First off, I'll say that music plays a huge role in my life, namely rap from the mid-west USA (Michigan) and I really do want a name for my daughter that absolutely nobody else has already thought of. I told my parents earlier and they straight-up laughed in my face Sad but I feel I've got the perfect name.

So, this is what I really want it to be - Michigan Lyricism. I also should say that I love rhyming names and plus they would follow my rap theme. So Michigan Lyricism and our surname is Keegan.

Will people laugh at this?

Not my style but I think it’s OK- but for a boy. I would say Mitch-igan too. I had no idea it was meant to be Mish. No different from Dakota, Indiana, India, etc. And for those saying it doesn’t rhyme, it does. Michigan Keegan. The same three letters at the end.

Disfordarkchocolate · 17/07/2020 14:09

I wouldn't laugh but Michigan is hardly Paris or Rio. I'd be bemused and wondering why you picked it. There are some wonderful names related to music out their that sound far nice as a middle name too.

Scarby9 · 17/07/2020 14:11

I know a family with three children: one boy called Aaron, and two girls called Presley and Gracie. The parents had paid full tribute to their hero, Elvis, but in a relatively subtle way for each child if that wasn't their passion as they grew.

WaxOnFeckOff · 17/07/2020 14:14

Imo, kids only learn that a name is different or unusual because their parents tell them it is or if it makes a funny rhyme or is the same as their neighbours cat or something. so the major influence on whether a child gets teased or not is really the narrow minded parents on here rather than the person choosing something different or children themselves.

I think it's fine to say something isn't your taste or point out things such as that you would assume it's a boy or whatever, but saying it's a joke and that the child's life will be a misery is really something else.

NotMyTimes · 17/07/2020 14:20

If you love this name get a pet and name it Michigan lyricism. Pets can have funny whimsical names. I know a Catniss Everdeen, a dog called Archie archer, another call sir fixalot, the possibilities are endless, just don't saddle a child, a human, with the name.

Dazzedandconfused · 17/07/2020 14:22

😬

YetAnotherSpartacus · 17/07/2020 14:23

No. Just no. Sorry. It's awful.

KyleRappsTheSecond · 17/07/2020 14:32

Ah God, this place.

7 pages of smug old guffbags trying to educate a non-white pleb.

Of course it was a wind-up.

draughtycatflap · 17/07/2020 14:35

I prefer Titicaca.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 17/07/2020 14:35

Are you the OP? What an asinine twat you are if so.

bombcyclone · 17/07/2020 14:41

As a public service announcement made necessary by @BlackCrow's violently idiotic post:

A passion for Midwestern rap and the urge to saddle one's child with a name referencing said passion are indicative of many things, questionable taste and deep narcissism among them.

But race? No.

2bazookas · 17/07/2020 14:44

My aunt called her little princess daughter Mitch . Everyone else called her Mitch the Bitch.

MissJacksonIfYoureNasty · 17/07/2020 14:45

Michigan Keegan isn't the worst I have heard this week. That would be Hagrid.
Nickname Mish (Meesh) for a girl quite nice.
Be prepared for everyone thinking she was conceived there or has American heritage.

BabyLlamaZen · 17/07/2020 14:48

@kylerappsthesecond

Really? 😳

KaptainKaveman · 17/07/2020 14:52

It's awful, frankly. Say it aloud once or twice and you get the full effect of its cringeworthiness. Soz.

SillyUnMurphy · 17/07/2020 15:01

Ok extreme examples but please think of her applying for Oxford or Cambridge (or Harvard, Princeton etc of you are in the US) and later a FTSE 100 Company with a name like that.

DO NOT DO IT!

SillyUnMurphy · 17/07/2020 15:05

@Elbels

Just call her Slim Shady Keegan
Michigan Lyricism: Hi, my name is... Michigan Lyricism

Anyone they may meet: No really, what the fuck is your actual name?

BlackCrow · 17/07/2020 16:50

@bombcyclone - I'm curious that you think that. All I am reflecting on are the names of kids in a very mixed London comp. There are a lot of names used by different ethnic groups which sound odd to ears from other communities but which are perfectly normal within their own. I'm not talking about ethnic names (as in names from their own countries / languages) but common English words and names which aren't often used within white British communities.
How many teenage girls named Pauline, Theresa or Patricia do you know? (these girls are all from an Irish traveller background)
Or 14 year old Kevins, Kenneths or Raymonds? (all boys of east Asian origin).
Or Precious, Prince and Princess? (all children from African families)

I stand by what I'm saying - I don't particularly like it for a little girl, but Michigan would NOT stand out as noteworthy in any way, shape or form where I live. It's just a word. Yes, it would seem more remarkable if she were to find herself in a class full of girls called Sophie, Emily, Olivia and Evie (which she's more likely to do if she grows up in leafy Hampshire or Surrey) but nothing out of the ordinary in a London classroom I can assure you. Where I am, anything goes as far as names are concerned.

JaJaDingDong · 17/07/2020 16:52

It's no worse than Brooklyn I suppose. Which doesn't mean it's good.

2155User · 17/07/2020 17:05

@BlackCrow

I have worked both in a non selective/deprived area in central London in a school and in the middle of no where in the countryside and I can firmly tell you that you are making massive generalisations and I stand by what I said, views like yours hold back society in moving forward.
Your previous post was racist, whether you accept that or not.

SleepingStandingUp · 17/07/2020 17:46

Hi, my name is... Michigan Lyricism But who introduces themselves like that? I would say Hi my name is Olivia Jayne, id say Olivia Smith or just Olivia. If she introduces herself as Michigan Hartley it's only the really sheltered very rude who would fact like you suggest

campion · 17/07/2020 18:18

I can't believe (many) people are still taking this thread seriously!

whereorwhere · 17/07/2020 18:35

I quite like Michigan but with the middle name as well she will hate you 😂

saraclara · 17/07/2020 18:43

She’s not an accessory to your obsession with a niche musical genre

I couldn't say it better. This is YOUR interest, not hers.

I'm going to hope that you're trolling us rather than being that self-centred

I was being flippant and doing a pun on the ‘My Name Is’ song by Eminem. Hence I quoted it Confused
