to cringe when I see handbags on kitchen works tops?

Is my pet hate. Handbags get put on the floor all the time - on trains, buses, shops, pubs, in the loo. Then people put them on their kitchen work top, or on the kitchen or dining room table when they come in. Do other people avoid doing that? Or just me?

Wonderingwondering you'd be really ikked out to know that my 2.5yr old DS has a current fascination to licking the floor, yes licking the floor. !!!! We are doing our best to stamp it out but I think he now does it to see us fly into hysterical rage about 'germs'.

I also collected him early from nursery last week where I saw him (in crowded kiddy bathroom) dribble some wee on his hand but couldn't fight his way to sink so licked hand!!!!

Both these have kept me awake at night but feel reasonably calm re bag on worktop in comparison.

SquirrelTrap · 09/11/2009 20:50

YABU

Have you ever known anyone EVER to have died due to "handbag being placed on kitchen worktop"

The body is amazing. It can cope with a bit of handbag.

facebookaddict · 09/11/2009 20:51

and apparently I ate my own poo when I was a baby (god knows how).

All I can say is that between my parents and my kids you probably think I have terrible hygiene which I assure you, I do not!

nikki1978 · 09/11/2009 20:53

I never notice where I put my handbag and I often put it on the worktop. I am not a cleanliness freak and don't care about germs to be honest. Myself and my kids are very rarely ill and I think it helps that we don't sterilise evrything in sight.

Thats just me though

squeaver · 09/11/2009 20:56

I tell you what's a million times worse though:

KEYS!!!

AND PILES OF COINS!!!

ImaburningHEIFERgy · 09/11/2009 20:57

I never ever put my handbag on the kitchen worktops. That is because there isn't any space being its filled up with other crap such as coins and keys

hocuspontas · 09/11/2009 21:01

Agree with Hulababy. If you put food straight onto a worktop/table then you'd wipe it down first.

First time in my life I have even considered handbags a health hazard.

NowtonTelly · 09/11/2009 21:02

Waaaaaay too much time on your hands

wonderingwondering · 09/11/2009 21:04

Squeaver, I agree coins are bad (dirty, germy).

Key-on-table is absolutely BANNED in my house (scratchy marks on wood). Less bothered by key-on-kitchen-work-top.

sausagerolemodel · 09/11/2009 21:05

everyone is too scared of dirt these days. Its good for you. It strengthens your immune response. I'm not suggesting we roll around in poo but a few germs here and there are better than no germs anywhere.

hocuspontas · 09/11/2009 21:05

Unless someone shits in your keyhole what's so bad about keys?

Coins ARE filthy but I still don't give them a second thought.

wonderingwondering · 09/11/2009 21:05

Nowton, I also agree with your comment . I try to fight it, I really do.

OP and all the others who worry about these things : you are WIERD

yama · 09/11/2009 21:34

I throw down my handbag on various floors outside my home but have just realised that I do actually have a liking for dining table and worktop whenever in my own home.

I never realised ...

Lonicera · 09/11/2009 21:38

I never put my bag down on the floor in loos, pubs or restaurants either.

Lonicera · 09/11/2009 21:41

And I can't remember the last time that I travelled by train or bus.

2rebecca · 09/11/2009 21:46

Our kitchen work surfaces get all sorts put on them. Tools, dirty trainers for washing in the sink after running through the forest etc.
If I'm cooking or preparing food I clean the work surfaces first but a work surface is a work surface. Not had food poisoning for years, a bit of dirt is good for your immune system.

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 09/11/2009 21:47

I don't get all this hysteria about having everywhere ultra sterile and bleached - why are you so scared of a tiny bit of dirt? Most adults have got bloody strong immune systems, and unless you live with someone who is severely immuno-compromised, or a premature baby, there's really no reason to be this knee jerk about cleaning, and you probably won't be doing your kids growing immune systems much good.

Chuck your handbags on your work surfaces!
Chuck your kids in the supermarket trolley!
Put down the bleach and gasp in amazement as you don't all immediately fall down dead!

[wonders idly if all the paranoid handbag clutchers also carry orange pomanders]

UndomesticHousewife · 09/11/2009 22:05

My handbag gets kicked about on the floor everywhere, though I don't put it on the floor in public toilets more in case someone nicks it from the next cubicle, though I don't really like the thought of it sitting in someone else's wee.
I put my handbag on my worktop, but I clean my worktops all the time with anti bac spray.
We are never ill in this house so i can't be all that dirty .

What drives me mad though is my MIL comes in adn plonks her huge handbag/suitcase on my worktop while I'm in the middle of cooking. It takes up so much room and I move it into the utility room, then she goes into my paper recycling bin fishes out the magazines she wants and puts them all over my kitchen. Drives me mad.

nearlybeans · 09/11/2009 22:35

No - I have never thought about it, and don't intend to think about it ever again. Same goes for the dog's lead. And vegetables covered in mud.

Someone will be along to say they give the exterior of their bag a precautionary wipe with anti-bac next...

Ronaldinhio · 09/11/2009 22:39

ffs what is it with the obsession with germs...
get a grip please....or a plastic suit and bottle of spray bleach

choosyfloosy · 09/11/2009 22:40

Blimey. I suppose this is why I don't really have a handbag - if I used one regularly, I would undoubtedly have killed everyone I know, like Typhoid Mary or similar.

Honestly OP - did you watch that ancient ad for Milton where it showed the red line of protection covering the entire kitchen including the lettuce leaves, once too often?

bibbitybobbityhat · 09/11/2009 22:42

I have never knowingly put my handbag on my kitchen worktop, kitchen table or dining table.

And both dc have vomiting bug atm - go figure!

The bacteria are going to take over the world eventually, you know, they really are. The antibiotics are no longer working ... we're all doooooooooooooomed!

feedthegoat · 09/11/2009 22:45

I can't believe anyone would antibac their handbag! I think putting your bag on the toilet floor is grim but it really doesn't bother me to put it on the worktop.

EyeballsintheSky · 09/11/2009 22:52

Why am I not surprised that Anna's handbag has its own chair?
