To find putting a DC who could walk, in the shopping trolly with their shoes on, pretty disgusting?

There's loads of parents who put their DC, who wont fit into the seat at the front and who could be walking, into the shopping trolly where the food goes, with their shoes on.

I've seen how much dog shit is on the paths and roads, and I know most food is packaged in cellophane these days, but still...I put that food on my kitchen top when I get it home

I'm sure it's much easier putting the little monkey darlings in the trolly to stop them running riot around in the shop, but it is pretty nasty.

the germs, the germs...they're EVERYWHERE
ARGGHHHHHH

Eve4Walle · 09/11/2009 19:48

I only know that because I worked at Sainsbos and was told during training to stop anyone with a child in their trolley to get them out, though I never had to actually do it.

MrsSantosisbored · 09/11/2009 19:51

YABU - I rarely do it but if a DC "flags" half way round the shop and I need to finish buying um food then yes I would. It is under strict instructions that DC won't stand up at all. I try to shop without my kids but can't always do it and the sort of shops I use don't do delivery (Aldi Lidl & Morrisons) I think this is a bit precious. there are germs everywhere - decent hygiene is one thing.

at Fimble's idea. Mine would be the veggie/Baby Milk Action one then!!

wahwah · 09/11/2009 20:02

Fuckinhell. I has no idea I was being judged for this as well as everything else.

Well good luck to you lot with your docile sprogs and weeny things who fit in trolleys. I have a giant and energetic son who will happily run amok in any supermarket, so I sometimes have to follow through withe the threat of joining his sister in the trolley. I only ever worried about their hygiene tbh.

mummymoodie · 09/11/2009 20:09

I had my ds in the front because my baby was in the other, he was 3 at the time he toppled right over the front flipped right over and landed flat on his back. Thankfully he was fine just a little bit shocked!!! as was I and all the other shoppers circling round me showing their concern etc... Needless to say never again could have been very nasty.

Never really thought bout hygiene before now

Oblomov · 09/11/2009 20:46

LOL. I'm with wahwah. Had no idea I was being judged for this ASWELL.
Fucking funny. Honestly. I give up.
HA HA HA.

KristinaM · 09/11/2009 20:48

really??? I usually wash or peel unwrapped food before i eat it

Oblomov · 09/11/2009 20:49

the person before you, put a bottle of bleach in the trolley. and there is often a bit of residue off these or shampoo or fairy liquid or whatever.and then you put your fruit and veg.
but that doesn't bother you. hygiene of kiddies shoes does.
what a load of tosh.

Divatheshopaholic · 09/11/2009 20:54

well, this afternoon we did speed shopping after school, which means both my dc, 2 and 4 wnet in the trolley.
i wonder why people were giving me nasty looks
wash before you eat, dont put your unwrapped goods in the trolley, you might also discover trolley bag that fit in the trolley in the future
unless, bring out law against it i will put hem in if needed.

pjmama · 09/11/2009 21:51

What a ridiculous thing to worry about imho

MissMoopy · 09/11/2009 22:04

Don't be so ridiculous and pompous. I am sure no one ever died of trolley related food poisoning!

Lapsedrunner · 09/11/2009 22:05

You know what OP, I kind of agree with you. However ds often sits in the big bit of the trolley (not when doing big shop - just when I need a few bits). Its the path of least resistance I guess. He's 2 - he hates shopping, he sees it as a treat to sit in the big bit, and is usually happy, especially if he has a (paid for) snack or something to play with.

I would rather he was in the trolley (reasonably) safe, than running about, getting in peoples way, taking things off shelves etc. In an ideal world, he would walk beside the trolley quite happy to walk around Tesco/wherever but he's a 2 year old wee boy.. I cant imagine those days any time soon, so I do what I need to do get him, me and our shopping out of there as quick as humanly possible. Lazy? Yes quite possibly. Ho hum. I'll live with that.

On a side note, I saw a wee boy 5ish fast asleep in the trolley last week - obviously had a very tiring day at school - very cute.

YABU

I'd be more worried about the AIDS on the handles...

macdoodle · 09/11/2009 22:42
Hmm
Kewcumber · 09/11/2009 23:00

Do you wash your tin cans before you open them? Because if you don't and you're worried about germs, I'd suggest you start now before worrying about unclean feet.

And if you don;t wash your unwrapped fruit and veg then you're more likely to be eating pesticides and wax than dog shit.

I grew up living above the shop - trust me I know.

Another tip - never buy unwrapped cakes from small corner shops

Pisces Moon
"yet you are supposed to put your food where outdoor shoes have been"

You know a lot of fruit and veg grows on or in the ground, don't you? And manure is a normal fertiliser? It's just how food grows - so wash it when you get it and don't worry!

Leeka · 09/11/2009 23:22

And Tethersend - you're joking, right?

Claire2009 · 09/11/2009 23:23

Wtf? My DD is 3.8yo and DS 2.6yo, I get a double trolley when I go shopping because they run round like looney's else, I couldn't imagine getting the shopping done without using a trolley for them/the shopping! I'm afraid I don't even consider the hygiene aspect!

mummygirl · 10/11/2009 09:56

"teach them manners"? "lazy parenting"? You don't know you're born lady.

I'd happily let you go shopping with my 3 under 3, without putting them in the trolley, with noone to leave with at home. By all means, do teach them some manners since that seems to be the problem. I'll be watching from a distance -possibly laughing my head off

mummygirl · 10/11/2009 09:57

Or was this two different posters? Either way, you're all welcome to do my shopping for me...

Leeka- you had to ask???

BritFish · 15/01/2010 01:56

it IS dangerous to put kids in trolleys if they wont sit down. if they stay sitting down, no harm will come to them, hopefully.
if they stand up, they can pull shelves down on to them, trap their fingers bang their heads, and climb over the top and fall out.
i have seen many kids injured from messing around in trolleys from my supermarket years. please please please, to ALL mumsnetters, try whatever you can to get your kids to sit down.
no supermarket worker wants to see your kid get injured, if we ask you to get them out/to sit down, its because we CARE.
because you can't sue us if the child falls out and wasn't in the childseat, and it is horrible when they do fall.
