To find putting a DC who could walk, in the shopping trolly with their shoes on, pretty disgusting?

There's loads of parents who put their DC, who wont fit into the seat at the front and who could be walking, into the shopping trolly where the food goes, with their shoes on.

I've seen how much dog shit is on the paths and roads, and I know most food is packaged in cellophane these days, but still...I put that food on my kitchen top when I get it home

I'm sure it's much easier putting the little monkey darlings in the trolly to stop them running riot around in the shop, but it is pretty nasty.

Well and I thought I was a hygiene freak

I put my DD in the trolley all the time and they only thing I worry about is that she'll stand on the eggs.

Supermarket fruit and veg gets handled and sneezed on by so many people, surely that's more of a problem than a bit of dirt from the street.

chegirl · 09/11/2009 14:50

I know for a fact I am a hygine freak (albeit somewhat selective - there is no accounting for neurosis ) and I have never given this a second thought!

I wouldnt take DS2 shopping unless I could stow him in the trolley. The alternative doesnt bear thinking about

There a few of those trolleys with big seats on the front at our mega Tescos but they are usually taken.

TBH I usually clean the trolley before I let my precious little lamb sit in it. Manky as they always are.

pigletmania · 09/11/2009 14:50

Its U to put a child in the trolly part but not in the seat meant for children. I had to put my 2.8 year old in the seat part so that i could shop in peace without her running around everywhere.

GreenMonkies · 09/11/2009 14:53

YANBU.

It's dangerous as well as unhygienic.

Not long ago we x-rayed/scanned a small child with a badly broken collar bone who had fallen out of the main body of a shopping trolley.

4kidsandlovingit · 09/11/2009 15:00

Rubyrubyruby, I so agree with you. Twins and a two year old that is knackered and doesnt want to walk and cant reach the top of the trolley to hold on are no fun, putting the eldest in the trolley WITH the food is easy and the only way.

Fernie3 you are lucky thay yours were older and able to walk and hold the top of the trolley.

Guess what? I`m the one who always used abandon her trolley in the middle of the aisle aswell. That way neither of my darling twins could reach the shelves but boy did people moan about that aswell!

BaronessBarbaraKingstanding · 09/11/2009 15:06

oooooo, well I never even thought of that OP.

I guess if you do think about it, it is a teeny bit icky, and unsafe.

So, best not to think about it otherwise you'll go MAD!!!!

jasmeeen · 09/11/2009 15:09

YABU. I let my DS2 go in the basket bit of the trolley. DS1 did it until he got too big. Would never get the shopping done otherwise.....He gets out if it gets too full. I've never given it a second thought.

Having worked in a supermarket warehouse in my younger days I can assure that if you are a hygiene freak (which I clearly am not!) then there are a lot worse things for you to be worrying about when doing your supermarket shop.

MarshaBrady · 09/11/2009 15:17

The supermarket I frequent has banned children in the trolley due to hygiene issues.

You need to find one like this op!

Shiner · 09/11/2009 15:30

I'm afraid I am on the side of the putting-children-in-trolleys-along-with-dirty-shoes brigade...

What I don't understand is why dirty things on a worktop is a problem. I mean, you don't assume that the packaging is clean, do you? What about nets of potatoes? Or is that clean dirty? And don't you clean your worktop after you've had all that dirty shopping on it?!

saadia · 09/11/2009 15:35

YANBU - I agree with you OP about the hygiene matter, it bugs me too and I think it's inconsiderate.

fernie3 · 09/11/2009 15:37

macdoodle my daugter is only small enough to fit in the seat because she has been so unwell and has not grown much since she was 3.
my son is not perfect (laughing at the thought of this lol and has development delays and is currently being assessed for other problems. Im not saying its easy taking young children shopping just that it can be dangerous putting them in a trolley. If as people on here have mentioned you have 3 who are not able to walk or if you have a special needs child who cannot walk around the supermarket then I agree you have no choice. If you have three children able to walk I wouldnt do it.

arabicabean · 09/11/2009 15:53

To the OP - you have a point, but I do not put my toddler into a trolley on account of worrying about what is on his shoes. The idea of him sitting on some cold hard plastic surface, with the potential to fall out, just somehow does not appeal.

When I need some things during the week, I just push him around in his pushchair (has straps and very comfortable) and take a basket. At the weekend, either my husband or I go alone, and the stress of a long shop with a toddler is completely avoided.

Oh, on the hygiene front, everything gets wiped before being put away.

paisleyleaf · 09/11/2009 18:24

Surely the most germs would come from the checkout staff touching you shopping to swipe it while also handling money.
I said I though it'd be unsafe to ride in a trolley (I'm thinking of little fingers getting trapped etc really) - but I can understand that if you've got more than 1 child with you, or a runner, weighing up the odds, they could well be safer in the trolley.

nighbynight · 09/11/2009 18:29

YABU.

ChilloHippi · 09/11/2009 18:42

Before I had DS I would certainly have said YANBU, but now that DS is 3 years old, YABU. It's often the only way to do shopping at all, and the only person that has ever said anything to me is my mum, who was horrified.

jacyjwc · 09/11/2009 18:56

I sometimes put my 3 year old in - sitting down with crossed legs, and have the 1 year old in the main seat - if there are no 2 seated trolleys available. My older child is on foot. I can't have 2 out of the trolley or it would take all day to do a quick dash around the shop. This problem could be resolved if there were more 2 seater trolleys available. Often there are only a couple.

I am more concerned about the dirt on the handle of the trolley. I sometimes give it a wipe with a wet wipe and it is always filthy. Mush worse germ wise I think than the base of the trolley.

UndomesticHousewife · 09/11/2009 19:04

Do you think the food is transported in sterile packaging and anyone that touches it wears gloves?
The food probably has as many germs and dirt on it as a shoe.

piscesmoon · 09/11/2009 19:17

I think it disgusting-I have a friend who always complains but it does no good.YANBU.

I find it odd that we have whole threads where people won't let people stand on their carpets in shoes and yet you are supposed to put your food where outdoor shoes have been-however I suppose they are different people.

Feierabend · 09/11/2009 19:24

The thing that I still don't get is... most of your food is in packaging anyway so what's the problem? Or do you lick the wrappers and boxes? And when you drop, say, an apple at home - do you then throw it in the bin because it's been where your feet have been? I don't, I wash it and that's that.

Seriously, no wonder there's been such a rise in allergies, if people worry about a little bit of dirt.

piscesmoon · 09/11/2009 19:26

A lot of my food goes in unwrapped and I don't drop it on the way home!

Eve4Walle · 09/11/2009 19:35

DD was out with a friend and her mother recently and she let them stand in the trolley. They both got hurt when it tipped over.

I don't let mine stand in trollies, DS sits in the seat and DD walks.

Sainsburys apparently have a policy of stopping anyone who has a child in the back of a trolley and asking them to get them out.

ChilloHippi · 09/11/2009 19:38

Sainsburys have never asked me.
I'm more disgusted by dirty tissues left in trollies.

Feierabend · 09/11/2009 19:43

Piscesmoon, where do you shop? I find it's almost impossible to buy anything without some plastic / foil around it.

I'm saving the planet,Feierabend! If I can buy it loose, it goes in loose. Things like peppers I never put in a bag.(obviously things like apples with a lot have to go in a bag.)
