Judged for my kids' names?!

Hi fellow mums! I'm new to the site, not too sure how it all works LOL
I have always been a massive Oasis fan (sorry Blur fans) and they have influenced me and inspired me throughout my entire life, so when i found out i was having two little twin boys, i thought it would be amazing to name them after the Gallagher brothers! I thought it was a sweet idea, but people seem to frown and laugh thinking it's a joke!! Have to say it does hurt a bit. All the best, Catherine xx

r least you didn’t accidentally give your children rhyming names. I only realised years later. Apparent friends/family thought it was intentional and have been secretly judging us all this time. Arseholes!

Jeeperscreepers69 · 30/04/2020 17:41

I adore dolly parton and james arthur but i wouldnt name children after my them. Are you just a young mam? Like 16/17?

Jimdandy · 30/04/2020 17:41

Liam is really William

TabBon · 30/04/2020 17:44

Love those names!!
I called my twins the first and surname of a famous person! I didn’t even make the connection, just liked the names!
It has been pointed out to me a few times. I find it funny 😂

ittakes2 · 30/04/2020 17:46

I don’t think the word sweet is usually associated with the Gallagher brothers so maybe that is why sweet is not what people first think of.

Scotland32 · 30/04/2020 17:47

Assume you actually are joking? Please do not do that to them.

winniestone37 · 30/04/2020 17:49

One thing I learned when talking baby names is that everyone has an opinion as to why the names you love are shit. When in reality they don’t really care. Don’t ask other people what they think, why does it matter?! They’re nice names, trust yourself and enjoy your boys.

Poodles03 · 30/04/2020 17:49

Of course you'll be judged for your kids names. Where does the '?!' come into it. Everyone judges everyone on everything. It's crap but it's the way of the world.

And yes, it would make a bit of a laughing stock out of your boys by calling them Liam and Noel. Do you really want to deal with people saying 'Noel and Liam, as in Oasis?' and humming Wonderwall for the rest of your life?

Harls1969 · 30/04/2020 17:50

You're perfectly entitled to name your children as you wish. Liam and Noel are lovely names. It could be so much worse - Benson and Hedges for example. You're very brave posting on here by the way Grin

winniestone37 · 30/04/2020 17:51

And the nasty, patronising comments on here are shameful ‘are you just a young man’ ‘please don’t do that to them’ . You ridiculous, vile, and nasty witches.

Poodles03 · 30/04/2020 17:53

Benson and Hedges.

HAHAHAHAHAHA.

hellosunshine5 · 30/04/2020 17:55

It could be so much worse - Benson and Hedges for example.

Brilliant - I really hope you’re referring to a real life example there Grin

MyWitzEnd · 30/04/2020 18:01

Call them noel and liam and nobody will notice

ProfessionalWeirdo · 30/04/2020 18:05

I used to work with someone whose children were called Max and Rebecca. It turned out that his wife had named them after the main characters in the Daphne du Maurier novel.

Some friends of ours invented what they call "The Tesco Test". Before naming your child, you have to imagine how it will sound when you have to yell the name at full volume when your toddler runs away from you in the middle of the supermarket. Our friends have direct experience of this; they witnessed the sight of a harrassed young father chasing his son through Tesco and shouting "Tyrone! Come back here!"

Chiyo666 · 30/04/2020 18:07

What’s wrong with Tyrone? Confused

binkyboinky · 30/04/2020 18:15

I judge. Not because the names aren't nice individually but because you gave them 'novelty' style names. Like Bert & Ernie (on Eastenders - I know, fictional!) and the aforementioned Ronnie & Reggie. People DO do this, including silly rhyming names they wouldn't give to a regular pair of siblings. Just name them individually, like other kids. They're not hamsters!

People forget that twins are individuals and treat them as a unit, like they're one person, or a joke.

Can you tell I'm a disgruntled twin?!

MadMadaMim · 30/04/2020 18:28

There's no accounting for [bad] taste Wink OP!

People will always have an opinion on names - it's what first defines us. The public personas of both Liam and Noel are fairly negative - crass, loutish, confrontational, egotistical. This is what most people will think, reactively rather than consciously, when they hear you say their names together.

That said - why care? If you like them then you're OK. And anyway - it's too late to do anything about it!!

Personally, I wouldn't be horrible to you, however I would be thinking 'what possessed someone to inflict that on their children!?!'. And as other posters have said, I also feel sorry for the boys. Hopefully, by the time it matters, Oasis will be even more forgotten than they are now. Flash in the pan bands like that are rarely remembered beyond the generation in which they flashed GrinWinkWink

Poodles03 · 30/04/2020 18:30

^ Very well said.

MadMadaMim · 30/04/2020 18:30

I agree - what's wrong with Tyrone???

MadMadaMim · 30/04/2020 18:32

I know someone who had two dogs called Benson and Hedges!

MadMadaMim · 30/04/2020 18:38

PS I wanted to call my daughter Sofia-Lauren and the only reason we didn't is because our really close friends called fbiwe daughter Sophie.

I then had two lovely Japanese names and family were horrified

Eventual name we went with sounds quite similar to a 'brand' (luckily not British so not everyone knows it) and I have been asked if she's named after it (she's not). Someone will ALWAYS have an opinion.

MummyofTw0 · 30/04/2020 18:57

I think maybe possibly are laughing because Liam and Noel hate each other so to name them after warring siblings is a little out there

ThisMumisaMan · 30/04/2020 18:59

Ignore people's comments and call them what YOU want. If anyone criticises, ask them how they picked their kids names, you'll often find they're really boring or being hypocrites. We named our kids after a fictional spy, an Avenger and the theme tune to a popular motoring program, anyone is free to criticise, but at least the names mean something to my wife and I.

Poodles03 · 30/04/2020 19:19

^ Jessica?

That's hardly 'out there', is it. Not comparable.

Yerroblemom1923 · 30/04/2020 19:25

Could be so much worse. You could've called them Jayden and Kayden etc
