OK, final name thread! One of us will be disappointed, who should it be?

We have two name choices. Neither one of us is happy about the other's choice. We have been through every name we can think of and, without a word of a lie, there is not one single name in the entire world that we agree on, believe me, we've tried and it's beginning to grind us down. We've just got totally different taste in names. So we've accepted that one of us will have to get used to a name we're not wild about.

Anyone else in the same position, what did you do? Is it possible to live with a name that's just ok and not The Name?

I love Verity.

Is Felicity not exactly half way between Madeline and Verity?

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 20/10/2011 15:25

Oh God no. Felicity is the real reason he hates Verity, it's apparently a certain type of name and it winds him up (despite his background being that certain type of person IYSWIM). It's taken me 6 months to free Verity from Felicity associations.

ChippingInToThePumpkinLantern · 20/10/2011 15:28

Oops. Not Felicity then.

Maddison

Kennedy

Georgia

evamummy · 20/10/2011 15:31

It doesn't matter what WE think.

What matters is that the OP and her dh find a name THEY can live with. If not love, then at least like. There must be a name out there, honestly!

minipie · 20/10/2011 15:37

Ahhhh now I understand. Ok, we need a name like Verity but without of those kind of associations Smile

If Madeleine is his "compromise" name, then what is your "compromise" name?

What do you think of:
Liberty
Juliet
Amity
Serena
Constance
Honor
Romilly
Cecily
Jessamyn
Marianne
Jocelyn
Emily

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 20/10/2011 15:45

I don't have a compromise name Whoever said upthread we were stubborn is spot on, only I'm more stubborn than him :o

I do toy with Julia every so often...
Honor is a family name (his), don't think he's that wild about it though. Like Connie, not keen on Constance. I could get him to agree on Amity and then suggest changing the 'Am' to 'Ver' at the last minute :o

Ho hum...

WineAndPizza · 20/10/2011 16:00

I love Verity. What about just 'Vee' as a nickname?

How about Cecily as a compromise? It's got a similar sound but I think it's more 'flowery'.

Lonnie · 20/10/2011 16:22

laughs Ive so got your dh's sense of name as I love Flora for a name and I dont mind Amelia ...

I think Cecily or Cecilia might work for both of you?

startail · 20/10/2011 16:23

Verity or Amelia I could live with either, agree Maddie makes me sad even though I know a delightful one.

CobOnTheCorn · 20/10/2011 16:27

Ok this is a long shot but...I went for a walk to the local cemetary and I noticed lots of names that I either hadn't heard of or certainly not heard for a while.

How about going for a stroll with your dh just in case inspiration strikes.

WineAndPizza · 20/10/2011 16:29

Grin Lonnie

exoticfruits · 20/10/2011 16:33

We had the same problem-you have to keep going until you agree-not settle for one. If you do settle for one you need someone who isn't involved to toss a coin.

Crumbletopping · 20/10/2011 16:35

Laura - rhymes with Flora but not so flowery or margariney.
Florence.

THere MUST be one name you can agree on!!! Is DD1 old enough to have a say? can you look back at family tree for inspiration?

HettyAmaretti · 20/10/2011 16:40

Julia is lovely.

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 20/10/2011 16:42

DD1's contribution is Peppa and Dipdap, if that's any clue to her age and helpfulness... :o

Like Laura but one in the family already. I have thought about family tree. My aunt has done it back a couple of hundred years and if nothing is decided by the end of Nov when I see her then I'll get her to fire it up and have a plough through.

I swear there isn't one name we agree on :o We went through the top 5000 odd names a few weeks back and dismissed them all except our chosen ones

OP posts:
iggi999 · 20/10/2011 16:44

We couldn't agree either but we didn't know the sex, so we agreed I'd choose the name if it was a girl, him if it was a boy. I had a boy, and got to pick the middle name.
I still wouldn't have picked the name ds has myself, but within days it just became his name, iyswim. I wouldn't worry too much if your dh one of you has to compromise.

minipie · 20/10/2011 16:52

Have you tried nymbler? Bit American but v useful if you have a few names that you think are ok-but-not-quite-right.

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 20/10/2011 16:58

Just trying that nymbler. Ironically it's throwing up lots of names that were on our longshortlist.

OP posts:
Cwtchbach · 20/10/2011 17:17

I'm just thinking of my family tree now to see if it throws anything up. Edith, Ethel, Lydia, Lavinia, Martha, Beryl, Olive, Vera, Evelyn, Rachel, Mable, Jennetta (think someone made that up!), Lizzie, Maria, Harriet

I realise that some of those are stinkers, just thinking 'aloud'

Cwtchbach · 20/10/2011 17:34

Ooh, also, what about a Welsh name, a few girls names sound very strong but have a lovely flowery meaning - could that be a compromise?

Angharad - intensifying love
Branwen - from the Mabinogion - Welsh folklore
Bronwen - blessed breast
Carys/ Cerys - Love
Delyth - Pretty

JamieComeHome · 20/10/2011 17:45

I'd put Verity and Madeleine in the same ball-park, FWIW

How about:

Serena
Esther
Cordelia
Margaret - Meg, Maggie, Peggy
Lana
Vanessa
Christina
Elodie

JamieComeHome · 20/10/2011 17:46

love Delyth, Cwtchbach

JamieComeHome · 20/10/2011 17:49

Julia is lovely

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 20/10/2011 18:22

That's it, I officially give up. Julia was suggested before and he liked it. I've been thinking about it this afternoon and actually rather like the idea of it so suggested it just now. Got an out and out no.

Sod it, let him call her what he likes.

OP posts:
JamieComeHome · 20/10/2011 18:26

Oh Dear

It will happen.

Dh and I thought we'd run out of ideas (actually, he vetoed all of mine). Then we found "the one"

How unusual would you go?
