Please please say I can have Clementine

Hi MNers

A few years ago I posted asking whether I should name my baby Clementine. The answers were a resounding no.
I'm now back again, because I clearly can't take a hint.
So...our surname is Harrowdyne. Can I use Clementine (ending 'tyne' ) or am I once again deluding myself?
Feel free to hand me a grip if I need it.
Thanks!!

Actually I think I would raise an eyebrow and snigger at "Clementine Harrowdyne", as would many other parents. Some rhyming names you can get away with but "Clementine" and "Harrowdyne" not only rhyme, they also have the same flow and same number of syllables. Aside from anything else, it's long, fussy and very pretentious-sounding to me.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 02/07/2020 10:48

People might raise an eyebrow and snigger at the idea on a MN thread but I'd like to think that no-one would be so shitty as to react in that way to a real-life child.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 02/07/2020 10:50

So many threads where posters worry that their kid will be bullied for their name. Kids don't give a toss. It's the parents you have to worry about.

BinkyBoinky · 02/07/2020 10:54

Not sure Clemen-tyne Harrowdyne goes, but Clemen-teen Harrowdyne could work, though still quite a mouthful.

Dillydallyingthrough · 02/07/2020 10:59

I really like it (clearly no taste looking at the previous comments Smile). Go for it OP!

JesmondDene · 02/07/2020 11:00

What about Celine, a name I discovered when researching my family tree.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 02/07/2020 11:05

With a name like that she could be anything - film star, High Court judge, author, artist. It's not a name she could grow out of as she gets older. I think it is perfect with your surname - and I say that someone who generally would avoid rhyming names.

Oh wow this is the best name ever! I’m biased as my second favourite girls’ name ever has always been Clementine. My first is Matilda, we called our first DD that, and had our second DD in February. I couldn’t convince DH to call her Clementine so we settled on Cleo, which is equally beautiful and suits her to a tee but my heart still ever so slightly wishes I’d put Clementine on her birth certificate. Please go for it OP! Do it for me 😂

I think it is totally different to Clemency and so much prettier, it’s like the difference between Laura and Lara.

MotheringShites · 02/07/2020 11:15

I love it!

JollyGiraffe12 · 02/07/2020 11:19

I actually think it sounds like a wonderful character from a book I really love it! Some might consider it pretentious, I see where they would be coming from but for me it just sounds lovely. There are worse things in life than being considered a smidge pretentious anyway. Plus Clemmie is adorable and doesn’t have the same rhyming issue.

carorganiser1 · 02/07/2020 11:32

Go for it OP!

micc · 03/07/2020 18:43

I have a daughter called Clementine, me and my boyfriend think the name.sounds awesome with your last name! Go for it!

TeddyBeans · 03/07/2020 19:20

Use it OP! Apply for a family deed poll to change everyone's surname to Harrow and you're laughing Grin

Josette77 · 03/07/2020 19:24

Use it!! It's one of my favourite names. I think it sounds magical with your surname. Like a faerie, or a modern witch.

alexdgr8 · 03/07/2020 19:44

change the surname.
if you think it doesn't go.
clementine is a lovely name. mrs winston churchill.
go for it.
good luck.

@IdentifyasTired then I’d say just go for it? It sounds like you really, really love it. You’re not being shallow, I get it, but obviously you’re going to get a mixed bag of opinions with a name that’s not completely run of the mill (which I’d personally take as a compliment) ... also, as others pps have said, once the baby is here it’s an entirely different ball game. It sounds like nothing else will do op so I’d go with what you love and I agree with others about it having a literary appeal (in an elegant way, not a caricature way)... so if I were you I wouldn’t let it be the one that got away because it sounds like you’ll regret it. It’s pretty, not burdensome. And if anyone actually has the audacity to snigger to yours or the child’s face (which they’ve no reason to), they don’t belong in your life.

IdentifyasTired · 05/07/2020 18:19

There are so many opposing views on here. But then maybe that’s just life? You can’t please all the people all the time.
Someone up thread said it sounds pretentious. Which I definitely don’t want. We’re a very ordinary family if a little quirky in some ways. But then so many others love it. I ran past a friend in real life today who liked it a lot.
Pah. Wish I’d enabled voting now. Though what difference would it make? I think I’d still be conflicted!
Maybe we could just move to somewhere where quirky names are quite common and then the problem is solved!

If you love it, that's really all that matters. Others opinions really aren't important. It's a beautiful name and you love it that's what matters.

Thanks MrsKingfisher Smile

It's obviously a name you love, I agree and think it's beautiful. I would go for it. X

Stillamum3 · 12/07/2020 02:55

What about Dorcas Harrowdyne - I think that sounds lovely!

longtimecomin · 12/07/2020 08:59

It's a standout name, go for it!

whenwillthemadnessend · 12/07/2020 09:03

I like it

sunrainwind · 12/07/2020 09:04

I don't mind the name particularly but I don't like the rhyming. If I were your friend in real life I'd tell you I loved it as I'd never criticise a name to a friend.

Saying that, I'd go with it if you're totally comfortable and wouldn't feel at all awkward saying her whole name. My sister gave her child a lovely name but, with the surname, it's the same name as someone famous and she regrets it a bit as feels a bit strange saying it out loud to strangers - even 12 year on!

SoupDragon · 12/07/2020 09:06

I grew up with a rhyming name. It was utterly, utterly shit.
