@givemebooks this one has some free Dr Who blanket panels on their blog.

sophs29 · 10/08/2021 12:14

Haha @InTheNightWeWillWish I'm sorry but the naughtier they are - the cuter I find them 😭😂 my MIL has two labs and I absolutely love them! I hope he enjoyed his nap after harassing you 😉😂
@givemebooks I remember you ☺️ I hope you find a pattern you like soon! Sorry I can't recall seeing any so I'm unable to help!

givemebooks · 10/08/2021 14:38

Hello all again and thanks for the welcome!!

I have managed to find the blanket i liked instructions is the yarn geekery doctor who one and i have changed 2 of the panels as i let my son pick which ones he wanted!

The pic below is what I will make, bit nervous as its my first time trying C2C so any tips would be great

My main question is what yarn would you use? The instructions say vannas choice or red heart super saver but they have neither on the wool warehouse can i use any other aran? Other pics are yarn info

Any advice would be great 👍 as I am stuck!!

You could check out yarnsub @givemebooks, there might be some helpful suggestions there.

Otherwise, I'm the type who would just sub any other aran yarn 🤷‍♀️ I can't see it going far wrong doing that tbh. I quite like Deramores anti-pilling aran :)

CrochetBug · 10/08/2021 15:15

You can sub any aran yarn for aran yarn, although I would stick to acrylic for a blanket. Stylecraft and Hayfield bonus are both really good imo.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 10/08/2021 15:56

givemebooks I also like the deramores Aran and stylecraft aran. Both are acrylic yarns. I find the colours slightly different between the two brands, stylecraft has a bigger choice of colours but I find deramores tend to have the colours that I want more.

I like C2C blankets, once you get the hang of them I find them quite therapeutic because you can just plod along with the blanket without checking on the pattern too frequently. Good for when you’re watching TV or you’ll be picking it up and putting it down a lot. They work up quite quickly and it looks like you’ll be doing several C2C so you should be able to complete one and not lose where you are. There are two different ways of doing C2C, a half treble C2C and treble C2C (U.K. terms so if the CAL is in US terms it’ll be a half double C2C or double C2C). The half treble/half double C2C has slightly smaller gaps but will also be smaller than the treble/double C2C. My guess is that you’ll be doing the treble/double C2C so you can watch this tutorial video m.youtube.com/watch?v=I5G9IM24LFU which explains it quite well.

lucysmam · 10/08/2021 17:32

Thinking about it; I think Stylecraft is slightly cheaper than the Deramores own brand on Deramores. I liked that too when I did dd1's cardi.

givemebooks · 10/08/2021 19:43

Thank you all so much! And for the video too just what I needed! Lots of research to while I wait for my order, went with the suggested stylecraft almost had all the colours needed just 1 I had to switch to another aran but all ordered!

Used a discount code but still almost £60 in yarn! But this should keep me busy for a long time!!

sophs29 · 10/08/2021 20:04

That blanket looks so cool @givemebooks how exciting to have a big project to start! I had never even heard of "C2C" until you posted it on this thread 😂

givemebooks · 10/08/2021 21:11

@sophs29 me neither! Only found it last night while googling doctor who crochet! Up till after midnight reading and watching videos! Ha!

Nervous about it particularly adding colours as people use a bobbin style!?

I am so excited though, I have missed crochet and learning it so much!

tizwozliz · 10/08/2021 21:24

@sophs29 the crochet toys are holding up really well. Duckie has a pulled thread on his eye but otherwise no damage, just a bit of dirt

Can I join? I can knit, I do diamond painting and now I'm trying to learn crochet. I bought the Bob minion kit from Aldi and it's an advanced kit apparently. So I'm starting at the beginning and made a granny square today.

Last night I was trying to crochet along to you tube doing magic circles but I was struggling so I decided to try something easier just to get the hang of it before I try again.

