I have finally made a start on a blanket which I've had planned for months. I bit the bullet and faced my fear of starting something that is so big and has such a large foundation chain but I have gone with the Attic24 Ripple blanket

Mine is less bright --and rather more like a scarf]]

Beautiful Grin

The only fallout that I'm experiencing from being part of the MN blankets is DD1 wants me to make her something similar to take to Uni in the Autumn. As a project it's fine in principle - but both her and me want it to be in Cashmerino and the amount I spend on the yarn would be enought to keep her in booze for a couple of weeks food for half the term. Smile If I do it I may do a ripple blanket as I was dreading hooking or sewing grannies together.

SoupDragon · 06/03/2012 11:09

Yes, the MN blankets have rather spoilt me wrt the yarn. Which is how I spent over £100 on cashmerino silk aran for a winter blanket Hmm This one is in Sublime baby cotton Kapok so will be effect for an English summer :o

Before I bit the bullet and started this, I preferred the thought of hooking the squares together to the perceived nightmare of a long foundation chain. I'm glad I went with this.

It's so lovely, I saw your earlier post in another thread and now I've got a bunch of wool in my basket at Black Sheep, just can't bring myself to checkout given the size of my stash already, willpower is failing though....

SoupDragon · 06/03/2012 12:18

I justified it to myself by, er, by... oh I just shut my eyes and clicked "checkout"

Oooh! I've got it! it's an investment. Yes, an investment because the finished blanket will be of heirloom quality and my children and grandchildren (future) will fight over it in the event of my death.

Ooh- I like your colour choices! Very nice

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 06/03/2012 19:17

I've spent nearly £100 on Sublime for a blanket I'm making Blush

I've been buying it ball by ball since last November - I keep telling myself I'll have this blanket forever.

The last blanket I made was in Stylecraft DK acrylic so working with the Sublime Casmere is delightful

ignores the huge basket of Stylecraft that is left

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 06/03/2012 19:18

Soupdragon, was the cashmerino silk aran nice to crochet with?

I love the colours you have chosen for your ripple

Alambil · 06/03/2012 20:26

that's lovely!

I'm so jealous; DS wants me to make him a blanket. I'm doing squares bound with white.

I haven't invested heaps in it though; the yarn's only set me back £11 atm incase I can't do it on my own!

SoupDragon · 06/03/2012 21:16

I haven't started on the cashmerino silk stuff yet. The Ripple is the result or a previous extravagance (but it was a bargain honest!). The colours kind of chose themselves - I bought a yellow and the cream as single bargain balls and then my aspirations grew and I bought enough for a blanket.

It's actually rather easy, Lewis, as it is just repeating the same thing over and over. Far easier than some of the complicated square patterns for the MN blankets.

I taught myself to crochet last July.

I now have one drawer in a large chest of drawers full of yarn Blush

Soupy I am doing exactly the same! Grin
Spookily similar actually! I started crochet last summer (thank you internet and youtube!) and have started the attic24 ripple. I'm making a baby sized blanket for a friend who is due very soon. So far I have about 1/4 done as I got distracted by illness as then the MN squares. :)
My colour choices are blues and greens but are only stylecraft special dk. It feels nice but is not the same as the cashmerino. Really like your calm, neutral colours.

Rippling is very soothing - once you've cracked the bloody foundation chain which had me very Confused for the first 7 attempts!

SoupDragon · 07/03/2012 12:11

Mine is a full sized blanket - imagine the foundation chain for that! :o That's why I'd put it off for so long.

It is kind of soothing and rhythmical although I've made a couple of mistakes - the pattern seems nice and forgiving in that respect :)

PurpleFrog · 07/03/2012 12:26

Very nice! Smile

So exactly how long is your foundation chain SoupDragon?

SoupDragon · 07/03/2012 12:42

4 miles. Or it seemed like it! :o

At least 255 chains. I think it ended up more as it didn't look big enough.

OP posts:
PurpleFrog · 07/03/2012 12:53

Wow! So roughly how big is your "full sized" blanket going to be?

I really fancy doing a blanket. I like the look of both the ripple and and granny stripe ones. I hate sewing/hooking things together so would be very happy to get the worst bit over at the beginning. But... I had promised myself to do some stash-busting this year before embarking on any large new projects. I have too many "investments" taking up space in the loft. Wink

How easy is the ripple to do while watching tv? I guess the granny stripe would easier, with a bigger "hole" to aim for each time, and no counting involved.

Whenisitmysleepytime · 07/03/2012 12:56
Shock

Mine was 140. The chain itself was easy but I found the first row of working in to the chain really hard. I also made a few mistakes with the end of each row for 8-9 rows then I twigged what I should be doing. I didn't rip it all out tho- couldn't bear to start the bloody chain again! Hmm

Whenisitmysleepytime · 07/03/2012 12:57

It's dead easy to do in front of tv once you've done a few rows. It's basically 4tr, 2 tr Increases, 4tr, 2 tr decreases and repeat to fade. :)

Methe · 07/03/2012 13:05

I'm making a kingsized ripple for my bed, i've been plodding through it since November!

mines 6dc 3dc increase 6dc 3dc decrease ( might be TC? The tutorial I watched was american)

this is the yarn i'm using. I only chose it because it was what they had in my local hobbycraft but it seems to be working really well. It is blues and creams.

SoupDragon · 07/03/2012 15:43

I don't know how big it's going to be - I chained until it looked the right length to wrap nicely round me :o

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 07/03/2012 15:47

I don't think it's king sized though Shock

OP posts:
MiladyGardenia · 07/03/2012 15:52

Oooh. I like that. I only started crocheting again recently and in fact only just learned the granny square.

I have now nearly finished what is possibly the world's largest granny square- aka a blanket for our (ahem) superking size bed. Blush Grin

I am so making a ripply one next...

kellestar · 07/03/2012 18:45

I made a baby ripple out of sock yarn bits and bobs, and it's lovely. And it was cot sized.

I am currently working on the hexagon granny's and joining as I am going. Which is actually much easier and the blanket builds up easily. I have been hooking between 5-8 squares an evening, a total of 159 so should be finished in two weeks. Confused which is more of a dubious look.

SoupDragon · 07/03/2012 20:09

Two weeks would be good. I'm not expecting to finish mine before winter :o

And on that note, it's time to retire to the sofa with my basket, yarn and hook :)

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 08/03/2012 07:21

I sat in my kingsized bed last night trying to imagine a granny square big enough to cover it and then expand it to super king size... good lord!
