to think that Brazilian waxes are NOT the norm. Or am I deluded?

Article in the Times basically saying that it is an expectation nowadays that women will have Brazillians.

women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/relationships/article6893826.ece

Is this the case nowadays? I have never had a wax job down below and have no intention of. Sod that!

Particularly at this quote: "There is something hugely irritating about being forced to conform to an aesthetic ideal instigated and perpetuated by the porn industry, but...it is now expected. If your boyfriend has been conditioned to expect a tidy Brazilian, he may genuinely find anything else very off-putting".

Really? Or in actually still having pubic hair am I the modern equivalent of the wild woman of Borneo?

HAHA. I dont know what would be seen as the norm. I do what I find comfortable, and also slightly influenced by what my husband likes. I dont care what the norm is!!

A brazilian certainly isn't unusual. quite common i would say but i bet it is different in age groups - slightly.

famishedass · 31/10/2009 16:07

hell will freeze over before I allow someone to pour hot wax over my vagina and rip out all the hair.

llaregguBOO · 31/10/2009 16:07

Well obviously I don't go around discussing the merits (or not) of pubic hair but I don't know anyone with a Brazilian. I'm in my 30s and I suspect women of my generation tinker with the edges but not remove it all. Personally I do nothing down there; I wouldn't do it because a man expressed a preference.

Actually, as I get older I am less inclined to any hair removal. Perhaps by the time I'm 80 I'll be plaiting my pubic hair and combing my armpits in defiance of the porn industry.

mamas12 · 31/10/2009 16:07

I really hope it isn't the 'norm' becasue if it is it's a damning example of the pornification of beauty and so called standards of expectations.
These girls who come accross the boys who are put off by real women are not worth it and should be told they are the inadequate ones.

Mamazonabroomstick · 31/10/2009 16:08

I do think that a brazillian ( or the shaved/immac'd version of) is the more common look nowadays.

I do think that so many women have their fanjo styled in that way that men have come acustomed to it. that does not mean that it is necessarily what they want, just that it is what they expect given the rise of the fashion.

I have a brazillian as i find it eaier that faffing around trying to neaten it all up, i just whip it all off. its also cleaner so i prefer it.
DP begs me to grow "a landing strip"
he prefers women to look like women rather than young girls.
It's women that have created this percieved pressure to wax, not men.

famishedass · 31/10/2009 16:08

yeah, I bet age has everything to do with it - I'm mid 40's and have a very hairy minge - i think it's younger women who wax.

paisleyleaf · 31/10/2009 16:08

I'm with famished

pinkteddy · 31/10/2009 16:09

Most of my friends wax but I don't know anyone who has a brazilian. My friends are mostly in their 30s and 40s. It may be different for younger folk! Certainly I am always surprised by the amount of Mnetters who say they have brazilians or the full monty!

PeedOffWithNits · 31/10/2009 16:11

we need a midwife or smear nurse on here to tell us the truth!

have never discussed on the playground, or toddler group (oddly enough) but if MN is a representative sample them yes they are fairly common, but I agree also age dependant

my DH would have no clue what a brazilian or landing strip was!

BrokkenHarted · 31/10/2009 16:12

Oh does it have to be a wax thing? i dont do that! I get hubby to shave me - turns in to a bit of foreplay if you like (TMI BH!!)

AlaskaNebraska · 31/10/2009 16:12

oh that is just odd

famishedass · 31/10/2009 16:13

and hell will freeze over again before I allow my dh anywhere near my vagina with a razor.

ChunkyMonkeysMum · 31/10/2009 16:13

I am 30 and have never had a brazillian. I trim & tidy the edges every now & again, when I can be bothered but that's about it!!

PeedOffWithNits · 31/10/2009 16:15

i think that brazillians etc will die out when WE start demanding that men get waxed genital areas for hygeine reasons

anyones fella go bare? Thought not!!!!

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 31/10/2009 16:16

I'm in my (late...very late) twenties and one or two of my friends have tried the brazilian or the full monty but nobody keeps it up. Most women I know just tidy it up. Personally I shave underneath and the upper thigh area whilst leaving the 'area' hairier

BrokkenHarted · 31/10/2009 16:16

HAHA is it odd? Really? I dont think anything of it! I was a bit ooh err just be careful with that thing the first time he did it for me but now it is great!

GetOrfMoiLand · 31/10/2009 16:17

Ouch ouch to all of it.

I feel like crying whenever I have had my eyebrows waxed, let alone downstairs.

I LOL at articles about waxing which say 'take a paracetamol an hour before waxing'. Fuck off as if that would help fgs!

I just shave it down to a Phil Mitchell stubble and shave the sides (if we're sharing).

Brokken - after seeing the state of DPs face after he shaves NO WAY is he going anywhere near me

PeedOffWithNits · 31/10/2009 16:17

is a full monty not the same as a brazilian then?

WoTmania · 31/10/2009 16:18

YANBU - I shudder at the mere thought

GetOrfMoiLand · 31/10/2009 16:18

Shave it to stubble with a beard trimmer thingy. Is strangely satisfying.

EccentricaGallumbats · 31/10/2009 16:19

would it be frightly unprofessional to reveal the birthing norm?

salvadory · 31/10/2009 16:20

I have a lot of contact with people who work in GUM clinics and they tell me a hairless fanjo is most definitely the norm, the docs personally find it most bizarre one said the other day, urgh waxing a mucous membrane why would anyone do that? Her male colleague then told me this fashion has drastically cut the incidence of crabs seen so i suppose it has some benefits!!
Can't reach mine to tidy at the minute due to 31 week bump but would be v tempted to shave it all off due to army of grey pubes making themselves known, I'm always reminded of the sex and the city quote made by Samantha when dying her grey pubes, "no-one wants to fuck grandmas pussy"

Mamazonabroomstick · 31/10/2009 16:20

not at all electrica - only if you named Mrs Wilkins as having the hairiest fannyu you've ever seen or whatever

PeedOffWithNits · 31/10/2009 16:20

EG - are you a midwife then? its not like you will be naming names.....
