I don't suppose anyone here has tried socks/slipper socks with just normal DK and can tell me how it worked out?

The sock book I use (knitting not crochet) has patterns for socks from fine fingering yarn right up to chunky yarn. I think the problem with using normal dk etc as opposed to sock yarn is that the soles and heels wear quite quickly or go all felted because there's no nylon in there to reinforce it.

First glove completed ready to sew up! I'm going to wait until the second's finished though so I remember to do them opposite ways up.

Your bride and groom are fab tizwoz, I hope they're well received!

I've never tried socks...yet. Maybe I ought to try socks 🤔

@lazylinguist yes that makes sense! I just didn't want to get another yarn when I wasn't sure if I'd be any good/enjoy making socks first! Turns out my mum has a sock yarn that she can't get on with (she bought it thinking it was regular DK), so I'm going to try that also!

@lucysmam what a lovely pattern and colour!

lazylinguist · 06/08/2021 17:52

I looove making socks! I haven't made any for a while because I got a bit over-keen when I finally learned how to make them, and made about 7 pairs in a row Grin.

@lazylinguist I can see how it could become addictive! I love cosy socks so if mums ones turns out ok I will definitely be making myself some Grin

lazylinguist · 07/08/2021 11:05

I've just bought myself a ticket to go to Yarndale. It's not far from me, but I've never been before and am quite excited!

Oh my @lazylinguist that looks fab! How exciting! Can't wait to see what goodies you bring home!

I think I'm already going wrong with the sock, I'm following a different pattern than the one I bought for now..I've started and in the pattern it says that where I'm at now should cover my foot up to my ankle..there's no way it will, not even if I stretch it 😂😂 I don't know whether to just carry on until it gets to the measurement it's supposed to be at, and then carry on as the pattern says. But surely if I do that, it will be too small up ahead too 😂 oh I don't know 😂

Sympathies sophs! Socks were my nemesis until I bought my sock book. I had initially tried a couple of very popular, theoretically pretty simple and reliable sock patterns from Ravelry and they just didn't seem to work at all, although I was sure I was doing what the pattern said Confused. I was baffled! I still don't know what went wrong- I should go back sometime and have another go at one if those patterns now that I understand the sock construction principles!

Maybe I'll ask for a sock book for Christmas @lazylinguist 😂 I know I crochet tight but I didn't think that would matter too much as the pattern creator said that she did too! I'm going to try and crochet a bit looser and just see if I can wing it..😂

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 07/08/2021 14:36

Oh wow sophs that's a lovely wool but yeah, just a little short on your foot Grin are you sure you can trust the pattern? Your crochet doesn't look that tight!

sophs29 · 07/08/2021 15:37

It's lovely isn't it @FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack it's strange because I added it to my ebay watch list, then I went to mums to look after her for the day and we was sorting through some of her craft bits and it was there 😂 she doesn't know I'm attempting to make her something with it though but she happily gave it to me!

Haha it's not even like I have big feet - a size 5, luckily my mum has smaller feet than me, I've got this so far (picture hopefully attached) so I'll see how the rest of the pattern pans out! I don't think I'll be using this pattern again though, I don't really like the effect!

Your yarn's pretty sophs, I hope your mum likes her socks!

I've finished my gloves - they're a bit loose; obviously I'm not clinging onto the yarn to tension it any more Grin I think they maybe need a little bit of sherring elastic woven around the top 🤔 I'm pleased with them other than that.

Wondering what to start next now. I haven't got enough red to start on uniform for Bluebell so that's on my town shopping list for next week. Maybe a jumper for me...

@lucysmam thank you! Your gloves are lovely! Cant believe I'm already thinking about winter makes like you! Feels like we haven't had much of a summer really!

lucysmam · 07/08/2021 16:17

I know - I bought a vintage pattern on etsy a while ago, for the princely sum of about 76p, for a crochet winter village. I think that might be tonight's reading & having a look for a few autumnal patterns (leaves, pumpkins etc).

My friend's just commented on my fb post that she'd buy a pair if I was selling the gloves...I'm wandering round like Grin!

sophs29 · 07/08/2021 17:59

@lucysmam that sounds lovely! Is it more for children or a sophisticated adult one? ☺️ I've seen little crochet houses somewhere (probably Pinterest) that look so sweet!
Oh what a great feeling knowing someone appreciates your hard work! It's good that they're so quick to make up too!

lucysmam · 07/08/2021 18:21

@sophs29 I've attached a picture. It may end up more child like once I'm done with it Grin

Hahaha @lucysmam wow they look so intricate! That church is amazing!

lucysmam · 07/08/2021 18:30

I need some crochet thread first - I'm going to check ebay prices before venturing to the shop in town.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 07/08/2021 19:09

Oh, I just saw you're going to Yarndale lazy Envy I'm so jealous! My LYS are going and taking all their yarns on the cone, I need to go and buy more of the green I'm using before they go in case they sell it all...

I've redone my fairisle yoke with white as a contrast, it's so much better I should have listened to the pattern in the first place

Those are pretty lucysmam!

That looks so much better Flavia!

lucysmam · 07/08/2021 19:53

As unlikely as it is, does anyone know anywhere I could buy just the 2 balls of stylecraft aran in grey that I need without paying slightly more than the rrp locally, or without stupid postage costs?

lucysmam · 07/08/2021 19:53

Grey should have been graphite!

tizwozliz · 07/08/2021 20:41

Oh wow, that crochet village looks amazing

sophs29 · 07/08/2021 20:46

@FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack that is like a piece of art! Honestly it's absolutely beautiful!

@lucysmam they do it on eBay but I'm unsure on how the price compares!

InTheNightWeWillWish · 07/08/2021 21:08

That crochet village looks so pretty but I struggle with 4ply at the minute, not sure I’m quite ready for thread. I’d just have to do a slightly bigger one in DK.

I’ve also been thinking about starting my Christmas stuff! Dog1 has a Santa scarf, last year I swapped it between dog1 and dog2 but I might make dog2 his own this year. The pattern should be simple enough to replicate. I’m also looking at doing some little appliqués and giving them to the car home to make Christmas cards or gift tags with. They sell they’re little crafty bits to raise money for their activities, which hopefully can start properly again next year. So if they’ll need time to sell them and make them into cards, I’m going to have to get started pretty soon!

Flavia that looks really great. I quite liked the first one but it stands out a lot better this way.
