I have finally made a start on a blanket which I've had planned for months. I bit the bullet and faced my fear of starting something that is so big and has such a large foundation chain but I have gone with the Attic24 Ripple blanket

Mine is less bright --and rather more like a scarf]]

Acquired, I think it is :)

Been looking at yarn online this morning. (Limited supplies available locally. I would love to open a craft shop.) I think I want something quite bright and cheerful, but with a high wool content. It's looking like King Cole merino blend DK at the moment, as I know that comes in lots of nice colours. Am open to suggestions though.

I, too, plan on using the "What, this? No, I've had this aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages! Don't you remember me showing this to you? You never listen to me!" line.

PurpleKittyKnitting · 11/03/2012 10:04

yes that sounds good, the only thing I could think of was available!

SoupDragon · 11/03/2012 13:21

According to Mollie Makes, code MMFP gets you 10% off at Deramores...

Donkey - it would be lovely if there were more 'old fashioned' craft shops around :) Sadly I think the internet has killed them all off :(

SoupDragon · 11/03/2012 16:40

The craft shop local to me is after a new owner. They hold classes and "knit an natter" type things, I imagine to make them more attractive than an internets site and to bring business in.

... and yet, despite doing all they can... they are looking for a new owner. Kind of says it all really doesn't it :(

SoupDragon · 11/03/2012 16:55

Oh, no, not at all! It's for personal reasons. The shop is, apparently, going from strength to strength.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 11/03/2012 19:37

Oh really?? Well that's a nice surprise :)

What area is it in? (PM me if you don't want to say outloud! :) )

DonkeyTeapot · 11/03/2012 19:45

I'm on the Isle of Man, there are four shops that sell yarn of any kind, on the island. One has a large range of Robin yarns and other acrylic - no actual wool at all. The second is a Sirdar stockist, which also stocks a bit of alpaca, but the stock is very stagnant, doesn't change much, and the owner is downright rude. The third is a Rowan stockist but only has about five items out of their range, plus a few King Cole items (but not the merino blend DK), and the fourth has some lovely things but it's like a jumble sale and you have to rummage through bags and boxes to find random balls and check the dye lots yourself. Only the second one I mentioned is a dedicated yarn shop, the others are all selling other things, with a small yarn corner. As much as I like to buy local and support the island's economy, if they don't supply what I want to buy, I HAVE to order online. I should open my own shop.

Anyway, have been rummaging in my wool cupboard and am wondering how big a blanket I can make with what I have :)

SoupDragon · 11/03/2012 20:14

It's here. Interestingly they don't sell online at all and have an ugly website.

OP posts:
ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 12/03/2012 08:36

Soupy - the first thing that I'd have to change would be that website, ugly doesn't even cover it!! followed by the gingham curtains Other than that it looks like a fab shop, quite big too. The do sell online - well, at least it let me put things in a basket...

... and you would not believe how close I used to live to it and didn't know it was there!!

SoupDragon · 12/03/2012 09:03

Oh, I always assumed it was just like an online catalogue of what you could buy in the shop :o It's just up the road so farm easier for me to drive there so I've never looked that closely.

The shop is great, if a little twee. They seem to sell everything (although not the blanket wool)

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 12/03/2012 09:04

Far easier. No farming involved at all.

Just seen this, what is Mollie Makes? Do I just quote that code for a discount?

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 12/03/2012 10:08

No farming at all - how sad. Hmm well, actually - wool does come from animals - so I suppose there is some farming - just not in the shop! Grin

Next time I venture up to Ikea I'll pop into the shop!

SoupDragon · 12/03/2012 10:56

Mollie makes is a fluffy craft magazine. It is all about the kind of life I simply dream of, far removed form reality.

I assume you quote the discount code somewhere - there should be a box at checkout to put it in I imagine.

OP posts:
DonkeyTeapot · 12/03/2012 11:57

Thanks Soupy. Just googled it - it looks very frilly. I'm not big on frills myself, but they did quote a discount code on the website (MM12 now) and I did need more yarn for my ripple blanket, so I have just ordered some from Deramores and I did indeed get discount. Woo hoo! Thanks for the heads up!

angelpantser · 13/03/2012 14:45

Cheers Soupy!

I am now rippling too. It will (hopefully) cover a single bed . I've done three and a bit rows. I had to venture into DD2's BEDROOM OF DOOM to measure it. That girls is so grounded when she gets home from school. Shock Grin

nickelhasababy · 13/03/2012 15:02

i might start rippling soon too.

thought about doing it in a square, but realised it'd end up loads of normal treble with a ripple stripe down the middle.

SoupDragon · 13/03/2012 15:29

LOL @ Bedroom of Doom. DS1 has one of those. As does DS2.

And so he ripple spreads... like a ripple on a pond :o

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 13/03/2012 15:30

You'd need to do a large square to make it work. I toyed with the idea.

OP posts:
nickelhasababy · 13/03/2012 15:41

i meant a square "in the round" like the granny blanket. not like you're doing.

(if you knew that then...)
you'd be able to do it if you made a big enough trough in the middles.
and remember to increase the ripple on the corners.

SoupDragon · 13/03/2012 17:22

Oh, I see.

It might work but it would need careful planning to get it to ripple round the corners properly.

OP posts:
DartsAgain · 19/03/2012 11:34

I'm finishing off a granny square blanket for DD, as she wanted one to wrap around her when she's sat in her room. I would have used this ripple pattern had I seen it (years ago) when I started this blanket. I think I'll use this pattern for DS as he now wants a blanket.

If that goes well, I'll use the ripple for a kingsize blanket for our bed Grin

I've got workmen in today replacing our windows, and sitting down stitching a blanket would help to keep me warm...Smile

SoupDragon · 19/03/2012 12:42

And so the ripple spreads... :o
