If you can knit AT ALL could you please CAT either of us?

We are making a blanket present with a Mn connection and would love as many people as feel willing and able to contribute a 15cm square, plain or fancy as you like, in cotton double knitting yarn. We can help with sourcing suppliers.
More details available off-board.

It's a surprise for the person in question, so please, please contact us for more info rather than make guesses etc on here...it's in an extremely good cause.

Very many thanks to anyone who feels able to help. XXX

Oh yes, Marina..

'PS there is a poster for a daft-looking action caper film (pouting action heroine in micro skirt, ridiculous blurb etc) all over the tube right now...called Serenity! :-)'

LOL it's where I got my name from..........

motherpeculiar · 22/10/2005 20:08

what's loop?

Marina · 22/10/2005 20:16

MP, think it's a modish yarn boutique for N and E Londoners! How did you get on NQC?
(some of us southsider suburbanites have to make do with "John's Outsize Fashions...Knitting Wool also available")
Serenity it just makes me smile - one of those "I think of Mumsnet when..." moments there was a thread about the other week.
Stitch I owe you a CAT but my mail has gone phut. I have not forgotten you, honest.

I didn't make it today (no car), we're going tomorrow.

I expect it will be nice, but nowhere near as lovely (and cheap!) as yarn stores in Canada. So far, I've used John Lewis, and their knitting section is smaller than even the tiniest most backwater knitting store in Canada.

I've promised DS1 will be allowed to pick yarn for a hat for him, as I've made hats for everyone and their dog lately, but not him. (5 hats so far, I think. I've promised another one, too)

NotQuiteCockney · 22/10/2005 20:28

Oh, it's in Islington, and is here .

Marina · 22/10/2005 20:31

Well, knit HAT for ds pronto NQC. So where is Loop then?
Sadly, John Lewis timed the shrinkage of its previously humungous haberdashery section (for more Menswear FFS) with the renaissance of handknitting in this country. Fools.

I buy mine online these days from Kangaroo in Lewes. They have all the nicest home and import yarns and great service.

I'll have to try them. I tried angelyarns, and did like them, despite the name.

But I do prefer to buy in person. The yarn store I last went to in Canada was huge and really disorderly, just aisles and aisles of great yarn.

Marina · 22/10/2005 20:33

Why did I just know it would not be Chrisp St Market or Lakeside
Have fun

Well, I went, and I got some nice stuff. Some Debbie Bliss DK, and also some Laines du Nord stuff that is a bit thinner I think.

It was nice, but, well, tiny by Canadian standards. They had lots of interesting stuff, but not that wide a range of normal stuff.

motherpeculiar · 25/10/2005 11:15

Marina, Tamum - when do you want the squares by? (hope I haven't missed any deadlines through not paying enough attention). I'm nearly finished my third, in which I finally got a neat cast-on edge (but mucked up the border a bit in exchange)

SueW · 25/10/2005 13:20

I've done a square - woo hoo!!!! Where does it go to? What's the deadline, I might even manage another although have not yet sorted DD's felted bag and wanted to do that before my aunt flies back to Canada tomorrow so she could see the end result.

Miaou · 25/10/2005 13:27

deadline????? I haven't even got my wool yet. Dooooon't start without me......

NotQuiteCockney · 25/10/2005 15:18

I've done one regular square, and am now maybe 1/5 of the way through a big square (30cm x 30cm). The Debbie Bliss DK is a lot softer than the Rowan Handknit, and a bit thinner, too.

I also got some Laines du Nord stuff, but that's really really thin. Still might use it though.

tamum · 25/10/2005 16:58

If it's any comfort I am only half way through my second square, so don't fret I don't think we have a deadline really, just the next few weeks would be good.

tamum · 25/10/2005 17:03

oh suedonimmmmmm

suedonim · 25/10/2005 17:09

At your service??

tamum · 25/10/2005 17:10

Yippee, it worked You wouldn't like to join us would you?

suedonim · 25/10/2005 17:14

Make a square?? Oh, go on, twist my arm. Tell me what you need - I'm too lazy to trawl through this thread to find out.

Be back later - got to go and feed dd with lentils and crisps.

tamum · 25/10/2005 17:15

I'll CAT you if I may, you're a wee star.

sorrel · 25/10/2005 17:40

tamum - will happilly do some squares for you but tell me how many to cast on and how many rows will make 15cm sq/ ( hve plain brown DK an size 6 needles) cat moi.

tamum · 25/10/2005 17:49

Hi sorrel, I can't tell you I'm afraid without knowing the details of your yarn. Have you still got the ball band? It should tell you how many stitches are equivalent to 10 cm, so then do half as much again. I would guess about 25 but it could easily be anythng between 20 and 30 depending on your tension and the exact yarn, sorry!

sorrel · 25/10/2005 18:04

no bother- will give it a go- not sure if i still have the band but will do trial and error method if i cant find it!
is it only cotton though? i think mine is a mix.

Marina · 25/10/2005 18:43

Hello all, checking in briefly.

Miaou, wool now purchased and should be dispatched tomorrow, ditto the other Mner who asked me to get wool, you know who you are! Only got to Johnny Loulou's yesterday due to bad engineering works on local trains at weekend.

MP, no deadline, just asap, please don't worry.

SueW, that's so kind! You bit! Is that a Meena's felted marsupial tote by any chance? You need to send your completed handiwork to me, I will CAT you with my address, Yahoo permitting (still owe at least one person a CAT)

I have received the first squares in this morning's post. Thank you pph, they are lovely.

suedonim · 25/10/2005 20:00

Have replied to your CAT, Tamum.
