To find putting a DC who could walk, in the shopping trolly with their shoes on, pretty disgusting?

There's loads of parents who put their DC, who wont fit into the seat at the front and who could be walking, into the shopping trolly where the food goes, with their shoes on.

I've seen how much dog shit is on the paths and roads, and I know most food is packaged in cellophane these days, but still...I put that food on my kitchen top when I get it home

I'm sure it's much easier putting the little monkey darlings in the trolly to stop them running riot around in the shop, but it is pretty nasty.

YANBU

I get my shopping home delivered but always insist that the delivery chapp allow me to hose him down before he brings the things through to the pantry.
I once offered to finish him off with a buffing cloth but apparently this means something quite the opposite of what I thought.
I also used to date a young man who worked in a supermarket type place and he walked in on a female shop assistant pleasuring herself to a moment of equisite abandon with an unwrapped cucumber so I always wash items individually anyway.
And rarely buy salad.

sockmonkey · 09/11/2009 12:16

My DSis told me that she read a study once about children in Trollys. Apparently good looking children tend to be allowed to ride in the trolly for longer than... others.
Not sure how true it is, but my 4 year old goes in the seat at the front.

Don't like them going in the main basket bit, purely because I can't fit all the shopping in.

yabu. worrying about things like this smacks of ocd if you ask me

MavisEnderby · 09/11/2009 12:20

Pagwatch lolol

AitchTwoToTangOh · 09/11/2009 12:21

lol pagwatch. in the salad-growing area of murcia a couple of years ago the farmers were so short of water that they diverted their domestic sewage to the fields... bit of an e coli breakout in wales as a result.

mummygirl · 09/11/2009 12:21

disgusting or not some of us simply don't have a choice fgs!

pagwatch · 09/11/2009 12:24

and at aitch

we have a place in Murcia. If it was around the time we were out there with DS2 we could have laid waste the entire population of Wales. The fumes would get them before the bacteria had a chance.

AitchTwoToTangOh · 09/11/2009 12:25

arf. and ooooooh, a place in murcia... [pagwatch's new bff]

Bumperlicioso · 09/11/2009 12:27

Don't you remember as a kid it being the height of excitement to be able to sit in the trolly?

I would worry it was a bit dangerous but the cleanliness thing wouldn't bother me. Do you think they wash all the crates they store the fruit and veg in?

paisleyleaf · 09/11/2009 12:27

I don't think children should be in the trollies for safety reasons. It never occurred to me that trollies are clean.

pleasechange · 09/11/2009 12:39

The other thing is - even if you could be sure that the trolleys aren't filthy, you don't have any idea about where or how the food was stored/transported before it got on the shelves. By the time you put it in your trolley, who's to say it's clean anyway, so no point worrying about a bit of dirt in the trolley itself. Like others say, the only way to make sure the food is clean is to wash it, and your worktops as well

DS2 (4 but the size of a 6 year old) has autism, and the only way I can shop with him is if I sit him in the trolley. I can't sit him in the seats as he is too big, and I can't sit him in a disabled childs trolley as I also have an 11 month old. I don't do it too often, as I hate doing it myself, but there really is no other way I can do my shopping with him there.

YAB a bit U.

memorylapse · 09/11/2009 12:59

I dont put dd2 in the trolley..but tbh..Id be more worried about how many minging people had actually picked stuff up of the shelves and put it back..after going to the loo for a poo and not washing their hands..

DH saw this first hand once in Tesco..popped into the loo and a man came out of the cubicle and walked straight out had obviously had a poo) and then we watched him walk round the fruit and veg section picking stuff up and squeezing it etc, then putting it back..ewww

Gosh its so easy to be the "perfect judgy parent" when you have perfect little children who walk nicely by your side or at 5 are small enough to fit in the seat

My first was easy, DD2 is a nightmare, and even a quick dash is traumatic, so bugger off if I want to put her (shoes and all) in the back of a trolley for my sanity and everyone elses, and not end up having to pick up half the shop she has flung on the floor, then I bloody well will!!

madmissy · 09/11/2009 13:28

hygeine? jesus the trolleys are filthy as it is!

as for putting dc in the trolley... yabu

i actually found this hilarious and bit extreme

EyeballsintheSky · 09/11/2009 14:09

I'm more concerned about dd's lovely clothes being covered in meat juices actually .

Seriously, I wouldn't worry too much about the hygiene aspect. I do conceed the safety point which is why I force dd into the seats. Once I let her into the shallow trolley in Marks but I held onto her the whole time which limits your steering ability

SKYTVADDICT · 09/11/2009 14:17

Oh dear. I have two los aged 1.3 and 2.5 and some of the supermarkets (our local Sainsburys to name one) don't even have trolleys that they could both sit in the seat side by side so what am I supposed to do about that? My 2.5 year old would be causing chaos if he wasn't in the trolly so yes, as others have said - get a life!

jaquelinehydeTheBonfireToffee · 09/11/2009 14:21

Surely you should be starting a thread about how disgusting it is that a child can't walk down the road without standing in dog shit!

That seems to be the core of your argument, yes, so tackle the cause, and solve your issues problem.

ImSportacus · 09/11/2009 14:25

YABU, there were probably rats or mice crawling all over your stuff in the warehouses anyway. Stuff which got transported to the store on a bogging pallet stacked in a manky lorry.

Why worry about germs off a wean's shoe transferring to a trolley that is stored outside?

DebiTheScot · 09/11/2009 14:32

I don't generally do it but I have done a couple of times. Not easy to take a baby and a toddler to the supermarket and sometimes whatever is the easiest option is better for everyone.

I once saw a toddler tip the whole trolley over when standing in it and leaning to get a magazine. She was ok but got a big fright.

If I was worried about hygiene I'd be more worried about what I might catch off the trolley handles to be honest.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 09/11/2009 14:35

Bloody hell ruby how did you manage that!
