If you can knit AT ALL could you please CAT either of us?

We are making a blanket present with a Mn connection and would love as many people as feel willing and able to contribute a 15cm square, plain or fancy as you like, in cotton double knitting yarn. We can help with sourcing suppliers.
More details available off-board.

It's a surprise for the person in question, so please, please contact us for more info rather than make guesses etc on here...it's in an extremely good cause.

Very many thanks to anyone who feels able to help. XXX

I'd love to help but am ashamed that cannot knit or sew
good luck with it.

franke · 19/10/2005 15:11

I'll do one. I've got a trunk full of unused yarn. Does the 15cm include the moss stitch border or is it extra?

Marina · 19/10/2005 15:59

Thanks all, and those who have CATed me direct. I think I am up to date with my correspondence now. Much appreciated

Have you included me?

AuntyQuated · 19/10/2005 16:13

size 8s here
is that 4mm in 'old money'?

bundle · 19/10/2005 16:15

I'm not doing pictures my last attempts at intarsia were less than successful...

Blu · 19/10/2005 16:18

Batters: I was going to ask if your cat would model for me?

motherinferior · 19/10/2005 16:22

Blu! By all means drop round and see both of ours!

Marina · 19/10/2005 16:24

You too, Dingle, vill be added to the List. (Yes is the answer, CAT on way!). Can someone help AQ with her vintage needle question?
Bundle I passed mine off as lace...or crochet even to non-experts. Intarsia is the pits

Blu · 19/10/2005 16:26

What on earth is intarsia?

Dingle · 19/10/2005 16:34

Yes, I believe 4mm are old UK8s.

bundle · 19/10/2005 16:39

it is knitting with more than one colour, but instead of passing yarns across the back (bulky) as in fairisle, you just use shortish lengths and twist them (in order to avoid holes)

motherinferior · 19/10/2005 17:06

Oh, I can do that.

Or could, back in the jurassic age.

bundle · 19/10/2005 17:09
Blu · 19/10/2005 17:14

OK, so should we use old size 8's or new size 4mm with this cotton DK?
Mine will have holes and plenty of knobbly bits, anyway.

NotQuiteCockney · 19/10/2005 17:17

I wouldn't go for intarsia for this, not just because I hate intarsia (and dislike fairisle) but also because the wrong side, for intarsia, looks not that nice. Better to do something that looks good on both sides, surely?

tamum · 19/10/2005 17:27

I have to say I was going to do intarsia. It never occurred to me to worry about the back of the blanket to be honest. I'll try and be neat

Old size 8 are 4 mm (useful chart here , so that should be fine. I think the important thing is for the squares to be the same size, so what size needle you use strictly depends on how loose or tight your knitting is. I would be inclined to check the ball band when you get the yarn, because that will give you a guide for average tension, like 22 sts for 10 cm, for example, which is easy to convert to 15 cm!

Yes, franke, the 15 cm should include the moss stitch edge. I'm happy to try and help if anyone has any problems, and I'm sure Marina and bundle would be too

NotQuiteCockney · 19/10/2005 17:34

Oh, maybe I'm not doing intarsia just because I hate it.

Hmm, I was briefly very tempted by the idea of doing a textured castle (only one colour), but I think that would come out closer to 30cm x 30cm. And of course would have a good side and a bad side.

tamum · 19/10/2005 17:36

Well, I do too, but I don't mind a wee square

NotQuiteCockney · 19/10/2005 17:39

I guess intarsia's wrong side at least looks better than fairisle's. But there are more ends to weave in! Gah.

(I'm never sure how much to weave in, and the woven in ends always look so obvious and horrible to me, although I'm sure other people can't see them.)

weesaidie · 19/10/2005 20:16

Ooh after all this talk of intarsia I want to do it now! Have only done it a couple of times though and still not sure I am doing it right! Well I can always give it a go and if it looks s**t I'll knit a wee plain one!

Marina · 20/10/2005 09:54

My intarsia looks fairly grim from either side and the woven-in ends look like sandworms so it's textures and cables for moi I think.
Just bumping this for people who were not around yesterday and reiterating my thanks to everyone on this thread and off-board who has contacted me about this so far.
