Judged for my kids' names?!

Hi fellow mums! I'm new to the site, not too sure how it all works LOL
I have always been a massive Oasis fan (sorry Blur fans) and they have influenced me and inspired me throughout my entire life, so when i found out i was having two little twin boys, i thought it would be amazing to name them after the Gallagher brothers! I thought it was a sweet idea, but people seem to frown and laugh thinking it's a joke!! Have to say it does hurt a bit. All the best, Catherine xx

I expected it as a little joke????

You used your children’s lifelong names as a joke????

Beyond words, not exactly role models either. Such poor taste to name your children after pop singers, poor kids they may hate oasis music.

I have a dog called Bob and wanted to call his brother Marley. My ex husband talked me out of it, and I'm kind of glad he did now and could not imagine calling my kids after my favourite singers. Bit childish, but at least the names aren't too outlandish I suppose.

yellowribbon12 · 30/04/2020 19:57

I have brothers called Noel and Liam, we are also of Irish heritage, and they are 58 and 56!! So they are the original brothers!

Usernamerequired · 30/04/2020 20:00

Great band, very important to mine and my families lives. Honestly Liam and Noel are fantastic Irish names. If you have a third boy Paul is also a brilliant saint’s name, honestly living in Ireland they are amongst the most popular boys names. Hold your head up high and make sure they wear Man City blue on a regular basis 😊💙

Aglet · 30/04/2020 20:05

You could always pretend you don't know who Oasis are if anyone mentions it.

ScrambledEggForBrains · 30/04/2020 20:09

My friend named her sons Ross and Ben (big Friends fan)

ScrambledEggForBrains · 30/04/2020 20:10

Oh and my DH is called Noel 👍

pollymere · 30/04/2020 20:15

You might get people assuming an Irish link somewhere. DD has a Ukrainian name so people assume I'm Eastern European, not that I just liked the name (and my Dad suddenly announcing he hated the Irish version of her name!). If you're happy to explain that, go for it.

LovelyIssues · 30/04/2020 20:17

Liam and Noel are lovely names and Oasis are amazing so Wink I'm very impressed. I wouldn't laugh

Florawest · 30/04/2020 20:22

Lovely names,
just say well I love the names and the band and sure that's the main thing, don't sweat the small things in life and be content with your decisions.

glennamy · 30/04/2020 20:29

It is funny, get over it but if you like the names then do it... Trust me every year teachers look at the new intake of kids and their names, lots of rolling of eyes and deep breaths are taken as they mostly know which kids are going to be the precious little things and to be the problems! They are not wrong!

Helen1990 · 30/04/2020 20:53

I called my daughter reeva and her name actually came about as I was watching the oscar Pistorius trial at the time and I fell in love with the name

bellocchild · 30/04/2020 21:45

I once taught a girl called Tia Maria. She didn't seem bothered...

BlueGreenYellowRed · 30/04/2020 21:47

I once taught a girl called Tia Maria

I went to school with a girl called Bacardi Grin

Lordfrontpaw · 30/04/2020 21:55

I knew a woman at work who named her baby Cara Mia...

LavenderLilacTree · 30/04/2020 22:00

Avoid any matchy matchy names for twins as it's naff.
Twins need their own individual names - not always to be know as the twins or always be one half of something. Give them their own individual identity. Never dress them the same - that's double naff.
See all the research from TAMBA/Twins Trust as to why this is so important.
(I am a mother of twins).

cherish123 · 30/04/2020 23:19

I once knew two children who were called Ronnie and Reggie 🙄🤔. Who calls their children that? Liam and Noel seem quite normal by comparison.

ThisMumisaMan · 01/05/2020 01:41

Poodles03

That's my point, many people call their kids after things that mean something to them, just you wouldn't know it. If anyone criticises you'll often find they did something similar with previous relatives names when deciding what to call their kids, is that really any different to naming your kids after rock stars, if those rock stars mean something to you?

theschoolonthehill · 01/05/2020 02:13

Oh interesting. How do they mostly know? I think names like Hugo and Milo are now ordinary names when once they were aspirational? Names like Evie and Ruby are ten a penny. Apart from obvious Disney princess Aurora type names, how do they interpret names?

eaglejulesk · 01/05/2020 04:15

For goodness sake - if someone told me their sons were called Noel and Liam I wouldn't bat an eyelid. I would pick up the Oasis connection, but wouldn't necessarily think that the boys had been named after the Gallaghers. They are both perfectly sensible names, and plenty of people call their children after musicians. Ignore the nasty people on this thread OP, it seems some of them have nothing better to do than try and put other people down.

KatherineJaneway · 01/05/2020 05:14

Not as bad as the woman who called her twins Kylie and Charlene.

debrasmith · 01/05/2020 05:29

That's so disrespectful. At least you named them after members of a great band unlike people who name their children after bands such as The Beatles

Debra

CHARLonodn90 · 01/05/2020 06:21

@pallasathena You sound utterly terrifying and way harsh. HER reality is that the band and their songs carry significance and, as she said, helped her throughout her years.

Isn’t it supposed to be children who judge and make fun of names as they don’t yet know any better? Luckily their peers won’t have the foggiest.

OP you absolutely don’t have to give an explanation for this to anybody or explain any of your life choices. You could’ve called them Pear and Plum, Just don’t give a flying..,

samandpoppysmummy · 01/05/2020 06:30

They are both very nice names and as your boys get older, less people will make the connection.

I had no idea there was a series of Usborne children's books about siblings called Poppy and Sam until I took my two to toddler group for the first time and all the mums there thought that's where I'd got their names from Grin

Bubbletrouble43 · 01/05/2020 07:28

What about Liam and Leon?
