If you can knit AT ALL could you please CAT either of us?

We are making a blanket present with a Mn connection and would love as many people as feel willing and able to contribute a 15cm square, plain or fancy as you like, in cotton double knitting yarn. We can help with sourcing suppliers.
More details available off-board.

It's a surprise for the person in question, so please, please contact us for more info rather than make guesses etc on here...it's in an extremely good cause.

Very many thanks to anyone who feels able to help. XXX

Have just been in loft and can only find acrylic wool - does this make me a chav? Surely the lovely shops in Wimbledon Village will stock cotton DK, won't they?

Tinker · 26/10/2005 10:55

Did my first square last night! [excessively proud emoticon] Kept having to undo it as moss stitch kept turning into rib.

NotQuiteCockney · 26/10/2005 11:08

You know you can drop a stitch and use a crochet hook to pick it back up, fixing the problem bits, right? I do it all the time, carry a crochet hook with me.

My Big Square is 1/2 done.

Are we going to get (digital) piccies of the finished thing? Pretty please?

SenoraPostrophe · 26/10/2005 18:56

ok I have a question.

this cotton double knitting yarn - it's the thickness of normal wool right? If so I can't get any (only really thin shiny stuff, which I GUESS I could re-wind doubled up iyswim).

can anyone send me some?

SenoraPostrophe · 26/10/2005 18:57

actually a link to a website that ships abroad would do.

wallopyCOD · 26/10/2005 18:57

are pphs squares really posh tamunm

FauxVampire · 26/10/2005 19:04

Lovely Wimbledon shops do not have cotton DK...

Marina · 26/10/2005 19:32

Fauve, Senora, I can let you have some. How would you like two half-balls in different colours apiece, to give you choices of colours? Or if you are planning on a solo square, are you OK if it's just half a ball? I have some spare pretty colours?
Please CAT me with your addresses/preferences. My Yahoo is having e-spats with either our Firewall or Norton configs and is driving me nuts.

Marina, not been able to read down this thread properly but would be up for helping out - (new mum - need to go feed dd again, 6 weeks old and looks like hit growth spurt). Could you CAT me more info and what you're looking for? Could manage at least one square towards this project - maybe more depending on time/dd. Might need help getting the wool if I can't get in local John Lewis.

tamum · 26/10/2005 19:34

Hello Marina I have tried to email you a few times, inclduing SP's email address, but I guess you can't access the messages. Shall I try again or is it hopeless?

busybusybee · 26/10/2005 19:41

Hi i will make one - When do you need it buy?
Please do CAT me the details

FauxVampire · 26/10/2005 19:48

Thanks Marina, will email you - half a ball will be fine. Sorry was over-optimistic about stash of wool in loft.

princesspeahead · 26/10/2005 23:21

glad you got them marina! hope they are what you were expecting (apart from the rather-larger-than-ordered-sample-square)....

monstrousmummy · 27/10/2005 12:22

Calling all Square Knitters

Several people have been asking about a "deadline" for sending in squares. Tamum and I mulled this over and thought 19th November seemed do-able for most of us, except for maybe the volunteers based abroad. So can we say 19th for all UK based people and asap thereafter for everyone NOT in the UK?

Also we thought it might be a nice idea if you included a sticky label with your MN name on and your real name too, if you wish, so we can compile a "signed" card from all contributors when we send off the blanket. Apologies to the one or two Speedy Gonzaleses who have already sent their squares - do you mind very much sending me the label separately - this idea only occurred to us yesterday.

Thanks once again to you all.

Good idea Marina. Can I suggest that you repeat that message in a new thread? I had stopped looking at this one, your message just caught my eye when I went into "Threads I'm on". Scuse me for being bossy

Marina · 28/10/2005 09:21

OK everyone, Miaou's idea is a very good one, so nip along here for latest Square Knitting news...

mummytosteven · 31/10/2005 12:57

Marina or someone else in the know: please could you email me the address to send the square too at [email protected] - my home computer is broke, but I can just about read hotmail on my WAP browser on my mobile phone!

mummytosteven · 31/10/2005 13:00

PS

and pretty pretty please can I not have a moss stitch border - I am really struggling with knitting a moss stitch border onto a crochet square!

mummytosteven · 03/11/2005 13:54

Bump!

Could someone tell me where to send the squares, pretty please - I've done 3

Marina · 03/11/2005 14:02

Must thank SueW and Franke for some gorgeous squares safely received in recent days!

tamum · 04/11/2005 12:07

Sorry to be so long catching up with this- mummytosteven, I guess Marina has told you by now, but of course we won't make you knit borders onto your crochet Crochet lies flat of its own accord, doesn't it, I think, so it should be fine. Thank you!

SueW, you're right, the whole site seems to have disappeared into the ether. Fear not, there is some more here

LadyFioOfTipton · 04/11/2005 12:08

i would love too

sorry marina about the show

i do a knitting course now btw learning to follow patterns

hope evereyone is well 9in general) to all you knitters xx

hester · 04/11/2005 12:27

ooh, count me in! what's the deadline?

when i was at school we had to knit six inch squares for something called dorcas day. they would be sewn up into blankets and displayed in assembly hall. i never found out who dorcas was or where the blankets went, though rumour was that they went to pensioners in africa - which i very much doubt. they probably went to the same lucky peckham oaps who received our christmas boxes full of tinned fray bentos pies and miss muppet rennet.
