We had decided on Rufus Caspar.

It was perfect.

We knew no other child with the name,it creates the NN Ru which I adore (can't use rupert or Reuben either),it's not popular but not unknown,it has no terrible associations,it goes brilliantly with our other DC names, and it's cool dammit.

But now a sort-of-relative-family-friend has used it for her PFB,and it will look like we've copied and I know it's childish but I do care about that for some reason.

It's taken me months to settle on a name and now I have to start all over again

It's Not Fair!

HELP ME

Raphael is a bit too biblical for us...and waaaaaay to long for our sir name.

I do love the NN Raffy though.

Rooney?

No, go back to Rufus.

I understand why you feel how you feel OP. I remember our first choice girl's name being taken out in a similar circumstance. It's not as bad if you've picked a top 50 name as people expect to meet several little "Xs".

How about:
Coen
Boyd
Roman
Jed
Cornelius
Asher
Darius
Lennox
Selwyn
Eric
Linden/Lyndon
Ramsey
Reid

Just use what you have chosen.

Honestly even if they were close friends and relatives it wouldnt matter. Trust me, my lifelong best friend was given my name and she was born a few months after me. We are cousins and her parents had set their heart on the name I was given.

Raoul?

Doesn't really give you a Ru but has similar sounding vowels grasping straws

No way I'd want to use the name either. It's NOT just your hormones!

Or use Casper as a fn? You could call him Caz, I think that's kinda cool... Cooler than Rufus really...

What about Rui/Ruy? Portuguese I believe...

Is it Pronounced Roo-ee?

Sort of. It's more blended/ faster than English people would say it. Definitely NOT Roo-wee. You'd say the Ru like 'put' and then 'ee'

You sound like the type of person who would like Barnabas or Barnaby with Barney as nickname.

I would say Ru-ee, but I do have the type of accent which elongates vowel sounds. I think merrymarigold's pronunciation is correct.

Several years ago, my uber-trendy, work-in-media types acquaintances were using Rufus. Now it's filtered into the mainstream. Soon it will be bloody everywhere. Like Noah. Every boy I meet is either Noah or has a brother called Noah.

What about Cassius?

UpTheFRIGGinDuff · 08/10/2013 18:56

She is an über-trendy-works-in-the-media-type... I think that's why I'm so concerned about it looking like I'm copying Hmm

Gawd I'm pathetic.

DP doesn't like Cassius.

It is really, really tricky to find a name we both love.

Awww, are you not over it yet?

How about Bruno? The "Ru" is quite strong in that...

Rasmus?

I would still use it tbh. Honestly. It's not that uncommon a name. If anyone mentions it say 'oh really? Well, I've always wanted 3 children called X, X and X so she must have really good taste!'

Plus you said she's a sort of friend, chances are you'll hardly ever bump into one another.

Ruaridh (pn like brewery but without the B) gives the nn Roo. Also a lovely name.

That's a brilliant way of explaining the pronunciation!

I do love it,but the only Irish connection I can rustle up is my dads mother...we live in the south of England...

Skye,Arlo and Ruaridh
I'm not sure it 'sits' as easily next to the others.

I know Bunda I know! It's so fucking UnFair.

I do like Rafferty a lot (despite my usual dislike of surname names) and I love Raffy... DP likes it too...

It's long though, too long really, for our surname.

Call him Ru as you announce it to extended family. To others you can call him the full name of nickname.

If you love the name then you should definitely use it or you will regret it. A name is just a name and I doubt they or anyone else will care if you have the same one. The babies have their own personalities and aren't defined by a name.

I love it btw
