to think that ginger hair

is the most beautiful colour and those with it shouldn't be bullied or taken the micky out of but praised instead?

My twelve year old daughter has been bullied at school for the colour of her hair, so much so that she wants to dye it. This is breaking my heart as her hair colour is absolutely gorgeous, a golden red, and she should be proud of it. She's so upset by the bullying and she feels alone and "different".

So, come on all you redheads and Mums of redheaded children - don't you think that red hair is simply stunning? I want to show her that you might get unkind comments as a child by the ignorant people (she's been called a "ginger C" amongst other things) but when you grow up you realise how much good attention ginger hair gets you and how pretty it is.

TimeWasting... Blimey, really? I'm absolutely stupefied that anybody would take such exception to a hair colour, such a benign thing. Confused

I don't know what it's like as I don't have ginger hair so perhaps I don't notice it. I remember a child at secondary school being called a 'carrot top' and I thought it was a really stupid comment as carrot tops are green.

I wonder if the 'teasing' that was such a part of school life way back then has developed into something far more menacing now in some cases? People just seem so much more 'physical' and 'in your face' now. Hmm

My 5 month old DD has red hair and the palest skin with big blue eyes. She is stunning and people are always commenting on her to me.

I was teased for wearing glasses, I actually like wearing glasses.

Marcia Cross (Bree from Desperate Housewives) is one of the most stunning women I have ever seen, her colouring is amazing and I am jealous!

Serenitysutton · 22/07/2011 19:34

I don't think it's beautiful. People go too far the overway fawning over and reassuring red heads. If I were a red head I'd take it with a pinch of salt. Sone red heads are beautiful, some aren't; red hair is no more beautiful than black hair.

joric · 22/07/2011 19:57

Serenity- of course some people are more attractive than others and just as with any other hair colour, body shape, face etc - some people look good, others unfortunately don't look good at all. Red hair is often ridiculed but it can look absolutely stunning (IMO).

joric · 22/07/2011 19:58

Which is what you said in a way of course ....

joric · 22/07/2011 19:58

I have a theory that it's a physical characteristic which we're 'allowed' to bully about. Can't get you for race, sex, sexuality, disability - got to pick on somebody if you're a natural git - ginger hair is still acceptable to pick on. It can be argued to be semi-racist as red hair is very Celtic fringe which has been the impoverished bit of GB. What do you think? On the bright side, apparently Americans go wild for ginger men.

offonajolly · 22/07/2011 20:11

I have ginger hair, had horrible experiences of being bullied at school, a girl in the year above me also had ginger hair and people used to steal her underwear after swimming to laugh at her pubes...its horrible and cruel BUT I would say, dyeing your hair and having ginger roots is worse.

If you have mousey brown hair with blonde highlights its not that noticeable. I would say ignore those around you that are mean, eventually you'll get comfortable with it and not caring about what other kids say is the best line of defence, if you don't care that they tease you they will soon get bored and move on.

edam · 22/07/2011 20:13

I've just been watching the Vincent Van Goch episode of Doctor Who. Karen Gillan is a stunning red-head and obviously the actor who plays Vincent is equally ginger. It was really nice to see two red heads looking great together.

seeker · 22/07/2011 20:18

My dd has the most fabulous red hair (look on my profile if you need proof)

She loves it - having been through an "I wish I was like everyone else" phase when she as in year 6.

And tomorrow she's dying it either green or pillar box red for the summer.

MightyQuim · 22/07/2011 20:18

I have red hair. I got a few comments when I was at school but that's the price you have to pay for having hair that people are jealous of for life.

InfestationofLannisters · 22/07/2011 20:27

Ginger / Titian / Strawberry blonde hair is bloody lovely.

And the complexion and clear eyes which go with it are gorgeous.

My DH's sister has that look about her, being slightly ginger and pale, and if and when we try for another baby I hope he / she takes after her. She has such a classy countenance, she really does. As if she is some sort of higher being.

Not jealous much Envy

motherinferior · 22/07/2011 20:29

I have red hair. And am a vision of gorgeousness Grin

berylmuspratt · 22/07/2011 20:33

I'm married to a lovely ginger bloke. My dream ginge is Damien Lewis , hmmmmm.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 22/07/2011 20:36

All I can say is Ron Weasley now he has grown up. Yes please and thank you very much! Grin

Val, what does your DD think of her hair now that she is older?

DrCoconut · 22/07/2011 20:41

We have lots of red hair in the family and my baby boy's hair is just starting to grow - with a red tinge to it. As it gets longer we will be able to tell if he's going to be properly ginger. But he's gorgeous, nothing wrong with red hair.

InfestationofLannisters · 22/07/2011 20:43

Oh yes, Ron Weasley please. And Damien Lewis.

The other thing about flame-haired girls is how bright colours look so spectacular on them! Blue, green, pink, wow wow wow but when they need to sober it up they still look amazing in black, grey or navy and OMG, brown suits so very well. Nobody else looks as well in that colour.

adamschic · 22/07/2011 20:43

My Dsis has ginger hair, green eyes etc. I'm dark and her DD is blonde and dreaded a ginger haired baby. Guess what she got one who is the most beautiful little thing and her hair colour adds to her beauty.

A few of DN's blonde haired friends have little 'ginners' too. Grin

proudfoot · 22/07/2011 20:52

I have only read the first page so sorry if someone else has already mentioned her, but if you are looking for attractive redheads to show your DD, the winner of Germany's next top model a few years ago was a redhead with the typical "ginger" shade, Barbara Meier. She is absolutely gorgeous and everyone was raving about her hair!

I think it is such a shame that redheads or "gingers" get mocked. I have a friend who was bullied for her hair when she was younger but now loves it and it looks great.

GwenCooper · 22/07/2011 21:00

Two of my boys have ginger hair and I love it. Most people are complimentary, but I have had a few negative comments.

Ds2 who is 6 came home crying the other day and said he wanted to dye his hair brown. Some of the other boys in his class said they hated him because of his ginger hair. Sad. If he said he hated them due to their skin colour or something he would quite rightly have have got into trouble. It's ok to be blatantly nasty about ginger hair apparently.

Actually I am pleased that ds3 is also ginger they can stick together. I think it's probably harder for boys. There are not many famously sexy ginger males out there.

CURLYMAMMA · 22/07/2011 21:01

I love red hair. I think its lovely on children and really comes into its own in adulthood. How fab to be different in a sea of straightened dyed blond/ brown hair. I am envious of how all the red heads I know age so magnificently too and also when red hair goes grey, it tends to go that lovely platinum colour. Win win! You know that even though its shit that idiots might pick on her for her hair colour, at the end of the day, it will be your voice telling her she is lovely that will mean the most.

edam · 22/07/2011 21:05

MI is indeed a vision of loveliness and has mighty fine hair. (Sorry, was I a bit slow coming back to this thread? Grin)

edam · 22/07/2011 21:05

Gwen - I give you Toby Stephenson and Damien Lewis.

TimeWasting · 22/07/2011 21:08

edam, no. Gove me Toby Stephenson!
