Hi fellow mums! I'm new to the site, not too sure how it all works LOL
I have always been a massive Oasis fan (sorry Blur fans) and they have influenced me and inspired me throughout my entire life, so when i found out i was having two little twin boys, i thought it would be amazing to name them after the Gallagher brothers! I thought it was a sweet idea, but people seem to frown and laugh thinking it's a joke!! Have to say it does hurt a bit. All the best, Catherine xx

Toddlers now Blush I think they should've been middle names but DD loved the idea of forenames too Grin

Just ignore. I have two boys and their (perfectly normal) names both feature in a popular long running children's cartoon, along with a dozen other names. We were asked many times after the birth of DS2 if we'd name the next one after another character. Another mum locally had two boys a similar age to mine and had named hers two other of the characters names. She used to get the same comments. They're 9 and 7 now and no-one has made the association for years.

People think they're funny. Just give them the Paddington stare and invoke that Mumsnet classic 'did you mean to be so rude?'. Your children's peers won't make the association as they'll be too young.

@Chiyo666 Noelle is such a pretty name xx

I used to know twins Chanel and Dior.

HughGrantFan28 · 29/04/2020 17:28

Aw bless!
A few of my friends' kids make the association as they're into that music but they think it's amazing Grin all the best xx

I went to school with a Kylie and Dani (sisters). Took me 15 years to twig.

bigMummycuddles · 29/04/2020 17:28

I think Mums/parents should be able to call their kids whatever they want to. As (from what i gather from your post) that you like the band and people dont know that maybe the band and their songs have helped you get through something. And even if its not that deep then they are still lovely names and pretty mainstream names. After all they are your children and you should be able to name them whatever you want.

HughGrantFan28 · 29/04/2020 17:29

My mum would be a fan of those names Grin

Well it’s a bit cringe isn’t it?

Like those people who love cars and call their daughter Mercedes or if you’re a big Chelsea fan and use that as a baby name. It’s using your kids to declare what your hobby or interest is instead of a name of their own.

stiffchain · 29/04/2020 17:30

Lovely names.
Maybe it's an urban myth, but I once heard of Glasgow twins that went by the name of Armani and Versace McClatchy!

HughGrantFan28 · 29/04/2020 17:30

Aw thank you! Nice to see someone nice about it

I wouldn't link it to Oasis if you told me those names.
Wouldn't choose them personally but they aren't hideous.
I had two cats who were brothers and called them Ronnie & Reggie. Ronnie acted like Ronnie too Grin

peperethecat · 29/04/2020 17:31

Eh... to be honest it could be a lot worse. Kids their age probably won't even know who Oasis are. And when they get older they won't always go round as a twosome.

Rather Liam and Noel any day than two unrelated but dreadful names.

pallasathena · 29/04/2020 17:31

Awful idea.
Why name a child for a so called 'celebrity'? And 'celebrities', who've nothing to recommend them except getting rich on the back of a bit of warbling at the masses and then spectacularly falling out with each other.
It's bizarre OP. And with respect...childish.
Find some strong, characterful, names for your twins.
How about Owen and Oliver? Or Finn and Freddie? you need names for them...not names because once upon a time you fancied a boy band...

TheSkyWasDark · 29/04/2020 17:32

I think it's a bit cringe to name your children after any cultural phenomenon really but I wouldn't judge per se.

HughGrantFan28 · 29/04/2020 17:32

I get your point, but I personally think naming your kid after a car or brand etc is a bit different to something that has influenced your entire life, I wouldn't be here without Oasis so I think it's a bit different than a material item x

But the real question is, if you have another son will he be called Hugh?

ScreamingKid · 29/04/2020 17:33

I wouldn't automatically make the link. They're nice normal names.

Bertucci · 29/04/2020 17:34

If you’re serious, not surprised people laugh.

Hope they’re better looking than their namesakes.

Take it in your stride op

Orphlids · 29/04/2020 17:36

I think if you’re going to pick these names, intentionally, after famous brothers, you have to do it with a bit of a sense of humour. And you’ll have to develop a bit of a thicker skin. I don’t think the names are bad. Personally, I really like it when a parent’s passion is reflected in their children’s names. I find it interesting, and sometimes amusing, assuming the parents don’t take themselves too seriously. But you’ll have to accept others may have the polar opposite in musical taste and will be a bit snotty - as you’ve already seen in the comments here. But in real life, people won’t be so rude to your face, so don’t worry.

Like PP, I also know of twins named Ronnie and Reggie, and I’m afraid I cannot think of a single positive thing to say about that. Your choices certainly won’t raise as many eyebrows as that.

If those names bring you joy, go for it.

MinorArcana · 29/04/2020 17:38

I think that individually, Liam and Noel are perfectly fine names.

But together, yes, they do make me think of Oasis. I do think it’s inevitable that some people will remark on it.

All you can do is ignore it. And kids their age are unlikely to pick up on it.

Devlesko · 29/04/2020 17:39

Ignore them. Choose what you like.
Anyway, with two little boys, it's not like you chose Rolf and Harris.

My family have all turned into right Royal wannabees, if you knew all the names and kids names, none of it done intentionally, some born before the actual Royal was born, but it's infuriating the amount of people who comment.
Ironically, none of us even like TRF, nor do we follow them, or interested in any way Grin

HughGrantFan28 · 29/04/2020 17:40

@shazattack Shaz may I ask if you're a blur fan Grin Only having a laugh. Think it's a bit brutal to say you feel so sorry for my kids? I'd feel a little embarrassed if my mum was so judgemental!
