to think that ginger hair

is the most beautiful colour and those with it shouldn't be bullied or taken the micky out of but praised instead?

My twelve year old daughter has been bullied at school for the colour of her hair, so much so that she wants to dye it. This is breaking my heart as her hair colour is absolutely gorgeous, a golden red, and she should be proud of it. She's so upset by the bullying and she feels alone and "different".

So, come on all you redheads and Mums of redheaded children - don't you think that red hair is simply stunning? I want to show her that you might get unkind comments as a child by the ignorant people (she's been called a "ginger C" amongst other things) but when you grow up you realise how much good attention ginger hair gets you and how pretty it is.

Forgot to mention the hypersensitivity to heat and cold.... Interesting that you mention pain sensitivity - my DS is the other way and I've heard that they can be very resilient to certain types of pain.

hifi · 25/07/2011 17:22

i love red hair on girls but feel sorry for boys. the red haired men i know dye theirs blonde/brown as they have had such negative comments, one of them hasnt even told his wife hes a red head and dreading having a red headed baby.

motherinferior · 25/07/2011 18:10

Er...not to get too err probing, hifi, but unless he's had some very thorough waxing I suspect she already knows.

Seeker is right. Redheads have Special Mystical Redhairknowledge and Wisdom, which we will share with sufficiently grovelling worshippers.

Solo · 25/07/2011 18:12

Shock hifi, that's a strange thing to successfully hide!

OP, I haven't read the whole thread, so apologies if this has been mentioned before...but get your daughter into Florence and the Machine....Florence Welch is a flame-haired goddess and would be a great role model....and is very cool!

Grin at the thread being started in Nov 2009. Didn't notice that before piling in but well, Wine

Hope DD is okay now Val and er, that it might be useful to someone else.

mathanxiety · 25/07/2011 23:35

My two redheads have asthma, and also tend to thumb their noses at the cold. It can never be too cold for them. Heat otoh is hard for them to deal with.

motherinferior · 26/07/2011 09:50

I errrr slightly suspect we have now moved into the realms of wild generalisation, though.

I am admittedly a somewhat bizarre redhead, being the weirdly pale offspring of an Indian mother and an Anglo-Scandinavian father, but me I hate the cold. Loathe it passionately.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 26/07/2011 10:12

Loads of excellent redheads already mentioned, but here I give you <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=benedict+cumberbatch&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=UxJ&sa=X&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&biw=1222&bih=624&tbm=isch&prmd=ivnsol&tbnid=cIShbZiastb6pM:&imgrefurl=www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/story/sherlock-star-to-take-on-frankenstein-with-boyle-miller_1178030&docid=hL-85v9rO9v96M&w=300&h=450&ei=xYQuToSFL8XrOdOu4H4&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=191&page=1&tbnh=155&tbnw=109&start=0&ndsp=20&ved=1t:429,r:13,s:0&tx=55&ty=40" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">the clincher

seeker · 26/07/2011 10:29

Agree, notherinferior. Anecdote doth not data make.

ThumbsNoseAtSnapewitch · 26/07/2011 10:36

also agree re. generalisations - however there is one thing that may be more general - redheads tend to have looser joints because of weaker/stretchier collagen. Tend to, not all. So they tend to have more joint problems and pain in them.

I hate heat, not keen on cold; and have to stay clear of too much sun. I think my pain tolerance is ok but I am a bit of a bleeder!

I prefer this one to yours, Lady Clarice - but he can be a bit hit and miss, depending on hair and angle. And age, I guess!

seeker · 26/07/2011 11:05

Have a look at the hair on the first couple of pictures on my profile- then imagine how I felt yesterday when she came home with it magenta!

ThumbsNoseAtSnapewitch · 26/07/2011 11:08

mmmmm. magenta, different. She has lovely hair, seeker - presumably the magenta will grow out?

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 26/07/2011 11:29

Thumbs, I had a bit of a crush in the Green Wing days and I'm rather enjoying his, um, work in The Hour, I must admit, but he is VERY hit and miss. Long term, Benedict has my lechery heart.

YouDoTheMath · 26/07/2011 11:41

I'm a brunette, but if I wasn't, I'd be a redhead over a blonde any day.

I used to know a girl who used to colour her mouse-brown hair with henna. The result was absolutely stunning - the most vibrant, beautiful red that looked unbelievably natural (not the sort of red you get with chemical dye). I only wish I could do the same but henna doesn't take to dark hair in the same way (it is, however, the best thing I've ever used for the condition and glows bright red in the sun!)

IvyAndGold · 26/07/2011 11:42

I have a Norwegian friend who is a part-time model, her hair is dark red and curly and right the way down her back to her bum... Oh, the envy! Envy

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 26/07/2011 13:40

Sounds gorgeous, Ivy. Dark red hair is particularly lovely. I'm feeling Envy too!

Solo · 26/07/2011 13:46

My sil is a natural blond, but when my brother first knew her, he told me he'd met a gorgeous redhead! When she went back to blond, I thought she'd dyed it blond as the red suited her so much!

Im a red head and LOVE it.... I used to hate it when I was young as I got teased so much for it... I dont really understand why people do tease people with red hair. Ingrained Celtic Repression??? Grin. It used to be bright orange but is now a dark red and down to my waist. Anyway I feel for your daughter but she is only young for a really short period of time. Since I was about 16 it all changed and people are always telling me how much they love my hair. Hoenstly not a wekk goes by now with at least one person (quite often random stanger) coming up to me to tell me how much they love it. I wouldnt change it for anything now and am very sad that both my wonderful children are blonde! I was desperate for a ginger baby!

The teasing wont last for much longer and I know that isnt a comfort to her now but I love my hair and as far as I can gather so do lots of other people. Im glad I never have to die it. Tell her to be proud to be a redhead (although might not be that easy to convince her!!)

Insomnia11 · 26/07/2011 14:00

I don't know why it's 'unfortunate' for men/boys! I find red hair very attractive in men. Have a lovely ginger DH, though he has turned more sandy/blonde/brown in the last few years. One of my bridesmaids (also a ginge) wrote in the wedding guest book "Roll on the ginger babies!" I was dreaming of ringletted russet haired little girls but we have one with olive skin/hazel hair and eyes and one fair blue eyed blondie, though perhaps slightly strawberry blonde in the right light :)

(And what's wrong with ginger pubes - are darked haired ones so great?)

ThumbsNoseAtSnapewitch · 26/07/2011 14:07

I knew this girl in the UK who had the most gorgeous flaming red hair - completely natural, long, curly and shades from strawberry blonde through to dark red. It was to die for - I wanted hair like hers so badly instead of my sandy stuff! She was beautiful as well. Envy. I don't reckon she got teased much... but who knows, she might have been as a little girl.
