Please please say I can have Clementine

Hi MNers

A few years ago I posted asking whether I should name my baby Clementine. The answers were a resounding no.
I'm now back again, because I clearly can't take a hint.
So...our surname is Harrowdyne. Can I use Clementine (ending 'tyne' ) or am I once again deluding myself?
Feel free to hand me a grip if I need it.
Thanks!!

It's beautiful OP. Do it.
I know a Cassandra Miranda, (surname is Miranda), love the rhythm of her name. Your choice is similar.

ChinWhiskers · 30/06/2020 03:17

It's nice. I too think of death row when i hear clemancy

FinlandFlag · 30/06/2020 03:58

I would have said no before.

But crazy pandemic. Life too short yadayada

Call her what the hell you like and it will be a thing. You'll make it work. She will just own the name and that's that. Star

Whatsyourflava · 30/06/2020 10:12

Clementine is one of my favourite names too. It's fine with your surname- so what if it semi rhymes?! - please use it! I think you'll regret it if you don't

LetsHearItForTheBuoy · 30/06/2020 10:16

I think it's lovely! Has a nice flow-y ring to it! Clem also sounds nice if she decides when she's older to use it

Ellmau · 30/06/2020 10:36

Clementine is a lovely name, but not with your surname, sorry. Clementina pronounced eena would be OK.

Clemency would be lovely.

IdentifyasTired · 30/06/2020 10:49

A mixed bag of replies, maybe leaning more towards yes than no.
D'you know what though? I'm a bit of a cop out and I suspect if/when the time came I wouldn't go through with it.
Clemen-teen is also really nice and solves the rhyming issue. I don't love it as I do Clemen-tyne but it would avoid any awkwardness.
Sigh. I've loved all your responses. Thanks

I also want to use Clementine and have quickly realised that everyone will say it their own way anyway, tyne or teen! I've heard people say it's a brave choice but I don't understand why, I think it's beautiful!

MondeoFan · 30/06/2020 10:56

I'd just go with it tbh, if I loved a name that much then nothing would put me off. Does it go with the surname? No.......but did Magnus magnusson or Edward Woodward?

MonetManet · 30/06/2020 11:22

I never comment on threads, but honestly I love the name combination. Please don’t think that you can’t go through with it. It’s a gorgeous name that you love and as others have said, it sounds like a heroine's name. It sounds strong, yet sweet.
Congrats on your 5th baby OP, I hope you’re happy with whatever name you choose, but please don’t feel like you can’t use Clementine, it’s lovely.

PeaPodPad · 30/06/2020 12:03

I have a Clementine, nick name Clemmie. Pronounced teeeen, rather than tyne as that's how Clementine Churchill pronounced it herself. And in my opinion, Clemen-tyne is too American sounding.

Nobody has ever sung the song at her, called her a fruit, or had any of those associations made about it someone posted above 🙄

She goes to a very large school where "posh" names are the norm, and there's one other girl there called Clementine, also pronounced the same way. It's uncommon but not rare.

I'd say go for it! Pick unusual middle names too (I did), and embrace it. But pronounce it the English way 😁 The way people pronounce the Clementine Churchill hospital bugs me as there is no way that wonderful woman was known that way. She was a Clemen-teen.

raindrop83 · 30/06/2020 12:11

@PeaPodPad Can I ask what middle name you went for, I'm serving for one myself to go with Clementine!

BlackCatsRule88 · 30/06/2020 12:14

I like it!

LotusClover · 30/06/2020 12:18

It's a no from me. I dislike the name Clementine as it is, but it sounds ridiculous with your surname and will definitely get made fun of. Even if it's pronounced "clemen-teen", it's still a bit much. As a middle name it could just about work, but as a first name, definitely not.

IdentifyasTired · 30/06/2020 12:57

It's looking like this is a real marmite name. Some love it. Some loathe it. Very few in the middle.
Hmm...definitely going to need to revisit this thread down the line!

Your 4 girls’ names are gorgeous

BlueJeanBabeh · 30/06/2020 19:09

@GrapefruitGin what are the other names? Love this thread and Clementine Harrodine 😍❤️

winetime89 · 30/06/2020 19:15

I really like it op. It flows together well

Hiero · 30/06/2020 21:46

@IdentifyasTired would love to know what your boy's name?! Smile

Ostanovka · 30/06/2020 22:00

Love Clementine! Clem Harrow sounds amazing, keep the first name and change your family name! Wink

Heytheredelilah99 · 30/06/2020 22:03

Yes yes yes!! love the name Clementine, I like the French pronounciation.

Mrsmchammer · 01/07/2020 10:07

I am very much a Catherine, Mary, Helen type person but this is hands down my favourite name that has been up for discussion on this board. It really is lovely, and if you love it go for it. Even as a middle name.

IdentifyasTired · 01/07/2020 14:02

BlueJeanBabeh
My other girls are called Martha, Rose, Evelyn and Marianne.
My boys name is Alexander. Far less controversial than Clementine!
Thank you for all the lovely comments. This thread has been lovely to read!!
