I am Rippling! (crochet related)

I have finally made a start on a blanket which I've had planned for months. I bit the bullet and faced my fear of starting something that is so big and has such a large foundation chain but I have gone with the Attic24 Ripple blanket

Mine is less bright --and rather more like a scarf]]

know what you mean about the wool am hooking a blanket in granny stripes and flower squares. So do the stripes off the joined squares to avoid long foundation row , i was enjoying using all the blue and purple stylecraft, but know knitting the squares I so want more Debbie Bliss. However since I cannot sell one of my lovely boys I shall have to get used to it again

MiladyGardenia · 08/03/2012 08:41

Blush I know, Soup. Not entirely orthodox, I suspect. But you know how sometimes you start something and just kind of carry on... It does look rather pretty though. Grin

SoupDragon · 08/03/2012 10:48

DD has a "giant granny square" blanket but hers is less than 2' square :) I did it to practice in my early days (it was really good in this respect as I was just repeating the same thing over and over and didn't really have to think about it).

I salute you. I managed half a cushion cover look

DonkeyTeapot · 09/03/2012 09:29

SoupDragon, that's lovely, I like your colours. (It's actually a great idea for a scarf too!) Oh dear, I think I might just have to add another project to my "To do" list.

I'm using Cashsoft DK for the blankets, have never used it before and it is lovely. I would love to buy a load of it but I really can't justify buying any more yarn. I mean, seriously. I am lucky enough to have a massive craft cupboard. To give you an idea of size, DP built it, and the door on it is a room door. (It's not all yarn in there though, it's fleece and fabric and quilting stuff too.)

seaweedhead · 09/03/2012 09:35

I'm rippling a blanket using that exact same pattern! I started it months ago and am still not halfway.

In my defense I have a toddler and a baby under my feet most of the time and can't crochet because my toddler grabs the yarn, ties it up in knots and tangles himself up in it.

SoupDragon · 09/03/2012 10:07

I would love a craft cupboard... When I move I am going to have a whole room for crafting in [sigh]

Seaweedhead, you are not filling me with confidence. Months and not half way you say? Mind you, my children are at school all day which gives me plenty of time to sit on the sofa and crochet all day if I wanted to do chores.

The blanket yarn is lovely isn't it, Donkey? The batch I have for my next blanket (hahahaha) is equally gorgeous but (and this is how I justified it) was reduced in the Blacksheep bargains area.

I want a sunroom for crochetting and my plants. Kids would not be allowed over the threshold, nor would Dh and his stinky arse.

At the moment all my wool is wedged behind the sofa :(

seaweedhead · 09/03/2012 11:18

I do tend to start new projects all the time so usually have several things on the go- not just crochet either. I'm currently making summer dresses for baby dd, will have to get those finished before she grows out of them!

TwoJackRussellsandababy · 09/03/2012 16:15

When we finally manage to buy a bigger house I am so having a room of my own (well with a spare bed in it too), going to have my craft stuff all organised and my sewing machines set up and lock myself in there for whole afternoons whilst DH and DS have some time together, only a couple more years to wait though....

DonkeyTeapot · 09/03/2012 16:29

My craft cupboard is in what has come to be known as the wool room :) I can leave all my stuff set up and no one can moan about it being in the way. It is chilly in there though, and there is a massive radio / music unit thing in there taking up precious craft space! Once that's gone I want to get some proper shelving and worktop space set up.

I also have loads of projects on the go at once. There has to be something suitable for every occasion - something complex, something simple, something quick, and normally one or two big long term projects.

Now I just wish I had time to actually do some of them! Maybe when Mat leave is over I could just tell DP I've gone back to work, but secretly stay at home and make things. What do you reckon?

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 09/03/2012 17:16

My craft room is embarrasingly messy. I have a bad habit of having several projects on the go at once.
At the moment I am half way though a silk painting, some sewing, scrapbooking and a crocheted banket. For some unfathomable reason I have also decided I want to learn to knit.

