To find putting a DC who could walk, in the shopping trolly with their shoes on, pretty disgusting?

There's loads of parents who put their DC, who wont fit into the seat at the front and who could be walking, into the shopping trolly where the food goes, with their shoes on.

I've seen how much dog shit is on the paths and roads, and I know most food is packaged in cellophane these days, but still...I put that food on my kitchen top when I get it home

I'm sure it's much easier putting the little monkey darlings in the trolly to stop them running riot around in the shop, but it is pretty nasty.

It is dangerous to put children into the trolley part so I wouldnt do it. YANBU.

i think the hygeine thing is over the top.

I don't have a problem with it, if ds is playing up and I could only get a trolly with one seat (which dd needs) then I will put him in.

The food you put in will be packaged so it won't be coming into direct contact with the trolly and if it did surly you would be washing it before you eat it!

Well I sort of agree it's a bit grim but I still do it sometimes for an easy life as I have a 3 yearold and a baby. Only in Asda or Tesco though - I wouldn't dare in Waitrose...

You can worry too much about germs etc, if you thought too hard about all the things you/your food comes into contact with you'd never leave the house.

i always look in the trolley before wheeling it into the shop so i think i would spot dog shit in there before loading it up wiht fruit and veggies!
and if it keeps the kids quiet riding in the trolley then surely there are alot happier parents shopping? nothing worse thatn a screaming child in the supermarket as it is like a megaphone in there! everything is amplified!

I do this. DS is 5, autistic and the size of a seven year old (but more like a 2 year old behaviourly). It is the only way I can get the shopping done if he is with me. He does walk some of the shop but gets overwhelmed and will start running around (with no spacial awareness at high speed) making loud robot or car noises, trying to climb onto the shelves of tins or jars, hiding in displays, etc. We both probably look lazy and I don't care. Rather that than have him knock a shelf full of glass bottles of whisky and vodka off the shelf as he has done before, or run into someone whilst stimming and have them turn agressive.

a few years ago I was in a supermarket and saw a child in the trolley part of the trolley lean over and fall head first out, I agree it probably not common but that has made me think of it as dangerous! (the child obviously fell very hard onto the supermarket type floor).

We got told off the other day for having DS in the main bit of the trolley. The assistant said it was for health and safety reasons. I replied that it was a lot safer all round for him to be in the trolley than walking round the shop.

She then decided it was for hygiene reasons. DH advised her he has been in their warehouse (for work reasons) and seen the state of it and kids in trolleys are the least of their hygiene worries!

We did take him out but it did annoy me.

I don't think its a big deal. You wash your food, you wipe your kitchen sides. I can't think of a single time DS has trodden in dog shit. But he is a bit dreamy and much easier to have him in the trolley than wandering around bumping into people/things/head height metal trolleys. And I am too poor to waste £5 delivery charge by doing it online.

My daughter used to love going in the trolley so i think yabu.
The hygiene thing is a bit ott, the trolleys are left out in all weather, dogs pee up them, people cough and sneeze on them when they are pushing them around, why dont you get some of them huge shopping trolley bags which fit in the trolley so your food doesn't come into contact with it. My mum is a bit of a hygiene freak and this is what she does.

YABU and a bit daft to boot. The trolleys are stored outside, to be rained on, walked on by cats and birds etc. Are they cleaned after someone's milk or meat juices have leaked onto them? I expect not, especially if the customer doesn't tell anyone - you'll get far worse germs from that than from some kid's shoes.

Get a grip and stop putting your shopping straight onto the counters if you're that worried

It is, however, fairly dangerous unless you're paying 100% attention to the children in the trolley - I only do it if there are two adults shopping - one to push the trolley and focus 100% on the children, the other to do the shopping. In fact, I just bypass the whole issue entirely by doing my shopping online

Had never though of the hygeine as a problem because I always spray and wash my counters before putting food on them anyway. I still dont think I would put my child in a trolley. My 5 year old either walks or I shop online (we rotate shops that have free delivery codes If you dont order from them for a month or two they send a code for free delivery!)

I think you're being a bit judgemental, TBH. You can't know what the circumstances are, whether the child has SN, or is knackered, for example. It could genuinely be the only way the parent will get the shopping done.

As far as hygiene is concerned, Id on't think it's a big deal. I would hope that, if there was something obvious on the child's shoe, the parent would scarpe it off first, or have them wipe their feet on the shop's doormat. The only issue, IMO, is that it is dangerous to have a child in the body of the trolley. They're probably safe enough if they stay seated, tho could trap fingers in the mesh, but could tip the trolley over if they stood up or leant against the side.

Mind you, I've seen a child topple an empty trolley over when sitting in the proper seat. It was terrible - they smashed into the floor face-first and the trolley landed on their legs. Fortunately that part of the trolley swings inwards to let the trolleys stack, otherwise I think the toddler would have been badly injured.

What about the millions of germs you're touching on the trolley handle bar?!
When we lived in Germany, they all put the children in thr trollies - it's the done thing! And in France too. If my child had dog poo on it's shoe, I might reconsider

YABU. Kids walking - or in most cases running off - in supermarkets is a hazard.
Most food is packaged. If not, it is customary to wash it, so I don't have an issue with it.

I often put dd in trolley,plus scummy shoes .She has LD and sometimes kicks off/wanders otherwise.Personally don't see theproblem.

If I let my almost 5 year old walk, my 3 year then also wants to walk.

Why don't the supermarkets just have different coloured tags on their trolley handles?

Child free trolley (so no dog muck)
Vegetarian trolley (so no meat juices)
Baby Milk Action trolley (no Nestle products)
Free range trolley (you collect these from the canal)

YANBU from a safety point of view - toddler/child toppling head first onto supermarket floor = certain injury.

Hygiene though - YABU. Those trollies are stored outside - God knows what creatures have a sniff of the spilled meat juices etc in the dead of night

Do people actually notice this stuff? I notice kids in supermarkets for two reasons. One, they are being a PITA and I am thinking "Thank god that isn't my problem" and two they make eye contact and smile, so I smile back.

DS likes to ride on the front of the trolley, he doesn't usually get to though as the little ones have the front bar recessed (probably to stop the riding) and I only ever need the little trolleys cause the Ocado man does all the hard work.

rubyrubyruby my two youngest (9 months and 3 years) go in the seats and my 5 year old walks next to us. If she is very tired then she swaps with my 3 year old (she is very small so fits into the trolley seat easily), if my 3 year old wants to walk I either tell him no or if I am in a good mood (rare in the shops) I let him out as long as he either holds hands or holds onto the trolley.

Although all the posts that see me as being off thinking it's disgusting, seem to be people who don't mind the germs on their worktops lol

It's not just big bits of shit, the shit gets gets trodden all over the paths, there are loads of big greenies people have spat on the pavements, bits of chewing gum, there was a big spew patch on one of the paths I was walking on today...I don't want that anywhere near what I'm eating.

I always put ds in the seat (he just about fits) but dh puts him in the back of the trolley. It isn't dangerous as he knows he must remain seated. I think the hygiene thing is a bit over the top the trolleys are dirty anyway, I would always ensure that any food that had direct contact with the trolley or conveyor belt was washed before it is eaten.

Bleep,that is slightly OCD.We are talking children in trolleys not worktops iirc?

Don't stress,imho,and am nursey type peep in very strict area re cleanliness,occasionally a bit of dirt and so on is Good For Children.
