We had decided on Rufus Caspar.

It was perfect.

We knew no other child with the name,it creates the NN Ru which I adore (can't use rupert or Reuben either),it's not popular but not unknown,it has no terrible associations,it goes brilliantly with our other DC names, and it's cool dammit.

But now a sort-of-relative-family-friend has used it for her PFB,and it will look like we've copied and I know it's childish but I do care about that for some reason.

It's taken me months to settle on a name and now I have to start all over again

It's Not Fair!

HELP ME

Have you thought about Rohan?

HaroldLloyd · 06/10/2013 22:10

Love rudy.

I'd use it! USE IT! Grin

ChouetteMouette · 06/10/2013 22:26

Reuel?

TheCharWoman · 06/10/2013 23:00

I love Rufus Caspar so much that I've added the name to my list, the whole combo.

Does that make you feel better or worse OP?!

UpTheFRIGGinDuff · 06/10/2013 23:24

In really not sure Char I'm really not sure...

That's crap. Poor you! I love Rufus but have no sons! I've never heard of it being shortened to Ru, though, so maybe you can console yourself with the fact he'd get called Ruf / Rufy!

longjane · 06/10/2013 23:45

Raphael or rafael

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 06/10/2013 23:58

My DS2 is called Caspar Ruaridh. DP and I are both Scottish and had decided on the name before we went to register it (obviously) DP was still shocked after I wrote it down for them and actually asked what it said!

Just use the name anyway, Rufus is pretty awesome.

AgadorSpartacus · 07/10/2013 00:14

Personally I'd stick to your guns with Rufus Caspar. I like it and after all your sodding agonising ... Grin

I want to throw in my DSs name Rohan. He is known to many as Ro. I'm biased but I love it.

Ooh a double post. I've never done one of them before.

Odd.

sleepingbeautiful · 07/10/2013 06:46

Romulus? That could work with Ru as nn.

I know two toddlers named Rufus, both apparently picked because parents liked Felix but felt it was getting too popular. I wonder if Rufus will be the same with that demographic. Oh and one of them (my Dad's business partner's kid) currently has the nn Roofie, so guess no one in their family has clicked on how inappropriate!!

TeWiSavesTheDay · 07/10/2013 06:57

Or Remus...

MrsSlocombesPussy · 07/10/2013 07:38

Use it. My cousin gave his DD the exact same name as mine, and then one of his twin sons was given the same name as my DS. both my Dcs were born before his. I admit it did mildly irritate me at first, but now, I couldn't care less. It's not as if the have the same surname too.
I just think that he happens to have the same taste as me. I'm pretty sure he does actually as his other twin son was given our 2nd choice of boys name, which he had no way of knowing.

Anri · 07/10/2013 07:46

I like Asa a lot. Have you thought about Ezra?

What about Cyrus?

It's a stretch, but Roo could work as a nickname for Bruno or Rollo.

TheCharWoman · 07/10/2013 09:26

That's really weird sleepingbeautiful because DS1 is Felix!

OP, how would you feel next year if you met someone with a baby Rufus? Would you feel sad if your baby DS had a different name? If so, then do stick to your guns!

looki · 07/10/2013 09:28

Ah I feel sorry for you. What an unlucky coincidence. I wouldn't like to use the same name either. What about Ruairi (Irish for Rory?)

Chacha23 · 07/10/2013 11:30

but doesn't Rufus mean "red-haired"? isn't it a bit strange, if you son doesn't turn out to have red hair?

anyway, sorry, I realize you're not asking for opinions - surely for a matter like that, it'd be ok to go see the parents and explain to them that you had already picked the name and that it's a stupid coincidence. Even if you don't know them all that well.

squoosh · 07/10/2013 13:24

I wouldn't use it, as nonsensical as it is, knowing someone in my circle had got there before me would take a lot of the sheen from the name for me. Also I'd hate for anyone to think I was copying them.

I love Bram and Ivo as suggested above. I also like Hallam (Hal).

UpTheFRIGGinDuff · 07/10/2013 13:29

I can't really use Ivo as we have an Arlo...I'm not loving any of the other 'Ru' names...

This sucks Sad

OP posts:
squoosh · 07/10/2013 13:35

Ruslan
Rumi
Bruno
Cyrus
Bruce

Admittedly some of the 'Ru' links are a bit tenuous with those.

I will add that 5 poor little sods were registered as Rooney last year.

UpTheFRIGGinDuff · 07/10/2013 13:42

Those poor kids Confused

I do rather like Rumi though...too much like Roomy?!

squoosh · 07/10/2013 13:43

Brutus!

He'd be a big tough baby.

Artandco · 07/10/2013 13:49

What about caspian?

squoosh · 07/10/2013 13:51

Rubea
Rudolofo
Rutherford
Rubio
Rudyard
Rudiger
Rulan
Ruskin