I love buying crafty things. Last time I was in the wool shop I was very tempted but the Debbie Bliss Andes yarn but I managed to resist

Stitchthis · 10/03/2012 07:22

I've taken to leaving a copy of 'a room of ones own' lying around Grin

SoupDragon · 10/03/2012 07:44

I could have had a craft room. I chose to have a third child instead [sigh]

I'm doing my first ripple project, a cushion, just finished the first side (63 chains long so fairly manageable). I love it and find the endlessly repeating pattern very soothing, I do crochet in front of the telly but frequently have to undo a stitch or two. I also do a lot whilst sitting outside ballet, swimming lessons etc.

I paused last week to do granny squares for the MN blankets and decided that one of the pluses of doing small squares is that it is a lot easier to take out to the aforementioned ballet classes etc.

SoupDragon · 10/03/2012 09:55

It's growing!

I need to sort out a few mistakes with the early rows as I've clearly n=lest stitches somewhere and need to straighten the edge up. I am now in the swing of it and check my position every time I get to the 2DC increase parts.

Funnily enough, my blanket is coming to ballet with me shortly :o I dream of the day it will be too being to do so because then I will have to start the cashmerino silk aran squares for my winter blanket

We need ripple photos - so far I think I've only seen stitchthis's half a cushion cover :)

Dh has taken the dc out for the rest of the day! Grin (payback for his day day last weekend!)

So it's housework, lunch, RIPPLE! Grin and Noone to mess with me wool!

Pics to follow soupy!

nickelhasababy · 10/03/2012 12:11

it's beautiful, it really is!
Grin

I'll have a go at that stitch too, i think.

I have an ongoing granny blanket (which is called The Poorly Blanket), because our family had one of those in the house whilst I was growing up. Basically, you make it with scraps of wool. My mum's started off that way, and it grew to big enough to cover a person, but mine, although it started that way, carried on further (I can do 2 rows in a single ball of wool now!) and I work on it every now and then. It easily covers both me and DH when we snuggle on the settee Grin (and can be doubled over to create a warmer blanket for poorliness)
I plan to keep going on it forever.
I also made a matching pillow cover.

PurpleKittyKnitting · 10/03/2012 12:31

That is lovely! I am pretty new to crochet, I can only do granny squares and straight things or little flowers! I just love how crochet can do all these things in odd shapes!

I have just finished making a little bag. The strap was a chain of 216! Just before Christmas I did a huge blanket for my daughter made of 140 granny squares! Very proud of it I am!!

I really need to learn how to do increasing and decreasing but will just take my time with it for now. My next project is a bath mat with popcorn in it to make the shape of a star. I have practised those so should be OK

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 10/03/2012 12:36

The cushion I'm doing is about half way down this page. I'm just doing cream, green and yellow stripes. Previously I did two of the circular cushions just above it but it was a bit boring just doing ever larger circles of trebles.

cushions

I like the idea of an ongoing granny square blanket.

nickelhasababy · 10/03/2012 13:53

it's great because you don't ever need to stitch anything together - the square just gets bigger and bigger. Grin
I love going to wool shops (or anywhere that sells wool) and buying different colours.
There are a few rows with different textures too, but they didn't work so well.
I tend to stick to DK now.
But I've got plain colours, pastel colours, bright colours, multi-coloured colours etc.
the middle's a bit of a mess, because I was crap when I started - i'd never started one off before, and didn't quite get the concept of making each row equal in the middle. So it looks totally lopsided, and the centre looks too pale and weird. Blush
But I have to tell myself to think of it as my learning curve.

Whenisitmysleepytime · 10/03/2012 16:16

Well the house work is done and I've even done some DIY so it's ripple time. :)

Here it is. baby blanket ripple

What looks like navy is actually really dark green. I wish it wa navy now I've started but too late now. Hmm I think I'm about 1/4 of the way through and my friend's baby is due at the end of april. Better get busy. :)

nickelhasababy · 10/03/2012 16:24

oooh, it looks like sea waves! Grin

SoupDragon · 10/03/2012 16:30

I like the green!

Nickel, I have two big granny square blankets in my living room - the squares are probably each 1m square on one (I think it has 6 of these) and the other is, I think, a giant square but I may be mistaken. I bought them in a junk shop though, I didn't make them! I'm thinking of undoing one of them as it just doesn't look right (the colours I think) and will remake it. They will be the blankets my children are allowed to touch.

They are not touching my ripple, oh no no no no no.
