To find putting a DC who could walk, in the shopping trolly with their shoes on, pretty disgusting?

There's loads of parents who put their DC, who wont fit into the seat at the front and who could be walking, into the shopping trolly where the food goes, with their shoes on.

I've seen how much dog shit is on the paths and roads, and I know most food is packaged in cellophane these days, but still...I put that food on my kitchen top when I get it home

I'm sure it's much easier putting the little monkey darlings in the trolly to stop them running riot around in the shop, but it is pretty nasty.

my goodness rubyrubyruby I stand corrected

diddl · 09/11/2009 11:20

Well, I try not to judge in unknown circumstances.

I used reins to keep toddler under control, though.

Slimcognito · 09/11/2009 11:21

I think YABU. I agree it is not ideal for child safety reasons (I make DS sit down and keep his fingers inside) but I do it because I don't really have an alternative - DS is 2 but he is very big for his age and he can't fit into the proper seats on the trolleys. If he is not contained he runs off all the time, pulls things off shelves etc, it is too hard to steer the trolley while holding his hand. I do try to take the buggy instead but can only get a basketful of shopping at a time.

I think the hygiene thing is frankly ridiculous. All food is packaged up these days and fruit and veg you usually put in poly bags - and like another said, there is probably more danger from the leaky bottoms of packaged chickens etc. Bottom of the package, obviously not the chickens. Boak.

Sassybeast · 09/11/2009 11:23

OP how often do you/your kids get tummy bugs ?

billynomatesmum · 09/11/2009 11:23

As a parent who does put their dc in the trolley, IMHO, YAB abit P&U (precious and unreasonable).

PMSL at FimbleHobbs range of trolleys available.

Use those trolley liner bags if trolley hygiene bothers you.

btw, I also let my dc eat food we haven't yet paid for, but we always pay in full at the till. A supermarket trip straight after work (for me, school/nursery for the dc) is a whole lot more pleasant if the dc get a snack and to sit on the loo rolls/ box of nappies in the trolley !

I've never been told off or challenged by anyone.

StealthPolarBear · 09/11/2009 11:24

not to mention milk leaking all over
why I can't stand reusable carrier bags

PfftTheMagicDragon · 09/11/2009 11:24

How clean do you think the trollies are in the first place!? They have been used so many time, by so many people, kept outside with all sorts of crap in them, never cleaned and you happily put your food in them already!

Your hygeine argument is spurious at best.

bruffin · 09/11/2009 11:29

YANBU especially for safety reasons, know of children with concussion from falling from them.

Extremely lazy and bad parenting, can't bear seeing kids in the baskets in trolleys especially when they are wobbling about because they are standing and the parents are taking no notice of them.
Mine always managed to go shopping without riding in the baskets, they either went in the proper seat or walked.

BLEEPyouYOUbleepingBLEEP · 09/11/2009 11:32

I know for sure what it's like to try and shop and keep a LO from pulling the stuff off the shelves, and I've never let anyone knowing I'm being right judgy about them in my mind.

Sassy, none really, I'm normally not freakish about germs and them coming into contact with stuff, but I am surprised at how many aren't bothered or have never thought it's unhygienic.

I really do stand corrected, how I could be so precious is beyond me, I'll have to keep a check on it in future

Where the hell do you all put your shopping if theres a kid in the trolley? Surely to have a trolley one must be doing a "big shop" or its a shopping trip with larger/heavier items to be bought?

I think the hygiene thing is a little daft, but I do agree it is dangerous practice.

My children always walked with me and knew to hold onto the trolley or me - they never, ever ran wild or screamed the place down. They have never been distruptive or disturbed other shoppers.

Shop online if you know your child will be distruptive in a supermarket. Or try teaching manners and good behaviour.

StealthPolarBear · 09/11/2009 11:42

pruneplus, I don't do it as mine are too small (well one's too small and I wouldn't go to the supermarket with both) but surely you do it when you need slightly over a basket amount of stuff - the sort of amount that will fit in a trolley with a child. And try teaching manners and good behaviour - good in theory but doesn't help with a 2yo having a meltdown in the cereal aisle

LongStory · 09/11/2009 11:49

I couldn't do this, I always fill one trolley to the brim, and often have to use a second for my brood. So the toddler would have to be perched rather precariously, squishing all my food! Fortunately I'm able to leave the little ones at home when I shop, although I take my 9yo "Asda buddy" son. He has suspected aspergers, so he's great with lists and locating things, although we have a problem when they re-stack the store!

MavisEnderby · 09/11/2009 11:49

.Am trembling at thought of supermarket trolley when dd too big!It is entertaining enough atm with dd (screeching, lots) but when she gets bigger !!!eek.Had to smile the other day when obviously LD girl about 10 ish came up too our trolley and peered in and yelled "LOTS CHILDREN" really loudly at us then managed to clear aisle with shreiking.I struck up convo with lovely mum.Not all can be taught by "Good behaviour"prune.

borderslass · 09/11/2009 11:50

its bloody dangerous I did it in B&Q when my youngest was a week old son who was just 14 months fell out don't know if his problems are coincidental but the guilt is still there 14 years later.

MavisEnderby · 09/11/2009 11:55

Borders {{{HUG}}}

it is unrelated,it is.From whatyou have said your child is on autistic spectrum. No way is that your fault.

Big unmumsnettly hug.

borderslass · 09/11/2009 11:58

I know but theres lots of other things wrong I suppose its natural to feel guilty.

teatank · 09/11/2009 12:02

you could just take some antibacterial wipes with you to cleanse the trolly of those nasty germs or JUST GET A LIFE!

AitchTwoToTangOh · 09/11/2009 12:05

haven't read entire thread but LOL with two under four i do this AAAAALL the time.

prettyfly1 · 09/11/2009 12:06

I do this. I am eight months preg with a four year old who would run off and cause mayhem and then you would have a thread about "aibu to wish people would control their kids in supermarkets". My mum did this. Get a bloddy life.

BLEEPyouYOUbleepingBLEEP · 09/11/2009 12:07

ouch teatank, you've hurt my feelings now lol

MavisEnderby · 09/11/2009 12:09

Borders,i think it is part of having a sn child, you always have some residual guilt, could I have done this or that,or whatever.I feltand stil feel it so much after dd dx but that way madness lies.If i contemplate it too much it is unbearable so I try to live in the now and today. It still creeps through though. You love your dc and that is the bottom line. All their funny "abnormal" chaacteristics. It is so fucking hard somedays, but that love----whe ndd gives me one ofher smiles full of innocence and love it makes it worthwile but then she can be a pita..it is difficult somedays find it hard to cope, but sweetheart you are NOT to blme.It is just one of those shitey things taht happens randomly.xxxxx

purpleduck · 09/11/2009 12:10

I used to do this all the time - I think the dog shit scenario is a bit pulled from the air. Trollys are more likely to have birdshit on them of be pissed on from the gangs of teens that seem to like hanging out there.

I had never really worried about that before...so glad i read this thread

BLEEPyouYOUbleepingBLEEP · 09/11/2009 12:12

Anything to help purpleduck

OP posts:
IdrisTheDragon · 09/11/2009 12:14

I don't do it. But not sure why. Definitely not a hygiene reason.
