to cringe when I see handbags on kitchen works tops?

Is my pet hate. Handbags get put on the floor all the time - on trains, buses, shops, pubs, in the loo. Then people put them on their kitchen work top, or on the kitchen or dining room table when they come in. Do other people avoid doing that? Or just me?

Don't think I generally put my handbag on the kitchen surfaces.

But then I have a cat, so it's pretty academic really

My germ-phobic nutty, neurotic friend was mortified, "You let your cat jump up onto your worktops?!!!".

Erm... have you ever tried to stop a cat jmoing? Or tried to train one?

arabicabean · 10/11/2009 11:17

I wouldn't dream of putting one of my lovely Bottega Veneta bags on a floor (apart from my own of course!). I'm also quite circumspect about what goes on my worksurface - what's wrong with hygienic practices in the kitchen?

traceybath · 10/11/2009 11:28

Never put handbag on floor!

But I can't bear suitcases on beds when packing - all bed linen has to be changed if DH does that.

Also can not cope with people who put clean towels on loo seat lid when in the bath - it gives me the heebie jeebies.

gagamama · 10/11/2009 11:31

What about when you've just been shopping and you get out all your tins and packets and pop them on the worktop, or worse still, cupboards? All that packaging which has been inside trolleys and your car boot or the bus, and have been stored inside warehouses where there are birds flying about and nesting and then been handled by shelf stackers who might have sneezed!

It's a wonder how we even manage to survive!

KimiTheThreadSlayer · 10/11/2009 11:31

My mum and my sister do this and I wast to scream. I never put my handbag on a counter or table, its just gross

StealthPolarBear · 10/11/2009 11:32

just you me and the OP Kimi so far I think

KimiTheThreadSlayer · 10/11/2009 11:34

I don't put shopping bags on the counter or table either

diddl · 10/11/2009 11:36

I just hang my bag up in hall under coat.

Is that odd?

I never take my bag any further into the house than the hall!

StealthPolarBear · 10/11/2009 11:37

no I don't either, unless, as usual the kitchen's already a mess and needs a good clean!

crokky · 10/11/2009 11:39

I would put my bag on a kitchen worksurface, although usually in my house, I hang it on the banister. I would not put my bag on the floor of a train/loo that sort of thing so my bag is OK generally I think!

I don't have bleach in my house either. It's far more dangerous than whatever it is supposed to be killing. (have 2 toddlers).

happywomble · 10/11/2009 11:39

YANBU - although I never put my bag on the floor anywhere.

I even get wound up when my mum travels here by train and puts her overnight bag on the sofa..I'm afraid I pick it up and put it on the carpet!

I also get wound up by people brushing hair in the kitchen..my mum does this too!

The kitchen is for food and crockery only!!

diddl · 10/11/2009 11:42

Never heard of anyone brushing hair in a kitchen!

ScattyKatty · 10/11/2009 11:45

My handbag is a Radley Poppy that was a gift, it cost £250 so I never put it down anywhere!

Chickenshavenolips · 10/11/2009 11:52

A handbag is the least of my worries. Last night, I had a hen sat on my kitchen work top eating grapes out of the fruit bowl. Naturally, I incinerated the kitchen afterwards.

Ok, that's a lie. I just cleaned it.

loupiots · 10/11/2009 13:22

Mumsnet is an unending source of new information; it really is.

The concept - that putting your bag down on surfaces or floors is potentially hazardous to your health - is new to me.

So, I'm going to have to go with YABU.

And really weird.

fatzak · 10/11/2009 13:33

I think that perhaps we should be all dead in this house as there is always so much crap on the work tops. Dread to think where the DSes book bags have been before they are flung on the worktops

I must be missing the germ gene I would never even think about overnight bags, suitcases on beds etc.

nattiecake · 10/11/2009 14:01

i never put my bag on the floor, it goes on the kitchen worktop or dining table at home, but food doesnt go onto either of those without a chopping board or plate or whatever.

talking of money though, i always hold it in my mouth when my hands are full. disgusts me to think about it, but doesnt cross my mind at the time!!

not dead yet...

nattiecake · 10/11/2009 14:04

put towels on the toilet lid while in the shower too!!

not overly bothered by germs. the only reason my handbag doesnt go on the floor is cause i dont want it to get dirty

TokenFemale · 10/11/2009 14:19

I have a bag carrying servant, so don't have such worries - at home, or out and about

EdgarAllenPoo · 10/11/2009 14:22

erm. YABU

my children touch their food. they are the dirtiest items the food contacts.

Romanarama · 10/11/2009 14:34

I have a handbag hook (in my bag) that you can use to hang your handbag under any bar or restaurant table. Clever eh? I expect you can get them all over the place, but the shoe shop by Kew Gardens tube station has them.

I use it so my handbag doesn't get nicked, the germ thing hadn't occurred to me at all, but I'll see it as a positive externality now.

PeedOffWithNits · 10/11/2009 14:41

i know someone who cooks while her 2 cats jump up and down off the work tops

eeewwwww!

in public loo I have been known to hold my bag in my TEETH if there is no hook on the door for it.

My DDs 7 and 9 know never to put their bag on the floor in a public loo - they are minging!!

oldraver · 10/11/2009 15:42

Romanarama, Ive seen those hooks and was thinking of getting my Mum one as she is a nightmare with 'loosing' her bag, as she just flings it under the table as her mind is concentrated on ordering her food. Then we have the 'where is my bag search'. Ive also had quite a number of friends have bags stolen from under the table. So is it a faff ?

My main reason for not putting my bag down is due to dirt in loos which I think an escepatable excuse reason and the rest of the time due to not wanting to loose it. I dont like bags at the best of time and prefer an over the shoulder I can forget about. I'm not a delicate bag tucked under the arm person

happywomble · 10/11/2009 16:54

nattiecake - please don't put money in your mouth..money is filthy!!

cornsilkwearscorsets · 10/11/2009 16:59

I am expert at holding mine under my chin in public loos.
(psst wondering, wondering - remember when you bought the orange lurex dress from Matches a while back - were they okay about returns?)
