First off, I'll say that music plays a huge role in my life, namely rap from the mid-west USA (Michigan) and I really do want a name for my daughter that absolutely nobody else has already thought of. I told my parents earlier and they straight-up laughed in my face Sad but I feel I've got the perfect name.

So, this is what I really want it to be - Michigan Lyricism. I also should say that I love rhyming names and plus they would follow my rap theme. So Michigan Lyricism and our surname is Keegan.

Will people laugh at this?

It’s pretty terrible.
She will end up getting called Mich though, so hopefully people will assume her name is Michelle.

I don’t think you should force your love of hip hop onto your child. They’ll be an individual in their own right so give them a proper name and let them be their own person. They might end up not being into music at all.

I know a Dakota, a Montana, a Savannah and a Paris at the London school I work at, plus many, many more unusual non-name names, often spelled in ways that aren't obvious. There are also lots of names of foreign origin which, if I'm being honest, sometimes leave my tongue stumbling until it's been shown the way.
Michigan is a little more masculine and I don't particularly like it for a girl, but I really don't think it's awful. It's just quite urban whereas Mumsnet is the epitome of middle England where everyone's child should be called a white classic name like Isabelle or Oliver. At least Michigan Keegan is clear and easy for anyone to pronounce.
Not keen on Lyricism - it just doesn't feel like a name. Middle names are very unimportant though.... my DD has an unusual (family) name as her middle name which she doesn't like, so she never uses it (or her initial).
Good luck with your little girl and don't be put off by all the hate on here.

Onestepup · 17/07/2020 08:37

Is this serious?

I think not.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/07/2020 08:40

The only way this could be a rhyming name is if you pronounce Michigan as Mitcheegan or Misheegan to rhyme with Keegan, which surely the OP knows is the wrong pronunciation. The stress is always on the first syllable.

But even if it was a valid rhyme, why on earth would you want to saddle your child with a rhyming name? Most people find them comical and would laugh, and not necessarily with her, more at her. That's quite a burden to put on a child, and totally avoidable.

As for Lyricism as a middle name, please don't.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/07/2020 08:42

Hate? Where? I hope you're not mistaking having a different opinion for hate.

Destroyedpeople · 17/07/2020 08:44

These days 'hate' means 'you disagreed with me'.

Destroyedpeople · 17/07/2020 08:44

Coming from a 'teacher' it's worrying. Use of language etc...

Destroyedpeople · 17/07/2020 08:45

Oh wait....could be a dinner lady. Let's hope.

GloriousTechnicolour · 17/07/2020 08:46

People in the UK say 'Mitch-igan'? Really? Confused Having been in the UK for 35 years I've never heard anyone make that mistake.

Anyway OP it's not great, the middle name particularly is horribly try-hard and just not a nice sound.

Sorry. I hope you find your perfect name.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/07/2020 08:46

Which is why we end up with the farcical situation of police officers visiting people who've expressed controversial opinions on social media to threaten them with prosecution for hate crimes, while violent and sexual offences go unprosecuted.

VodselForDinner · 17/07/2020 08:46

I would... look at them just like I look at people abroad when they speak to me in a foreign lingo such as mongolian or urdu

If you’re in a different country and someone speaks the native language, you give them a “look”? Really?

Wyntersdiary · 17/07/2020 09:08

both names are terrible sorry.
I love horses but im not naming my kid Neigh or Hoofs.
I love gaming but im not calling my kid Shooter or Fighter or .. Controller

I'm really sorry but please jsut go for a normal name.. for the sake of your kid and remember you may be musical but that doesnt mean they will be. :(

TwentyViginti · 17/07/2020 09:35

So I could have named my DD for my musical interests? So.....

DD born 1970s - Heavy Metal.

I'll ask how she feels about that (she's not a fan of HM music).

BackforGood · 17/07/2020 09:45

Well, it's not a word I walk around saying on a regular basis, nor hearing other people talk about, but, I would have said 'Mitch' rather than 'Mish'. To me 'Mich' looks like 'rich' , and therefore I assumed it rhymed with rich, rather than rhyming with 'dish'

flooredbored · 17/07/2020 10:05

Michigan is not to my taste, but I don't think it is totally ridiculous. There are lots of place name names about. Lyricism I think sounds quite odd (it also doesn't rhyme with Michigan) Lyrica would be preferable.

GladAllOver · 17/07/2020 10:09

Poor kid.

GardenOfRaman · 17/07/2020 10:11

This is a pisstake, right?

WaxOnFeckOff · 17/07/2020 10:11

Hmm, I don't mind a name that's a bit different but if you are going for an unusual first name then it's better to have a less unusual middle so they can use that if preferred.

Lyra Michigan Keegan?
or
Michigan Lyra Keegan if you must.

GardenOfRaman · 17/07/2020 10:13

@Wyntersdiary Neigh and Hoofs 😂 thanks for the giggle!

I like sewing so maybe Thread, or Bobbin?

BabyLlamaZen · 17/07/2020 10:16

Michigan is fine :) might be a head turn but nothing people won't get used to. I've known a few Angel's, Princesses (yes really) and lots of other place names. People can be a bit judgemental, but that's ok. You might be asked if you have any actual links to America.

Kids dont tell to like unusual name but are often less fussed when older.

Question is are you ok with people's reactions?

BabyLlamaZen · 17/07/2020 10:17

Ooh also like Lyrica vs Lyricism

BabyLlamaZen · 17/07/2020 10:18

@IzzyIslington in a nutshell.

Mumsnet is very white little England. A favourite here is a girl's name Elizabeth, so you can see the reaction!

NataliaOsipova · 17/07/2020 10:20

Please remember this is a child you are naming. Who will become a teenager and then an adult. And will have to use that name - in a range of contexts - for the rest of her life. That name will mark her out as “oddball” from the word go. She may be happy with that....but equally she may not. I would strongly advise you to choose something else.

GinWithRosie · 17/07/2020 10:21

I'm aghast 🤦‍♀️

That's all 🤷‍♀️

kenandbarbie · 17/07/2020 10:31

Your baby is unique and special. She doesn't need a name to do that. Let her shine herself. Most artists with unusual names adopted these as an adult to reflect their own personal creativity and the image they wanted to project.
