adult.

Bouncingbelle · 17/07/2020 00:49

Michigan is fine. But Michigan keegan just makes me think of Michelle keegan.

Lyricism is ridiculous, and that’s coming from someone who wanted to give their son Lyric as a middle name. It does rhyme with Michigan and is too much of a mouthful.

Bouncingbelle · 17/07/2020 00:50

doesnt rhyme that should say

Cherrycee · 17/07/2020 00:51

Mischa is in a similar vein and has the benefit of being an actual name. Same for Lyra.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 17/07/2020 01:08

@DisobedientHamster

Of course people will laugh. It's a shite name. And Brits will say it 'MiTCHigan' not even the US pronunciations of 'Mish-igan'.
I've never heard anyone say Mitch-igan. Is that a thing? Confused
thecatneuterer · 17/07/2020 01:15

I've never heard anyone say Mitch-igan. Is that a thing? I don't believe I've ever said the word, but that's certainly how I pronounce it in my head, so probably that is how I would say it too (although maybe not after this thread).

OP - they are both shite names.

Rubybluesy · 17/07/2020 01:17

Why not choose an actual name?!

strawberrypip · 17/07/2020 01:18

I really hope this is a wind up. one of the worst I've seen on here for names - sorry if its not OP but genuinely terrible

locked2020 · 17/07/2020 01:21

I'm not a fan

NotMyTimes · 17/07/2020 01:21

Please remember it's your child that will have to live with the burden of their name, not you.

This ^ I'm sorry but even if you love it you're not the one who has to live with it. Even if most people are polite enough not to laugh to your faces your kid will get bullied for it, and then possibly resent you for it. As much as you love the name love your child more and don't saddle them with something obscure and to your preference that will get the bullied and could even hold them back.