Here is my pride and joy lol

Hi cookiemonster5! Yay - you made a lovely square Grin. It's very neat for a total beginner!

cookiemonster5 · 11/08/2021 02:38

Thank you. I also do cross stitch but haven't been in the mood to do that for a while. Today im trying the magic circles and I WILL master it lol

sophs29 · 11/08/2021 08:36

Yes @givemebooks I'm not familiar with bobbin style either but I think @lucysmam is, she's making a scarf currently and looks very organised with all her bobbins 😃 I hadn't crocheted in a couple of months due to just not having enthusiasm and doing my other hobbies (sewing and painting) but suddenly have the urge to crochet again! I think I prefer crocheting when it's cold..as strange as that sounds 😂

@tizwozliz she's just perfect, and I'm glad she's being a good girl (for now) and looking after her toys 😂☺️

Welcome @cookiemonster5 that is a very good square! I taught myself through YouTube, I could only watch short videos as the longer ones I just lost interest though 😬

Oh I finished my (my mums) pair of socks! ones slightly tighter than the other but I'm still happy with them, and there's only 1gram of yarn difference in their weight so I'm quite happy with that after having to keep changing my tension 😂 I'm definitely going to make myself some, but probably use a different pattern, the ribbed cuff on these ones was quite monotonous!

givemebooks · 11/08/2021 08:53

@sophs29 your socks are amazing!! And the yarn colour fantastic!! What are you making next? :)

@cookiemonster5 welcome! Your square is lovely well done! I am very new to crochet too! Learnt via you tube! And just had a break! My first project was like you making granny squares I them put them all together and made a cushion!

If your looking for a bigger project when i joined this thread after xmas they hosted a CAL (crochet along) we did the spicer life blanket and the instructions/videos and the amazing amount of new stitches I learnt was brilliant I would highly recommend looking for a similar project :)

lazylinguist · 11/08/2021 09:20

Beautiful socks, @sophs29! I hope your mum liked them! My most appreciative sock recipient is ds, who loves his so much that he puts them on as soon as they're out of the wash every time. In fact, another pair for him is next on my 'to knit' list!

Yy @cookiemonster5 - doing a crochet-along blanket like A Spicier Life that we did, or one of the ones from Coastal Crochet is a great way for a beginner to learn a range of stitches. I had only ever done a few squares until I did the Seaside Stashbuster blanket.

lucysmam · 11/08/2021 10:00

Hi @cookiemonster5! Your square looks much better than my first one...I sulked my way through it because I wanted to do the fun stuff right now Grin

@givemebooks I am using bobbins on a scarf at the mo - wooden clothes pegs. Do NOT use wooden pegs if you use pegs, they're snaggy & annoying me. Oh, and, they're heavy/unweildy to manouvre my project with, but that might be because they're concentrated in one area maybe. I think I should have gone for plastic maybe.

@sophs29 those socks are right up my alley for cool wintery mornings when I sit & have my brew without interruptions! What yarn did you use?

Errol's mat is currently blocking - it's a bit wavy in places - it's quite breezy outside so should dry fairly quickly.

I'm going to tidy up, clean the fridge before my Tesco shop arrives , do a few bits off my Rainbow/Guide list & then start a jumper for me I think :)

lucysmam · 11/08/2021 10:04

@givemebooks I've attached a pic of my bobbins :)

givemebooks · 11/08/2021 10:51

@lucysmam , hello again! Woe what a fantastic amount of bobbins! Thanks for the tip i scrolled back and did see your scarf its brilliant, i have a hubby and son who are liverpool fans too! They would live it!

I am feeling moody! As i want my yarn to arrive but feel in the crochet mood but don't want to start anything else ha before the blanket!!!

sophs29 · 11/08/2021 11:49

Thank you everyone 🥰 I'm looking after mum tomorrow so I will see if she likes them! I'm sure she will, she is also a crafter, so appreciates the work gone into things!

The CAL was great fun, I learnt so many new stitches and thought I'd hate making a blanket, but because most rows are different, it's varied and fun! I'm intending to start another one when it's cold enough to have a blanket over my lap 😂

@lucysmam i nabbed it from my mums stash but it's this one, each one of my socks used only 29g (well one was 28g) haha! and the pattern I used was the wintermint slipper socks pattern - I reckon it would be easy to find on Pinterest or Ravelry, I did have to add extra rows to start thoughts I got to the ankle!

sophs29 · 11/08/2021 11:50

That was supposed to say 'though so' not thoughts 😑🙄😂

lucysmam · 11/08/2021 14:38

Do you use Facebook @givemebooks? I've joined a graphgan group on there that's good for help & tips, as well as seeing how other people work on their graph patterns.

I've tried to attach a link but not sure if it'll work properly - the share link came up differently to the one for my Rainbow/Guide unit fb group pages

free graphgans for all

lazylinguist · 12/08/2021 07:45

Me too! I've done two of those types of blanket now and really enjoyed both of them. I do quite like a big project if it's not too difficult and has plenty to keep me interested.

How does my magic circle look? I lost count and I'm struggling to figure out where the round started in order to count back. Any tips?
