First off, I'll say that music plays a huge role in my life, namely rap from the mid-west USA (Michigan) and I really do want a name for my daughter that absolutely nobody else has already thought of. I told my parents earlier and they straight-up laughed in my face Sad but I feel I've got the perfect name.

So, this is what I really want it to be - Michigan Lyricism. I also should say that I love rhyming names and plus they would follow my rap theme. So Michigan Lyricism and our surname is Keegan.

Will people laugh at this?

Michigan isn't to my taste but it's passable. It could have some nice NN such as Micha. I'd probably assume your DH was from the US or she was conceived there.

Lyricism really is dreadful thought, in my opinion. It doesn't rhyme and clashes with Michigan. It's an uncomfortable mouthful.

Lyra is lovely as an alternative.

By all means pick a name which means something special to you, but do also consider the wider implications for your child (said as someone that has an unusual name which does cause me issues)

puzzledpiece · 17/07/2020 10:50

It's a totally ridiculous name and you are setting your child up to be laughed at and teased in school.

Is this a joke?

Cherrycee · 17/07/2020 11:16

Mumsnet is very white little England. A favourite here is a girl's name Elizabeth, so you can see the reaction!

I'm neither English or middle class and I think the name is bonkers. Even if (and it's a big if) the kid gets through school unscathed, it will have an effect when she starts applying for jobs. Fair or not, people will make snap judgements.

WaxOnFeckOff · 17/07/2020 11:25

I'm neither English nor middle class but I like Elizabeth and think Michigan is fine. Not completely my taste but wouldn't really raise an eyebrow. There are lots of more unusual names about and I'd never judge the person for their name, after all it's highly likely that their parents picked it an not them..

I know a highly successful young woman called Alabama.

Marcipex · 17/07/2020 11:32

Sorry but I agree with everyone about Lyricism.
Lyra and Lily are nice middle names.
I quite like Michigan but I would have pronounced it wrongly.
I’m wondering now how to pronounce Chicago.

Giggorata · 17/07/2020 11:35

Michigan is OK, but sounds more masculine to me, especially with the British pronunciation, the hard “ch” sound.
I would put it in the same box as the Georgias, Havanas, Chelseas, etc.

Lyricism is a terrible name to pronounce AND spell.
If you want to reference music, why not Melody, Harmony, Rhapsody, Calypso, Madrigal, Allegra, Cadenza....?

CuppaZa · 17/07/2020 11:37

Oh OP, it’s awful

Apolloanddaphne · 17/07/2020 11:40

I think Michigan would be fine as a middle name but not as a first name. Then for a first name you could choose something linked to music Aria, Allegro, Piper, Harper etc.

InkieNecro · 17/07/2020 11:40

Children are not billboards for your obsessions. You know it's a terrible name or your wouldn't ask.

IndiaPlace · 17/07/2020 11:44

Sadly, I think worse for a girl, as it will be shortened to 'Mich' (pn. Mitch) which is much more a male name.

Elbels · 17/07/2020 11:47

Just call her Slim Shady Keegan

finallychangedmyusername · 17/07/2020 11:47

What about using the initials M I for Michigan and getting a musical link in there?

Melody Iris Keegan, for example

Else Mischa is considered by some to now be a girls name, although it's traditionally a Russian nickname for Michael.

Mischa Lyric Keegan is similar to Michigan.

Or any girls name beginning Mi, with a musical name in the middle perhaps?

Michaela
Mila
Millie
Milicent
Mia

Mia would be MI for Michigan and A for America?

Mia Lyric Keegan

Just some thoughts!

2155User · 17/07/2020 11:51

Well on the basis OP hasn't returned this is quite clearly a joke

SleepingStandingUp · 17/07/2020 11:51

I don't think Michigan I that it there. Paris. India. Florence. Sienna. Brooklyn. Arizona.

Shortened to Micha or Mish.

ELW85 · 17/07/2020 11:53

@BlackCrow

At the London comprehensive school my DC attend, no one would bat an eyelid at Michigan as a name, I can promise you. At least it's a recognisable word with a standard spelling. It does sound a little masculine to my ears though - just my opinion.

I'm not keen on Lyricism as a name mainly because it's a word I struggle with saying without a slight lisp. Lyrica avoids this and also sounds more like a given name. But a middle name is kind of irrelevant as it's not used day to day so do what you want.

May I ask if you yourself are black OP? If you are - as I would have guessed from your name choices and your love of rap - then these names are fine and nothing out of the ordinary. I can see why they might seem extreme choices to the many people on Mumsnet who don't have much / any contact with black communities though.

Are you actually serious?! You must be black if you like rap? And all of the other not even thinly veiled racism in your reply...WTF? Can you piss off back to the 70s with your bizarre attitude and take Nigel Farrage with you.
RedOasis · 17/07/2020 11:55

You’re being really cruel to that child.

2155User · 17/07/2020 11:57

May I ask if you yourself are black OP?

When you ask things like this, you become a big problem in society and it's ability to move forward in its thinking.

Please, educate yourself.

ELW85 · 17/07/2020 12:09

@2155User - far more polite than I was! Seconded.

averythinline · 17/07/2020 12:11

If you like it that much change your name to it...even informally do next time you meet someone new..

they don't rhyme either in how I would say them ....admittedly middle names aren't used much but it's not a name
Am sure you can show your love for the music in another way

DaddyCool60 · 17/07/2020 12:16

Don't do it. If people think it's daft now you need to worry about what they'll think in five, let alone twenty years time.

Just a thought. Would you like to call yourself that name? If so, you could change your name to Michigan Lyricism instead. Might be revealing to see what people would say to you if you did.

DaddyCool60 · 17/07/2020 12:18

sorry @averythinline, you beat me to it. Only saw your post after I'd posted mine. Great minds etc.

timeforabrandnewnameagain · 17/07/2020 13:28

Hmmm the first name it's ok, does sound like a boys name.

The middle name nope it's impossible to say.

PracticalMagic111 · 17/07/2020 13:55

Wow people can be so mean on here!
I can understand people not liking the name and saying that but it doesn't have to be said in such a dreadful way.
I am also shocked at the passive comment of asking someone if they are black because they like rap music and their name choice. Why ask? And what does it matter?

OP, if you like the name go for it :) it clearly means a lot to you and has meaning.
I really like the name Michigan. As others have said perhaps Lyric sounds better as a middle name but you call your baby what you like :)

Sakura7 · 17/07/2020 14:06

Wow people can be so mean on here!

This thread is nothing compared to the meanness the poor child will face if she's saddled with Michigan Lyricism as a name.

iwontfloaatt · 17/07/2020 14:07

All we can do is hope and pray that this thread is a joke... Blush
